Shanghai launch pulled forward to Mid-October, Model Numbers and info!

Ok, I understand now what the point was. But I don't get though is what those links are supposed to show. The first, the $775 chip is listed "AMD Opteron 2380 Quad-Core Socket F (1207-Pin) 2.5GHz 1000MHz 2MB 2-Way ". If one was for the 45nm wouldn't it list the 6MB cache? Both also say "Barcelona" and neither says Shanghai.

Did I miss where the Shanghai pricing was mentioned earlier (provantage)?

Mattias it's the L2 cache,2MB=4x512KB... They don't list the L3 cache at all,even for "older" Barcelona K10s,which i don't understand at all.

880G will probably use the 4550/4350 GPU core, just like 780G used the 3450 core.

The other hypothesis was 880G = 780G + higher clocks, but actually the increase in die size for 80SP is very small.

40SP is too puny IMHO, even Fusion would have to start at 80.

if you compare RV670 and RV770 that was build on the same tech, and if you compare size in one hand and Shader Processors number on the other, you can guess how much SP's can AMD stuff it the next gen IGP build on 40nm, if now with 55nm they have 40!

launch date is soon and OEM is only few days after so i think they are already in supply now, production was october anyhow.

if you mean before the x58, no it will be few days later. if you mean 2p nehalem, that launch is only for march-april 09 for OEM, so that's still a long time.

So i have no idea why the hell intel is launching desktop first... they should work the other way around 4p - 2p that's where the money is and where amd is still alive and kicking for sure now with shanghai launch.

Read an article a couple of months ago where one of Intel's Nehalem jocks was being questioned on when the chip was going to see the light of day. His tone got pretty shrill and basically said 'when it's ready'. This kind of leads one to think that maybe Intel is having some problems getting the Nehalem IMC working correctly.....at least 2P and up. Why else would the desktops be introduced way before server versions?..............Dunno.

i doubt intel has a problem. with all the money and resources they have they should have a flawless launch. especially since its been years since the launch of the core 2 cpus and amd released theirs quads a year later and already are coming out with new cpus. yes its not a whole new core design like intel is doing but deneb is a lot different than current agenas. but intel is trying to conquer a lot of things at once that amd did over time. (triple channel ddr3, imc, native quad, etc.)

Yeah........just mulling over duploxxx's post regarding the launch of desktop first. Like he said, it should be the other way around..........money chips (server) first, then desktop.............Dunno. But one the other hand.....don't care.....I won't be spending $1,500 on ANY cpu!

doesn't necessarily mean that they will be coming out that late. some places get it later from others. i am still being told that shanghai is coming out in October even tho November is only one week away. maybe not necessarily to consumers but i am being told that they are coming out by the end of this month.

Although most of the event was about potentially new CPU thermal designs, AMD also shared a bit more information about its upcoming Opteron products.

The new Shanghai core is set to launch within weeks from now, so it might not be this month as many have believed. The new processors will be drop-in compatible with current motherboards which will make them a relatively affordable upgrade.

With the Shanghai core, AMD has added support for DDR2 800MHz memory, a 6MB L3 cache, support for Hyper Transport 3.0, improved virtualization technology, and let's not forget the shrink for 65nm to 45nm, which should make these processors less power hungry.

As you might have gathered by now, some of the features won't be supported by older chipsets, such as HT 3.0, and the bad news in this case is that you'll have to wait until sometime near the middle of next year before AMD will have a supporting chipset ready.

When AMD launches the Fiorina platform, these new processors should get a further speed bump with the help of the SR5960 and SP5100 chipsets from AMD, and the company will also release a six-core Opteron which is codenamed Istanbul later in 2009.

In 2010 AMD will be shifting its Opteron platform to socket G34 on the Maranello platform; and the company is also planning on launching its Magny-Cours generation of processors in the middle of 2010, with the Sao Paulo being the first CPU on the list.

nice news, got a link? and isn't g34 that rectangle type of socket? they might make a similar socket shape for swift for desktops. ill ask again to see when the cpus are coming out but i was pretty sure shanghai was coming out this month. they have been mass producing for months so idk y amd would feel the need to delay them but who knows what they are up to.
