EDIT: can anyone point me to a comparison of this card and the nVidia 280? Thanks

Just fitted mine, no problems. Idles around 24-27C (800/3600) which is near my loop temp, one core gets to 30C or so on furmark. Block works very well and no increase in the loop temps that I can see. Just to be on the safe side I replaced the standard screws with stainless hex socket button screws and M3 pvc washers.

Does anyone know if you're supposed to put thermal pads on the "pulse" chips as well? According to the EK installation sheet, you're not. But on the stock cooler one of them has a pad, while the other one is cooled by the fan.

Only just got mine setup, so too early for results. I did put thermal pads on the pulse chips.Does anyone know if you're supposed to put thermal pads on the "pulse" chips as well? Can I ask which out of these EK blocks are the safest to use please, the Acetal or the Arylic?
Still no spacers ... dissapointed again though they look very nice! Congrats ... on the looks.

EK doesn't make a full metal version
The Nickel-plated version is great-looking and won't discolour as much as copper will over time. It also looks very nice combined with the black Acetal top![]()

I experienced the identical problem with one of two EK blocks on my quad crossfire rig. It's not the washers, as the short was present both with and without the paper washers. The surface of the wblock is making contact with the VGA where it shouldn't, creating a short. I thought I had a bad video card until, like you, I tried the stock HSF and all worked fine. My workaround was to double up on TIM 'tape'. Using twice the amount seemed to provide the clearance missing and eliminated the short.

CEO Swiftech
sorry for reviving this thread, does anyone know if you need thermal pads due to clearance issues on the various chips, or can you apply as5 instead?
I'm guessing you mean conductive, I'd have thought it was non conductive, or at the very least neglible.
If I go the thermal pad route for everything bar the gpus themselves, what depth/height should I be looking at.
Reason I ask is because I am looking to buy a 2nd hand block, hence the need for some kind of TIM.
Regards Hens.
My Hd4870x2 is freezing pretty quick in all games with the EK waterblock.
I just installed the default cooler, and switched back to the EK again, and its defenitelly the EK.
Whats the deal?
I have all the spacers except for the back ramsinks as there aren't any for them.
Do yous guys know the cause? is this documented?
thanks

Hi!
Are you using none metal washers on the shorter screws?
What about contact and temps?

today I double checked everything and it got worse, freezes after seconds. But 100% ok with stock cooler.
Either way, I removed one screw some people say it causes freezes, and I loosened some others.
I just ran 20 minutes of futuremark and Fear2 without lockups so far.
I have spacers on all shorter screws. But none on those long ones that screw from behind on top of the ramsinks.
Temps are fine actually. I'm really impressed.
As I read on google, it seems that are some issues with one screw, and with some chips that are cooled by the stock heatsink but not with EK.
I hope you can help me find the cause![]()
