24" LCD need to buy and I have no clue which one, never owned one.

So, my 22" CRT is screwing up and I think it may die soon, after all, it's 8 years old.

I'm looking to buy a 24", because the 26" will be too big, so far I've looked at a few models but I'm not exactly sure which one will be the one that will best all around, not just for "gaming", I'm talking ALL around best.

And here are my choices:

I'm leaning more towards the LG, mainly because it has a good CD/m2 (whatever that means), the f-Engine and excellent warranty, a key point which I always look for.

2nd best I see, it's the ASUS but that sucker consumes 130W, which it's not my cup of tea. Or I wonder if the stupid camera included consumes some of that power too.

2nd best (two 2nd best), it's the Samsung TOC, mainly because I've seen the TVs TOC and they're looking sharp along with a 55W of power consumption.

I bought a couple of ACER 17" a couple of years back for my wife, and they're okay but the movies look horrible, colors were horrible......so I stayed away from LCDs in general.

Samsung has a good rep for LCDs

ASUS seem good, I've always trusted ASUS products.

LG is pretty good from what I've found out about it.

But when it comes to LCD monitors, I'm lost. This will be my 1st one ever, so I hope the experts will help.

The best 24" I've seen that doesn't break the bank is the one I'm using, BenQ G2400W.

Depends how much you want to spend, though. 6-bit TN panel (cheaper) or 8-bit (expensiver). Is that a word? :P

If he doesn't make a living doing editing or relying on color critical work than your statement is really not true. That is the best monitor if you need a monitor for color critical work. If he wants to game and fool around with PS and read forums than you are giving him bad advice as he doesn't need to spend that much money on a monitor.

Right now it is being used as a photo display for a trade show. I fiddled around with it for about an hour, but didn't get a chance to play any games on it.

First off it is a TN panel, so I'll start with the known drawbacks on it.

Colors: The dithering method seems to be implemented well. I didn't notice any banding or funky off shades.

Response Time & Input Lag: It is listed as having a 3ms GTG response time, and it seems pretty spot on. Input lag, if anything, is considerably less than one frame. I didn't see any ghosting, and I didn't notice any "twinkling" during video playback.

It seems like a good monitor for the money, and I don't particular like TN panels. The only defect mine came with is one dead pixel.

i saw that one at harvey normals (i mean harvey normans local rip off merchants/chain store)
on the weekend, but i didnt really play with it. i was looking at the 22"ers. the samsungs and lg's looked the brightest (as usual) next to the hp's which were comparitively dull....all were set to 50% contrast and 50% brightness. using nv cards.

didnt really like the rose and blue surrounds - i prefer black...but thats just me.

acers build quality is a bit of a concern to me, but maybe thats unfounded?

samsungs look really nice, picture quality and build quality is good but their lag times are off the charts, some of the worst in the LCD monitor industry.

I thought that a lot of guys praised the SAMSUNG LCDs around here.

I've heard the Samsung 24" LCD's are quite good, but so are Dell's ... I've been using an old Dell 2405 24" for the guts of 3 years now and its not missed a beat, still looks as sharp as the day I bought it, hardly any back light bleed compared to the smaller cheaper Dell's ... I understand the newer 24" models have faster response times, but its never been an issue for me, am considering a Dell 30" LCD now.

Dont be put off by the Dell badge, I'd never buy a Dell computer, but these LCD's are the bee's knee's and offer a fantastic warranty ... at least the deal I got did ... on site collection and replacement and all. Not sure who actually makes the screens? probably the same people that make Samsung ones?

One last thing ... you mention a 26" will be too big, unless you have very little desk space, then trust me my friend, you grow into larger screens very quickly ... it was the same with my 50"" TV, it was enormous and a fair novelty when I first got it, but now I'm looking for more TV real estate, same here with my 24" LCD and secondary 19" LCD for the computer.

I just bought a Dell 248fpw. and while the viewing angle sucks badly, it has VERY low delay and looks great from straight on.

the expensive dells use H-IPS panels and have bad delay compared to CRT, i dont suggest any of them for online competetive gaming

ive been thinking about either an lcd upgrade or..an addition(another 24" dell) but idk just yet..

I'd like a Dell LCD mon but I noticed on the link posted above, SAMSUNG guarantees ZERO dead pixels on the T240, despite the fact that seems like every LCD monitor isn't really "that" good. I also like that the T240 uses only 55W and it seems like it is the LCD that uses the least amount of power, nice.

I used to have a 52" LCD rear projection TV, I sold that sucker, it was too big, I couldn't stand seeing huge, so I bought me a Toshiba 42" LCD 1080P TV, $999.99. I'm sure 24" will be more than enough now, since that I'll be sitting about 28" away from it.


I don't do any gaming on-line, the only game I personally play is NFS-MW, that's it, then my 4 year son plays Unreal Tournament 2004 and 3.
Overall, seems like the Samsung T240 will do, I'll stop by Best Buy tomorrow and buy it.

For average use, you don't notice the lag, honestly you don't, but if you are an uber gamer then I guess it might be an issue.

I read up about this a while ago, someone mentioned we should try panning our head from extreme left to right really quickly looking at real life scenery, for most people there is more lag than the slowest LCD monitors when you stare at them straight on all the time ... try it and see.

But yeah, if you are a competitive Gamer (and that must be an exclusive club) then you are looking for every edge of advantage possible ... but that's hardly average LCD monitor advice

My 50" TV is not for PC gaming, though I do some PS3 stuff on it from time to time, its mainly for Blu ray Movies.

Well, I got the Samsung T240 today.........

Never thought that I would say this but.......holy smack! This LCD monitor has a great image quality compared to my (well, 8 year old) Mitsubishi 22" CRT.

I played NFS_MW and the reflection on the car was amazing, like mirror glass.

Problem? The resolution, 1900x12000 is huge and the monitor itself is huge as well, I was getting used to the 1280x1024, but now? I have to open FF3 and sort of minimize it to the center of the pic, otherwise it'd be too big to read.

So far I'm happy, not bad for $400 and $10 for a 4 year warranty.

BTW, as a macho man that I am, I did not read the manual and all this time I'm trying to figure out where the on/off button was and guess? lower right hand corner of the bezel...touch on & off.
