It's been a busy couple of days on the GPU computing research front for me, sapping a lot of my spare GPU cycles.

yesterday, I helped a colleague with a GPU brute force MD5 password cracker....getting 1.2 billion checks per second, which totaly soaked up my 280s.

Then, I was working on a proprietary magnetic reconstruction algorithm on the GPUs that sped up the calculation over 200x from the CPU version.

Hopefully I can get back to putting the GPUs to good use (points!) today

What Angra wrote he done today wasn't nothing compared how much I've spent work-hours to just extracting mucus from my nose... (j/k)

@Angra: What's the estimate your 280s can output in PPD at maximum? Just curious really

Yes, I am not sure what the practical applications are, but some of my coworkers are interested in infosec and greyhat type activities, and seem to find high throughput brute force crackers interesting. At 1.2GH/s, you can cover the entire ASCII space for 8 character passwords in about 70 days.

    asci is only 255 chars ( 255 ) ^ 8 = 1,1865504027970838771731346061683e+616 options?

    there's only ~95 realistically useable characters for passwords, though. (95^8 items)/(1.2e+9 items/second) = about 70 days.

Yeah extended chars are to be excluded

You're our mad scientist for a reason

Edit: though I wonder how long it will take me on my cpu, that 1.2e+9 items a second seems rather slowish??

yes, but you know how the IT guys want you to use some special characters....

boy i can remember when most passwords were just 3 characters... god

now where is that funny story i found about passwords ?? anyone remember it,

it started out with 3 characters
then went to mininum om 5
    then no names
and it kept going on for like a half of a page...

and the last one was so difficult to type and remeber, everyone in the office just wrote it down on a stickey pad and taped it to the monitor
Its not overkill if it works.

wfo, what are you running for the gx2 on, what mobo?? i just got mine in yesterday with the new psu and everytihing is up and running on smp, i just can not figure out whats going on with cuda for some reason it kepps saying that is missing *.dll
I've got dual- 9800 GX2s on 3 rigs. 2 are on a Maximus Rampage, 2 on a P5Q Pro and the most recent edition was my old ICFX3200T2R/G that was sitting in the closet.

I' running Vista 64, Server 2008 and XP X64. No issues or error messages on any of them. I'm using the official Cuda 178.08s. With earlier GPU2s they would install .dlls in the wrong folder. Are you using the latest version 6.20r1?
Those errors were usually "missing cudart .dll" or similar and could be resolved by copying the correct .dll from the F@H program Files/ Program Files (x86) folder to the correct gpu2 Application Data or Roaming folder.

Skycrane, you are dangerously close to a "slacking penalty". Better get the rig sorted quickly.

Mike: Thanks for calling my Boss today & telling him I had to leave immediately due to a family emergency. When I got home I did find one of the Stoli's bottle near empty. I switched over to Absolute

Angra, You are hereby issued a PhD from dak Institute of Crackology

sc00p, now you are aware that tricking dak is a penalty, so watch it...

Who had the snots? I don't remeber...Time for dak to load up some Absolute,.

Another SMP client just added for Foxtrot. It's 17:00 somewhere so it must be 0:beer:30 now.

Overclockers Club is going down in the next 24hrs. Hopefully that will give Coo-coo time to prepare the battle report. And btw, TOP 30 when we do guys!!!

Sorry coo-coo, after the last update we overtake in 9.4 hours. Write quickly!

here's my fahmon... it has logs from mike, coo-coo, riptide, xilikon ect so it looks like I got some more clients!!!

Actually I can debug people's errors with logs this way.

Edit: yeah I got someone else dumping points on me in trade for a cpu to wcg, idk what happend the last 2 monts though as my output has dropped allot ( had about 150K a month on the nicer gpu2 wu's now I was dropping below 100K )

It wasn't successful evening on my place yesterday
First I was going to just swap few rams on my pc. Result was that I damaged my gfxcard, small cap went off, oops (it was 8800GTS so nothing special though).
OK... went to shopping and bought 9800GTX+. Yeah anyone who knows my design of a pc-cube knows that swapping a gpu card takes about 2 hours. Yeah

Spent some more time doing preparations for this surgery... only to find out bracket meant for G80 of course do not fit on G92 (Swiftech MCW60 block)...

    ...so happens.

And I can't find right now the proper flange for G92+ anywhere, figures...

I would have a folding box with a 8800GT too with mysterious black out... waits for troubleshooting also

Few beers didn't help anything... dak: should I move to proper liquids ?

    Now 8800GT, 8800GTS, 9800GTX+ (and q6600) produces zilch...

Hopefully that is all that went. My experience is the PSU likes to take something with it.

It just started rebooting the rig, I could get it to run 2 gpus but when I started the SMP it would reboot. I notice a smell coming from it today, it was an old 400w and not big enough anyway. I shut it down before something does burn up...
