    4870X2 + EK Block and MEMIO readings

    I'm guessing from my readings that I may well have to take the card apart again. Maybe check the thermal pads, see if one of them still has that protective coating still on? What is the MEMIO? anyone?

    looks a bit high. DD block for comparision.

    idle

    Loaded temps:

    WHy are you only drawing 23A while me and everyone else is drawing 23.7A? Wait why is your core 1 drawing 24.4A? What is your PSU? your card doesnt look stable my friend.

    14.9A on idle? instead of 9.5A

    Im so lost on your post.

    I put a green highlight around the issue. One MEMIO is reading 17c higher than the other. Will have to check what that reads at load.

    Just reading up a bit, and from what I gather the MEMIO is part of the GPU Core. I guess I may have to take the card apart again just to check how well it's making contact.

    I'm not savvy on this stuff, but I'm also guessing that it may be possible that it's the GPU itself at issue, rather than the cooling. I'm going to try and dig out my aircooling readings to make a comparison.

    im guessing that too because your voltages are all over the place.

    im not quick guessing its the block yet.

    Ha ha, I'm getting lost myself now.

    When it comes to current etc, I'm a bit clueless. Note when my gpu is set to 750/900 that's still an idle reading. I'm using Rivatuner 2.11 to set it.

    Will check my load readings.

    Edit: Thanks for the feedback by the way, much appreciated.

    I think the voltages/current are okay. This was more likely an issue with profiles.

    My profile for some reason wanted 1250 on voltage throughout i.e.

    <Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want_0" value="50700" />
    <Property name="Want_1" value="75000" />
    </Feature>
    <Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want_0" value="50000" />
    <Property name="Want_1" value="90000" />
    </Feature>
    <Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_0">
    <Property name="Want_0" value="1250" />
    <Property name="Want_1" value="1250" />
    I set that WANT_0 value to 1050 and my VDDC current now read 9.5A at idle.

    okey now take an temp reading and compare to mine since the other values of ours share simularities.

    Right first off idle.

    This is full load while running call of juarez benchmark. I had to use rivatuner to bump it to 750/900 as overdrive wasn't kicking in.

    I think the EK block is fine, but I'm not overly happy right now. Something ain't right in my opinion. Unfortunately I've deleted my gpu-z aircooled grabs.

    I'd say you need to remount that block as something is up! (my guess though!)

    Here are mine with the EK block

    with EK @idle

    with EK@ load

    Not sure it helps but.....

    Hope a remount will fix it! I already returned one card it was artifacting in 2D I hadn't even overclocked it!

    Thanks emuexport. Will remount tonight. I hope so too. I'm looking forward to getting this build out the way, and moving on to mine.

    I recently added my 4870X2 to my loop and looks like i got the same "problem" like you, my MEMIO from one card is getting very hot (~80°C) under heavy load..
    Have you finally found out how to fix this? I think my block makes good contact to everyhing on the card and i donīt want to mount it to hard since i already broke a memory chip on an old 1900xtx after iīve tighten the block to hard.
    Was is just a bad contact or something else?

    MEMIO on mine is also VERY hot... 96c+ on stock air with a 50cfm 80mm throwing air at the intake fan as well.

    I wonder if this is related to the "good" cards and "bad" cards (referring to test 2 and 3 in 3dmark2003)?

    I did make a up on my first installation. The thermal pads have adhesive tape on both sides, which has to be removed(I'm right on that?). When I took the card apart I noticed that I'd accidentally left the tape on one of my pads. I can't be certain as I'm on a new card now (The 1st was for friend's build), but this may have had an impact on those temps.

    You're right to not over tighten it.

    memio on my card is fine. However it plays up on those tests (It didn't use to). Only way around it on my card is gradual FSB increases while in windows.

    MemIO is the integrated memory controller of the GPU to the GDDR5 chips... shouldnt have anything to do with FSB.

    Sorry I don't understand you, maybe crossed wires. You said you wondered if it's memio not it is memio related

    I said that for the 3dmark03 tests, the only way to get around the bug for me is to up my fsb gradually i.e. if I start at 5.2ghz I get the low score bug. If I start at 4.5 ghz I don't get the bug(most of the time). If I then up the fsb gradually with tweak it in windows so that I'm back up to 5.2ghz i can do a run without the low score bug.

    You're obviously familiar with the thread on this forum, you'll see someone else had similar findings.

    actually I said "I wonder if this is..." which would refer to the subject of this thread (hot memio).

    maybe you should use thermal pastes? to help better heat distribution?

    I don't have this problem now.

    I have pads on the various components, ceramique on the ram and mx-2 on the gpus. Temps are great on my current card and block. Even with the extra voltage pumped through the card the temps hold very well.
