n00b TEC but willing to test it out.

So I have read up a fair amount on this & see the good & bad points of it. I'd like to try it out I think. I see the MCW6500-775T is quite a nice clean setup. Are there any flaws with the Swiftech or is it pretty straight forward? Might as well save a couple dollars on my CPU block now by just going with the Swiftech now what? What size pelt should I use or does it come with the block? What size PSU do you recommend? Was thinking about going with a 226W Pelt. Least I can build around this once I get started now that I am doing a fresh build is the way I see it.

It wont be able to handle that CPU, especially when oveclocked.

You did read the review I take it?

    I think not.

The OP plans to use this with a E3100 45nm Xeon which is based on the E8400 and has a thermal design power of 65w. The reviewer was using an opteron 170 with a TDP of 110w. Understandably it didn't work too well. BUT he did say it would work with lower TDP CPU's.

It comes with a 226w TEC.

    Best bet is meanwell S320-12.
How ever convenient it might appear to you to use power from your PC PSU don't do it.
Use a relay to turn on the meanwell with the PC.
Use a high temp shutdown on the CPU temp in case the TEC fails. You can do this using Realtemp. If the TEC fails your CPU will die a quick death.

Read the review that JOSIFEK points to, he mentions the hassle of insulating, connecting etc. But I think it is pretty straight forward. Look in "Dry Ice an Liquid nitrogen" section for good insulation ideas - especially using kneadable erasers !

Don't expect big OC out of this and if you upgrade later to 4-core you might be asking for trouble.

You have potentially only 70-100w to play with for OC.
Wattage output of an OC'd CPU rises dramatically.

Awesome thx all for the help! I actually as it seems will be upgrading before I get this setup to a Q9550. Will I need to change anything because I'm going quad? Pelt size?

In that case I would not worry too much about a swiftech MCW6500-775T. With a TDP of 95w - itwill run but you can forget any worthwhile overclock.

The unit is restricted to using 50mm x 50mm TEC's,and generally more powerful TECs are 62mm sq. There some powerful 50s about but you will have to have a different power supply not only that they maybe of a different thickness which may cause problems with fitting in the swiftech unit.
The swiftech unit was designed as an easy to use, end product and was not intended for adaptation so it is no wonder it is not too easy. At the time it came into being it was sufficent for the CPUs of that day...things have moved on a bit since then. As time goes on it is less and less useful.

I have that swiftech block and so does my friend, I have gotten my E8500 to 4.9ghz on the TEC using kneaded eraser for motherboard insulation. with a 4.8ghz o.c. I midle at -7c and load at 22c, my friend uses a Q660 and has gotten over 4.1ghz on his TEC at the same temps, you may not be able to get a 4.8ghz oc on a quad but you'll get a decent oc better than water or air will get you. I use the meanwell that swiftech reccomends and the standard 226w TEC that comes with the block and a relay switch to turn the TEC on, thats from swiftech as well. some say that it wont handle a nice oc but with proper insulation it will for sure. if you do not want to use kneaded eraser you will also need dielectric grease for the cpu socket and conformal coating (clear nailpolish works to) for around the cpu socket. but kneaded eraser you just put around the socket and cover the cpu up so just the very top contact point is showing, and I have been running it for 2 wekks 24/7 at 4.6ghz no problem, and NO condensation issues.

I won't be looking for Huge OC value so much though. I want basically an edge over just water cooling it to get abit more from the OC is all. I've seen some crazy OC's on this chip just with air so if I can get a fair bit better than that with the Swiftech TEC then that's all I want from it.

Perfect! I'll be adding this to my list of to buys then. Oh also would it matter if I used a reg PSU dedicated just to this or should I use a meanwell anyways? Reason I ask is so I know which back to order for my MM case when I do. Thx again for all your help guys.

Perfect on my order list then. Now it looks like I'll have to order the 6500 right from Swiftech itself.
