Aye great thread, I couldn't find a way to hook up thin wires to the 1k Ohm VR without soldering until I came by this and saw that you used audio cables, and I was like wait that would be easy to hook up to the VR and now I can get 817/2110/1060 on 8800GT!

bit of a thread necro ^
    good thread though
i've never done a volt-mod but if i do i'd do it like this (a quick demo on a old AGP card) -

    pic 1
curl the head of a pin around a rubber band and a piece of string so they're in a little 'eye'
get the pin in the right place with string - i put a single twist in the string to pull it more vertical in this example mod, that should also help keep the pin in the same position on the string
then tension it on the other side with a rubber band

    pic 2
push the pin into the solder contact point and it'll make a tiny hole (solder's pretty soft) that will keep it firmly in position

    pic 3
then get one of these little electric connectors - i can't really remember where i got this thing from, and have no idea what it's called, but it has a place to solder a wire under the head, and a spring-loaded hook-tip that you can push out and hook onto thin wires (legs of components, that kindof stuff). you could probably find them at many decent electronic part shops
*of course this connector is completely optional, soldering or heat-shrinking a piece of wire to the pin would be fine, i just had it lying around and it's kindof perfect*

    pic 4
and use that as your contact

edit: i just yanked this thing around a bit, it's strong! much stronger than i thought it'd be

instead of using tape to cover the surrounding components, could you use something like PCB laquer that insulates everything?

yes...anything that isolates the point you need from surrounding ones will do...eg nailvarnish etc
