This is an old problem and easily solved.
Your ram is NOT compatible with the board.
The only Crucial ram compatable is PC 5400, swap your ram out and I'll bet the problem is gone.
Possibly???
It has a direct influence on stability so does CPU PLL
wrong gtl's and the chip is very hard to stabilize
leave everything alone but the multi, drop it to 7x450 and see if it boots, this will eliminate a FSB wall
Post back with your results

*scratches head* So with the PLL, what is considered suitable for daily on this board then if 1.56 is high? All I've done is upped the v-core from my 4.5ghz settings and it's booted and running perfect. So far prime has ran fine.

1.56PLL is not high anything above 1.70 for 65nm is bad anything above 1.60 for 45nm is bad.
This argument has already been done, if you need conformation take the time to search this thread or do what I did and call Crucial , X38 and Ballistix ram = NO

Got 440x8 stable (wasn't possible, huh?), with lower CPU voltage now, 1.304V from 1.336V.
Temps never go beyond 60C now.
Probably 440x8 (3.52GHz) is the limit on P5E with Q9450. Oh well, better than nothing.

Sorry, 1.56v in the BIOS so it's probably 1.66ish real. I'm still learning with this chip and BIOS. I think I abused my E6750 too much, but it was my first chip that I ever OC'd so it got slammed hard. Retired it to my LAN cube - I think ~6months @ 4Ghz has served me well
It's all on water and I'm about to re-do my loop with better cooling. So at least this time round the NB will have a real cooler :P
Debated whether or not to do the mosfets but not sure... maybe just get new heatsinks for them...

PS. I just got 4.8GHz running on the 266 strapNow it's stupid fast!!! Time to drop da voltages!

yes you are correct x48 chipsets run fine
But some users have ran Tracers on X38 without issue as well.
about 6 months ago there was a member with ram issues after a few pages of arguments I took the time to call Crucial and spoke to a level 2 tech support.
He reported that X38 is NOT supported, the only Crucial ram "officially supported" was PC5400

My 2GB Kit of crucial 8500 16F3's work but with just about everything on auto only. They are not stable either. Same goes for most my OCZ kits. Never knew there was a reported problem as I'm kinda a late comer to this board.(Picked it up @ Fry's for $145 clearance open box). At least now I know why I've had so much trouble.

thanks for clarifying that Grnfinger! I just ordered another 2x 1Gb set of the tracers as my 2Gb is just not enough (especially noticeable in Crysis), so I'm hoping all 4 sticks will run as fast and stable as just a single set. I just wanted to make sure that the general experience with the tracers is good with the x48 chipset before buying a 2nd set... Cheers!

Yep, exactly. A Crucial rep confirmed this to me and told me that Crucial Balliastix PC8500 are incompatible with X38 motherboards, and gave me a full refund on my Ballistix 4X1GB 8500. After 1 month of using them, I was getting random reboots and alot of problems, without any overclocking!
Since then, I'm using Corsair 4X2GB (8GB) PC8500 and it's working perfectly, even overclocked! 8GB!![]()

Hmm, I didn't notice any problems with my 16FD5 Ballistix 8500 running on my Maximus, at 600MHz no less.
we wont name names
I posted a link many many pages back where a member from OC forums had this Crucial problem, this is where my information comes from. Then like I said the disscusion turned into a argument so I called Crucial to put the matter to rest
Like I posted above some ppl have had NO issues running Tracers on the X38 board

I too have been running 16FD5 Ballistix 8500 on my Maximus since Feb. No problems here and I'm running a decent lil OC on them and the cpu. Now having said that I did have a lot of trouble with the single sided crap they were pushing on us back then. I wouldn't mind grabing some Corsair 2x2gb 8500's and seein what they could do for me.

Ummm, with new single sided Ballistix, or Old dual sided Ballistix? Because I have the old school dual sided Ballistix O/C and etc running perfectly in my system, 4x PC 8500 Ballistix Tracer(Old School/Orginal Revision Dual Sided) since Feburary (the Ram is older, I've had the ram since July 2007 4x1GB) 2 Sticks 24Hr Orthos/Prime Stable at 630.1 MHz @ 5-5-4-7, 4 Sticks 24Hr Orthos/Prime Stable at 601.4 MHz @ 5-5-4-7, no clue on the voltages I have not touched my bios since March :P , I actually have been running at the 4 sticks at 601.4MHz 24/7 and my whole system, BIOS, etc(Ignoring GPU and HD upgrades) untouched since Febuary/March
Not to accuse anyone of anything but..... personal experance says otherwise

Boots fine in Windows. Can run any benchmark, no problems. Can run any game for hours with no trouble at all. Tried relaxing the memory settings, no go. PLL is as high as i would go. FSB Term makes no difference. NB Volts also none.
Any stress test will fail after 5-30 sec: Orthos, OCCT, Prime 95.
Thank you!
Gah, running 4.8Ghz an dit gets fussy... it was booting now it's not, and then it is and then it's not... I think it's just voltage that's the issue though.... tempted to try for 5GHz even just for the screeny (I'm pretty sure I'll never get daily out of it). 48Ghz seems do-able though, not too high - can get it booting ~ 1.45v - was stable at 1.48v but I think I've changed something else like a termination voltage because as I say - it was deffo working just not 100% stress tested.... Will have a play around with it later...
