Thermalright HR-03GT and HR-11 install 8800GTS (G92)

Hello All,

I wanted to document the install of my new HR-03GT and HR-11 heatsinks from Thermalright.

They are getting installed on a EVGA (G92) 8800GTS in my U2-UFO Case. Overall the install went very well and I am very pleased with the results. So on to the pictures.



Above is a look at what I started with. I Went with the ArcticCool PWM fans because I wanted to have the fan speed controlled by RivaTuner.



Here you can see the naked card and the Thermalright Heatsinks for the RAM and other chips.



Here you can see the thermal paste I used to replace the thermal pads that came with the card. The issue I had with this, that even with the washed added to the spring screws, the stock heatsink didn't make contact with all of the memory chips. I had to file down the screw posts to get it to fit flush. As you can see, it did work pretty good and I had pretty good contact all the way around. It was a PITA.



Above you can see the heatsinks for the memory and PWM chips. The thermal tape that came with the sinks was pretty good. I only had to replace the tape on one sink because I dropped it on the table face down. It is a good idea to get some extra thermal tape just in case.

Here you can see the install of the HR-11. This was a very simple install, just peel off the cover for the thermal pad and tighten bolts. I read on a couple of other threads (other forums) to make sure you don't over tighten, what does that mean? Well, I had a slight bow to the backside plate when I called it good. I wasn't worried about it contacting the circuits on the back of the card. Unless you drop you computer when it is running, it isn't going to short anything out. (if you drop your computer when it is running, I would say that you'll have other issues.

Here it is with the fan installed. I used some double sided tape to keep the fan on, The clips wouldn't work with this type of fan. I had to take the plug off of the stock heatsink and splice it onto the Arctic Cooling fan to get the PWM to work off of the video card. Like I mentioned before. I wanted Riva to control the fan speed.





Now because I eventually want to fit the new SoundBlaster Titanium ZOMG FTW F@tAl1Ty Extreme Gamers sound card in the PCIe 1x slot right below the video card I needed to make the rear cover a single slot.
The idea is to eventually bend downward the cooling fins of the HR-03 to make room for the sound card. (We'll see if I get the courage to try and bend the 6 heat pipes.)

Here is a picture of the card installed. As you can see, right above it is the HR-05 IFX/SLI installed on my north bridge.

Here is a pic showing how tight of a fit it is for the HR-11. It is literally about a mm from the fan guard on the back fan.

Computer actually starts!!

All Done....



I am going to do some O/Cing. I was able to get to 800MHz on the core before I installed this monster. I will post some results. Right now as I type this, my idle temps are 44 deg C. that is 10 deg C lower than before this install!!

I am hoping for some great results!

Really nice review. You've got some skills in photography Maybe you checked difference between using HR-03 + HR-11 and only HR-03? Card is big with this cooling :P 120 mm wouldn't be better instead 92 mm? What CPU heatsink do you use? I have similar heatsink, but there are a few differences:

Thanks for the comments. I didn't check the difference with and without the HR-11. There is a great review of the HR-11 at http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...er-review.html

The one downside to the cooler is how large it is. I think, if I put a standard 25mm fan on it I could still get another 8800 for SLi.
As I mentioned, I do want to get a sound board, so I might actually try and bend the cooling fins downward and out to make room for the sound card and more room for SLi.

A 120mm fan would be better, but I didn't want to have to try and figure out a way to mount it.

I justed used a tripod and a remote shutter release.

I saw you CPU heatsink, and besides the few differences, it looks exactly the same. I have the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer.

If I'm not mistaken, I think it is possible for you to fit one more piece of thermal right on to that board.

There should be enough room for this one little section. Try to guess it and it is an unlikely part.

With an overclock of 805MHz on the Core I am looking at load temps in the mid 50s, I have seen as high at 57 deg with an O/C of 817MHz, but it wasn't stable.

I am using a Canon 30D for the pics, a tripod and a remote shutter release.

you got it, I think a HR-09 type S should fit your card fine on the vregs with pushpins

You should really use OCCT gpu test on high resolution full screen mode (has to be full screen to really raise temps) to check your GPU load temp.
I doubt you will be under 60c load as you are saying... With that kind of cooling, more like 70c....

On my 8800ultra I see 78c on load (30mim OCCT), but that is the g80 heat monster... On your GTS, if you did everything ok, you should see 70c max I believe...

Protected the card with some plastic and tape, leave only the IHS exposed.
Place the sandpaper on a piece of glass, put some tape on it so it won't move when you use it.
Sand it with circular moviments.

Did you notice much difference in temps?

You can gain about 1C - 4C by lapping CPU and HSF, and about 1C - 6C for lapping GPU + HSF on a G80... G80 is hotter then a 65nm Quad...

That is a pretty neat little test.

After 400 Seconds about 6.6 minutes I reached 67 degrees. I was running at my monitor native resolution. 1680X1050

67C OCCT full screen load for the g92 with your HSF and your clocks is good.
The g92 is not only cooler, but it has the core exposed, so it has direct contact with your HSF. The g80 has a stupid IHS on the core, and that is bad since there is no direct contact with the HSF.

Any way, 67c is good, just where it should be for your HSF / aircooling.
