When is ATI going to get into F@H?

    Well?

I'm pretty interested in the 4870x2 for my new build so I'm wondering if ATI will bring out some optimizations or something in the near future.

Just to clear things up. I know you can fold on the latest ATI cards but they're very weak. I'm just wondering when the top dog ATI will crank like the top dog NVidia card.

I dunno, I hope so, because I want a 4870 so bad, I can get one from newegg for $250 AR, but folding is tempting me a little to an nvidia card... argh.

I'm not touching ati till they actually do support it. Who's to say it will be fully supported? Ati had last round, nvidia this one.

    We'll see.

I can speak from experience. MultiGPU solutions even if they give higher FPS do not give a better play experience. Even in games where a 9800GX2 beats the GTX280 in FPS the GTX 280 is a smoother more consistent ride. The 4870 is a good gaming card for the most part but not at all good for folding right now. If you are going to spend the money on a 4870X2 forget it and get a 280. You PPD will be higher and your FPS may be lower but your actual experience at the controls will be better. After the G200b launches your FPS won't even be better in most games if all the rumors are true.

Mak2000, I agree 100% percent. Quality and smoothness matter most to me. I was going to get a gtx260, but no worries, you won't be havint to deal with a ppd monster like that....

Nice lead btw. 250k is coming up fast huh?

My 3rd nvidia card will be here tomorrow while my ATIs lay on the table. I dont think they can optimize it enough to equal nvidias PPD...

You can get around 4,000 or more with dual SMP clients on Ubuntu, the 8800gt is only going to get you around 5,000...

8800 I can drop into fold6 right now, boosting it from a tad under 300PPD to that 5000PPD. The Q6600 I would need a PSU, RAM, and motherboard. More $$$ that I don't have.

How do you figure 4000PPD on the Q6600? Mine at 3.45GHz with one client doing 2665 is 2200PPD, it wouldn't double with a second client I wouldn't think

With Ubuntu you can get a lot more PPD and run 2-SMP clients, look at the names of my rigs. I am running 2 on every quad except 2 and those are windows...

RR are you using custom os's or notfreds?

On topic, them Ati cards will get more support if Amd is in a better financial position, anyone really blind to the fact that is hasn't been peachy over there and these kind of projects often get put on a low flame untill things get better ( or wurse yet ). I believe the same has happend to Amd's development team. If it's not r&d budget but a real hw limitation I will eat someone's 4870x2!! ( I will really, just ship them to me! ).

    Hi, I'm curious ...
Are you run all this F@H on one rig ?
    Is your QX9650 oc'ed ? B'cause I used Gainestown with 4SMP just gained +/-7xxx ppd .... points every SMP are +/-18xx ppd ...
Can I run CPU's 8SMP to gains the exact same ppd per SMP ? Or it'll just reduce the performance ?? I do intend to try it ... Just need some input ...

    PS : VISTA 64Bit ...

Wow. Nice PPD for SMP. Not sure about your question though. Trial and error, I guess.

    Just a thought though ...
Heard a rumor said max can run 8SMP without ppd effected ...
So I plan to set the affinity to 2threads for each SMP ...
or I'll need to gather all the Nehalem(Gainestown + Bloomfield) systems to run all this SMP <-- Just an option
    Hope it'll work

you'll have to try and see what happens.... you have 16 cores, so that would be 8 smp clients to maximize the thread... (going from it takes 2 smps on a quad to get alll the cycles).
and I think you are allowed 8 machine id's... so it's probably doable. no idea how it scales software wise on 16 cores though... that would be 32 threads of fahcore_a1

Not good enough, esp. that P3065 total just 9xxx ppd totally drain off the performance ...
