You can always boot up without it. Perhaps the best idea would be to set it up with X windows. Install both webmin and foldingathome and then disable X. (webmin > http://www.webmin.com/)

I'll have look into what system to borg for this. Maybe fold7, because it is super easy to get to right now to add another NIC.

I'll bug you when I get one of these things booted with linux. Thanks so far

So with the help of SparkyJJO, I noticed I wasn't using the awesome smp core. So I stopped all the folders and turned them all back on. The non-smp cores will now just do -oneunit and disappear. All three WU's according to Fahmon will complete before the deadlines.

I also got Fahmon to work under linux, it's slick. I also use SSHFS so I can grab the data from my FreeBSD box (which is folding). Fahmon makes a nice 'webapp' page > http://texnofobix.net/folding/webapp.html

texnofobix I just want to say I think everyone feels the same as Sparky, incase there still was any doubt about it

Mike lol I use IM for quick questions and answers, something which it's more suited for then a forum. I brainstorm on IM, though I'm contemplating in putting up a BIG brainstorm thread just because I can't seem to get everything concrete and worked out so I'm stuck in this loop of not wanting to put anything up which isn't finished and I can't finish it seemingly because I am in need off external kinds of inputs I am lacking now.

Some things are better done in IM's, some things are better displayed in a forum. The sentence alone makes the diffrence clear imo

I think when you want to do what I write about, you pick up the phone?

As stated when I started, no promises. My home team expects me back. I'm sure I'll be able to leave at least 1 rig running for XS though. And if an extra push is needed to get by someone, more points will appear.

    I like that!

It's not negative towards you, but I more appriciate new blood coming in then blood being transfussed from team to team. I rather have fah's total output grow if you know what I mean and I think you do

Seeing how people are able to look above the team aspect and just enjoy the crunching experience whatever happens makes me all fuzzy inside as well

I love the idea of folding with my idle computer. Too bad it is against corporate policy to fold on these machines at work. I wonder how amazing folding would be on a mainframe .... doubt it would work with out some elbow grease. And besides, I don't own my own mainframe ... yet.

Got one of these 5509 430 point WU right now. I'm down from

    1m19s /frame on 5504,
    1m24s /frame on 5506 to

2m04s /frame on 5509. Predicted PPD went down from 5k to 3k. Bleh. I need a second card.

This is with c/s/m: 648/1890/800 on my 96GSO. Temps went up by 6°C.

that's pretty typical of stanford's fah team... it's almost a bait and switch tactic. they did the same thing with smp and ev1 went out and built quad farms, then the ppd got yanked...

now it's happening to nvidia, ev1 went out and built nvidia farms, then whammo-yanked the rug out...

I don't know why they have to be so fickled and favoromatic about all their new stuff... it borderlines on unprofessional tactics...

would it have killed them to leave smp points similar to 2653 units ppdwise when moving to 2665.. NO! the work is still getting done.
would it have killed them to leave the points structure alone when moving to these new nvidia wu's... NO! the work is still getting done.

seriously, the work is stil getting done, all this ppd shuffling does is cause user unrest and complaints for fah.
someone at fah needs to get a business oriented focus team together, and teach them how things are done in the real world to keep customers happy.
a happy customer is a loyal customer... that basic 100yr old business concept has somehow flown right over pande and his group.. no focus or consistency whatsoever

I don't understand either, particulary why the hell they decided to lower the points for a wu that gets more work done. I mean, it's taking a whopping 40/frame longer, that alone would have been a big enough hit, now wouldn't it? Seen your production post for the new WU.

    But tell me, what's ev1?

Whoah, wait! I've netted a whopping two second gain on these WU by raising the core to 756. Yay.

everyone=ev1.... it's just a broad general term meaning a large group of users...

this is the same thing they did to smp earlier this year with 2665 wu's.. so the general mo is the same... it's just a different client...

I used to get po'd.. but over the last 13 months or so I've gotten used to less than professional type decision making processes from fah.. they run it like a bunch of college kids on a school project, so you can't expect large complex decision matrix type logic in their actions... if you do, you'll be disappointed and always on the verge of saying "screw this"and abandoning the effort...

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Concerning that SMP thing and now the lower point GPU wu, I think I've always gotten in at the wrong time. I invest in a quad (okok, just bc my E66 went up in smoke) and the points drop like a rock. I invest in a GPU and BAM, the points drop again...

I'm not loosing faith here since I'm folding for a cause and not for points, but as you I'm feeling this all is a bit odd. This is not the way to get ppl enthusiastic about the project and build some kind of challenge now is it?

Maybe they don't want those of us who still run the old single CPU client to feel too far behind

Ditto! I've gone on strike and shut down my rigs in protest of their actions at least 3 times. Now I just shrug and roll with the punches.

So it turns out my uncle has bought a new laptop and he ditched the desktop that i gave him a while back. It has crappy specs but everything else is fine, decent Rosewill case, Enermax PSU, 20GB Maxtor. The DVD drive is a PITA because it only opens when i put a pin in the release hole, i figure i can overhaul it on the cheap. I need to find a cheap mobo with IGP, 512 or 1gb of RAM and an Athlon 64/Sempron. It'll probably take a while but if i can have it crunching with 9600GSO in the future it's worth it or whatever happens with the next gen of GPUs and folding.

True, i'm sure there are a lot of psst off people who spent a lot of cash on CPUs/mobos/RAM and a lot of time OCing. The carpet was pulled from under us and now GPUs are king. It's cool now that i have Nvidia GPUs in both rigs, but before that i was ticked off as well.
