    Spinpoint HD642JJ (640GB Samsung F1)

Anybody have one? I can not find a single review of it!

Is it as fast as the 1TB version? I'm thinking of using two of the 640GB ones in RAID 0 but I need to know that they are as good as the 1TB ones

yes, these drives use same platters as the 1TB F1 ... you will get same performance ...

I have the 320GB version and I get around 93mb/s STR ... pretty good

Can someone please confirm whether the Samsung 1TB has 320GB platter or 250GB platter.
    Technically 4 x 250GB = 1TB is sensible to me than 3 x 320GB = 960GB which doesn't exactly equal to 1TB.
    I know numerous people on the other thread have said the 1TB version has 320GB, but I I don't get how 3 x 320GB platter = 1TB
A single 320GB platter = 320GB total capacity or two 320GB platter = 640GB total capacity HDDs in ther other models would make a lot more sense to me.

the 1TB drive does not have 320gig platters, it has 334GB platters and thats why it has a bit of a speed advantage over the 320GB and 640GB version

    Oh wow!
Is that the largest single platter HDD up to date?
334GB platter F1 1TB and it's the cheapest 1TB HDD on the market.
It's gonna be hard to resist since it's on special promtion of $155 from NCIX retail stores today only !

Nevermind, I'm still at home at this point so that means I'm going to miss the sales opportunity only for today.
At a price of $155 for a 1TB F1 is for sure an excellent deal, plus it's local; but, I'm hesitant in getting a single 1TB F1 becouse I doubt I'll ever reach 1/2 of its capacity by the end of its life time.
From some research I've done this afternoon, I think going with two 640GB WD6400AAKS(2x 320GB platter) at $85 per drive from NCIX is the better option in terms of dollar to performance to capacity ratio.
I really want to setup a RAID 0 since the cost of this config is roughly about $170 before tax and that's just about $15 more than a single 1TB F1.

Here is a benchmark comparason between WD6400AAKS vs 1TB F1 from a user who owns both drives:

I have both drives. My WD 640GB seems to be just slightly faster than my Samsung F1 1TB.

    Western Digital WD6400AAKS
    http://www.dragonbytes.org/images/HD...AAKS-00A7B.png
    Transfer Rate
    Minimum: 55.5 MB/s
    Maximum: 118.0 MB/s
    Average: 92.5 MB/s

    Access Time: 12.2 ms
    Burst Rate: 143.3 MB/s
    CPU Usage 2.7%

    Samsung HD103UJ
    http://www.dragonbytes.org/images/HD...NG_HD103UJ.png
    Transfer Rate
    Minimum: 53.0 MB/s
    Maximum 116.7 MB/s
    Average: 91.1 MB/s

    Access Time: 13.8 ms
    Burst Rate: 118.0 MB/s
    CPU Usage: 2.5%

I also had some F1 750GB drives (250GB platter drives, so were slower). And it seems these F1 drives in general seem a tad on the flaky side to me. All the F1 drives would behave oddly if all 6 SATA ports on my motherboard were in use, which my Western Digital and Seagate drives didn't have any issues with. But only in AHCI mode. And usually only when doing a full format or a chkdsk /r. Quick formats and chkdsk /f would work fine.

All the F1 drives had master cylinder errors, but that is because the diagnostic HUTIL software is crap and Samsung has done a terrible job getting it updated within a reasonable time frame (dang drives have been out for half a year I think).

I'm very happy with my WD 640GB drives. I'm okay with my Samsung F1 1TB drive, since it's issues are rare and predictable (I just need to unplug one other SATA drive or disable AHCI mode before formatting or doing a full chkdsk). But the WD drive seems to be the better drive.
Surprisingly, the WD 6400AAKS with its 2x 320GB platter design slightly beats Samsung 1TB F1's 3x 333GB platter design.
For an user who's not going to fully utilize at least 1/2 of a capacity from a 1TB drive, the 640GB is the better option for almost half less in price.
Plus if I was comfortable in paying the price for a 1TB F1, I may as well as spend $15 more to get two 640GB, 2x 320GB platter design, and set them up in Raid0 config.

As you might have already read the other WD6400AAKS thread here, users here have very similar results, at least it's very comparable to the 1TB F1. But configuring AAM for a HDD is what bothering me the most right now.

    Edit:
    Added WD6400AAKS vs HD103UJ

These numbers seem rather low. What is going on here?

My 750GB F1 gets average transfer rate of ~99MB/s and Access Time of ~12.5ms, as well as burst rates up in the 130's. This is without any RAID or anything. The 1TB F1 drives I've seen online have all performed similar, or better, than my 750GB drive. It just seems like those numbers that person got are a bit low.

Is this disk your operating system? Judging by the drops to 0 the disk has it is being used while benchmarking it.
