    p5q dlx overclock

hi I have tried overclocking to 4ghz but but with no luck tried 400x10 and 450x9 but won't stop stable at 1.40v for longer than 15 mins. I've got 4 pin plug in should I try 8 pin thanks for your help David

If you have the appropriate 8-pin plug on your psu, use it. I doubt that is your problem though to be honest.

My ambient room temps are finally cool enough to run 440x8 for 3.52ghz. I am having a problem though. At 425x8 I was able to run my ram at PL7/strong and since I have increased the clock speed it is obvious I will not be able to run at PL7 but I can boot at PL8 and have found that I need 1.46vcore with the CPU and am now trying to pass an OCCT ram test at PL8 but I keep getting BSOD's and OCCT crashes. My ram passes PL8/Moderate with memtest86 v2.01 in DOS. What seems to be my problem? Here are my settings and my set-up is in my sig, thanks!

Try 1.45v to see if volts are the issue - even if you think thats too high for regular use (i dont beleive it is), it will identify that is where the problem is.

When I turn it back on, the bios is cleared as if I used clear cmos function.

I still cannot get past 1200 MHz on this board, 1200 is rock stable, 1201 MHz will not boot. This is using any strap. This issue is really annoying me.

Is anyone getting some good results with bios 1201?
I didn't have this issue since 0704 bios, maybe you are pushing the rams and board a bit too much so that it becomes unresponsive, post ya template again plz... also before trying out a new setting I opt to save in an OC profile in case off a complete unforeseen reset.... 1201 with the same settings as 1103 seems to give me a bit better bandwith and lower latency (but no miracles ofcourse)

Try 1201 mate, runs flawless here with the Qx... and try 3.6Ghz first and determine ya Vcore there and post back... could be some pll and GTL tweaking does the trick... Vcore at 3.6Ghz already gives a good idea what will be required for 4Ghz ops... if you are at 1.25 plus for 3.6ghz you can expect pretty easily 1.4vcore for 4ghz ops.... hows ya cooling ?

One of the reasons I almost never use memtest in dos as it seems to be stable there, yet your OS can crash in a flash...I still love XP as it's less hard on ya OC's then Vista... just try to disable static read control and see what gives or loosen to PL 9... think it's time to settle for some slightly looser settings to increase stability... does the CPU and co pass all small tests, ya rig caps out in blend or large mode ?

I wouldn't run my precious Qx daily over 1.4, think he needs to verify all the settings and power connections and get the hang of the board and settings before pushing on... templates are nice but each CPU/Mobo/Ram combo is different... just like women lol

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

Perhaps it is your ram, or your cpu. Not all do 4GHz with <1.40v. Some ram is also very sensitive to the secondary & tertiary timings. AUTO doesn't cut it for these rams.

Fill out the bios settings template and post it up here, that makes it much easier to help you out.

Thanks, I have only ran small fft's with prime95, I have not ran large or blend tests there. I am crashing when I run the OCCT Ram test for 2 hours. It will run for 1h45mins and then crash. I think I should just try without Static read control and then maybe go to 2.0v for ram and if all else fails I will go back to 3.4ghz because my ram runs really good there and the extra clock speed is not worth the slash in ram performance to me. Thanks, again

I guess price of cpu does directly relate to how much juice you are willing to feed it. my e8400 was pretty cheap so if it starts to fade after a year I wont really be upset (good excuse to upgrade) but if I had dropped over a grand on an extreme quad things may well be very different. I still dont think small tests over the comfort zone to see if volts are the issue is going to do much if any damage though (within reason) but trying other things first is the way to go if you are worried about it.

Hello guys ! First post here, just read 50 % of hundred pages. Huge topic ! Wow.

I think, by my personnal experience, Bios 12.01 is,for me, the most stable i ever used, all olds ones (other that first one) give me issues like windows freez or BSOD. With this bios, it's then the first i can boot on 480 FSB. But 481 don't boot. I'm not an O/C guru as well that's sure but if someone can give me some tips for using an 500*8, it would be nice !

My 24/7 config is 3.6 ghz stable with OCCT 2hours passed without craches.

I can run 480 FSb but only for viewing movies or listenning music , normal use. i can't play or ful load cpu freez my vista. But on idle, it's ok. T° are 34 ° idle @ this core.

Probably not an issue, but what are people finding their motherboard temps reaching? I'm using everest to display, but im sure other things give the same reading - I have noticed it goes as high as 40c when/after doing some of the stress tests. While 40c is not a big number compaired to a lot of other components these days, my old 680i board only ever got to about 33c in the same case (P190 with lots of big fans everywhere).

Is that anything to worry about? What part of the board is this a temp reading of anyway?

    Two annoying bugs:
1.If you press the power button on first express gate screen and then turn on the computer, OC will always fail.
2.If you put computer in hibernating (I am using vista x64), when you wake up it, all chassis fans will be on 500rpm. I have qfan disabled but the same will happen if it is on.

Here's my template for what settings will be stable at DDR 1199 MHz, but fail to even boot when raising the FSB & therefore ram by 1 MHz. The fact that I am totally stable at 499FSB/DDR1199 then it totally fails to even boot at 500/1200 is obviously a board/bios issue of some kind. I am quite an experienced overclocker and this type of behaviour is very strange.

I have tried every strap at every possible FSB/Ram frequency combination to no avail. 1200 + ram speed is not possible.

I know that seems to be totally oposite to what would work.. but with those settings I have had no problem booting over 1200. I was playing around with mine tonight and would not boot when i chaged from mod to light (wtf) back to mod and booting again... (still failing stress, but i may be just trying to push it too hard).

My only other differnce was more volts, but we have differnt ram and yours may melt at my 2.3v

I'm glad too see you got strap 400 to work as well as the RAMs over 1200. I'll give it a try this weekend.

I suggest you try other memory divider to make sure your RAM can do over 1200 on this board. Maybe 400fsb 266strap 1200RAM would be a good test.

WHat is the tighest PL can be reached ( and what strap/divider) up to 450FSB? ( P35:PL 6 / X38/48 : PL7) and what can be reached when doing 500FSB( what strap/divider)?
Any word about the new BIOS: 1201, better then 1103 and 0704?

Thanks mate but no go. I tried those combos before, and just did again then for the hell of it, and no go.

I just updated to bios 1201 and made no difference. I was hoping it would. I'll just keep playing with it.

No, It's not my cpu holding me back. I can be stable at 571 FSB with those vcore/vPLL/vVTT settings. It's either my ram, or the MCH, or bios, that is my issue. However as this has been my situation from bios 0610 to 1201, I think I can rule out bios. It must be ram or MCH.

In bios 1201 the ram voltages for me have changed. Now:

    Bios/ Real Idle/ Real Load
    1.96v /1.97v / 1.98v
    1.98v /1.99v / 2.00v

Now I basically get what I set, and it increases by 0.01v under load. That is much better.
