Lightbulb From FX5900 to FX5950Ultra in the blink of an eye.

Came across this thread, dunno if it has been posted before here, never seen it anyway.

    http://discuss.futuremark.com/forum/...0&fpart=1&vc=1

Flashing the bios of the card to the FX5950U bios seems to increase Vgpu and Vmem so it can run @ 5950u speeds.

Here's a link to download the 5950U bios:

    http://www.leadtek.com.tw/support/do...?pronameid=329

Really curious if someone here tried this....

Cool, just talked to Kunaak about this because I was curious.

I am seeing other 5900's top out at almost the same core speed as me (on air), and am wondering if we are all just blocked out from going higher and a BIOS flash to the Ultra card would fix this.

My only concern is my memory maxes at 900 3D stable (driver 44.03), so I hope this doesn't kill them or cause mad artifacts.

If you flash it your card will be recognized as an 5950U, also on the orb.

I'm a little unsure about the mem as well, i don't think 2.8ns chips will be able to cope with these speeds.

But if you read the thread you can see there's a guy who flashed his "LT" (lite?) version which is a budget version and has got to have 2.8ns mem.

Maybe the xtra voltage does it?

Mine has 2.2ns ram at 850mhz.

    2.8ns is only 700mhz.

I only saw core speed inreases, and no mention of mem increases at all.

This makes me think that if my card is pushed to 950, it won't even work. The card "crashes" at 920 or so, it would be way past its limit. It starts slowing down after 905.

I don't want to end up with a dead card...so i'll watch for some more results first.

I believe if you flash the 5950U bios it raise the voltages so there's no need for a Vmod.
You probably would've ended up about the same methinks.

Soulburner, just back-up your original bios in case it won't work you can flash the original bios back.

In the worse case you won't get any signal to your monitor, you have to put in an PCI videocard and flash your original bios back.

Sound too good to be true, doesn't it?

    That's exactly the problem.

    I don't have a PCI card.

It doesn't matter if I backup the BIOS or not, if I get no display on the monitor im screwed.

    make a boot disk
make a batch file to flash bios

    run the batch file blindly

Well if it can be flashed dos the way I'd do it would be to get a dos boot disk, and then make a batch file that runs the flasher with the commands and put that file into dos's autoexec.bat but theres probably better ways of doing it.

i dont think doing it blindly will be a problem i did a bios flash blindly to return the orginal bios when i flashed my 9700pro with 9800pro bios all you need is a boot disk with every file you need in it and write the command to a paper and just do it lol

OTOH, I tried flashing an 8500 BIOS onto an 8500LE, the flash erred and the card would not take any BIOS after that, blind or otherwise. Even tried using two vid cards, a good one and the 8500LE and flashing, nope. Toast.

soul batch file is nothing then flash command only write that command in notepad the command that flashes the orginal bios and save it like "saveme.bat" on the a boot disk if anything goes wrong boot your computer with that floppy and when loading is finished (determine it by looking floppy light) type saveme blindly wait for floppy light then wait for another min (to get it save) then restart thats all

Alright i'm gonna go make a backup of my BIOS.

    WFFLASH -S correct?

This isn't working, I get an error message when using WFFLASH -S saying programming failed? Its not very good english but I would assume this to be saying invalid syntax?

I tried supplying a filename like WFFLASH -S 5900.rom but it says the same thing. Disk has plenty of free space on it.

    Leadtek A350 (5900NU) @ Leadtek A380U (5950U)

I was limited to 490/900 for my fastest 3DMarks before, i'll test it now and see how it does. Already passed 03' fine.

HUGE boost in memory speed already.

After being limited to 490/900 as a 5900NU...

I am now 3D stable at a whopping 535/965 on the stock cooler!. Which isn't even a good cooler because the GPU reaches 70c during gaming.

This is a huge boost in clocks. However this is with driver 53.03 and I hear the old drivers (44.03, what I use for 3DM01) don't clock as well. I will try this card with the older drivers next.

Also, this is only as far as the NV drivers will allow me before saying "The test failed to run at the specified settings". However the card never started to slow down with increased clocks like it did before, so more voltage has definetely been applied to the GPU and DDR both.

I am going to try and clock higher with another program now, before testing 3D with 44.03.

What's the best clocking program for Nvidia?

Well the NV drivers were pretty accurate, clocked at 545 it locked up in my testing (Dragothic) using Powerstrip.

Core temp reaches 60c, cooler than before. These drivers report a 10c lower temp than 44.03.

I'm going to read up on driver modding and get this thing working with 44.03 now, and see what kind of gains I can get out of 3DM01, and i'm also going to try to rig up this 1U copper heatsink to see how much higher this thing will go on air.
