Will the early socket 939 boards use DDR II or what?

When are they comming out anyway? I'm really in a stickey situation right now. I could get an a7n8x for my main rig that I'm gona get a case for than hope I can mod my 8rda and pull some monster clocks on it with my chiller or get an A64 rig. But than I'd probley be better off waiting for NF3 250s than I'd end up kicking my self for not waiting for the socket 939 but than it will probley go DDR II soon after if not right away and I didnt get mushkin PC3500 for xmas for nothing...

    What should I do?

Socket 939 will not be DDRII. They will probably run 939 for a while so you will be fine with DDR memories. They need to both change the on-die memory controller and socket for DDRII (ofcourse the voltagereg for the memories too) and it doesn't seem like they will do it very soon. But it will be a long wait for the socket 939. nF3 250/G will probably be here pretty soon though.

Well hard to decide. But you can't keep waiting for the next best all the time

I don't have a whole lot of proof, but from what I've read, and things that have happened in the past I don't think we'll see ddr2 popping up till late this year (around sept-nov) but thats really just a guess.

How do you know it will be cheaper charlie? I dont think Intel would bring out a brand new processor sub-450.

Intersting, acordding to that the Athlon FX will move to 939pin in the first Q of 2004 and 939pin mainstream processors won't hit till the 2nd (late) Q of 2004. Sweet i might as well get my speakers now then

Okay, so there will be socket 939 clawhammer processors and the budget newcastle core. I though they would wait until the San Diego for s939.

Intel wants DDR2 out alot faster then AMD. AMD wants to follow whatever is mainstream, and planned obsolesce (of DDR) will hurt them more then Intel. Intel's a giant and still thinks it can set whatever the mainstream for PC's will be (RAMBUS didn't scare them enough to not try it again). Intel will be dependent on chipset/northbridge support for DDR2. While AMD's on-board memory controller allows them to switch over to DDR2 alot quicker - motherboard companies won't have to wait for final production chipsets to arrive.

Intel will have DDR2 motherboards in place when they release LGA775 Prescott's around mid-year 2004 (expect a delayed Q2 launch). AMD is waiting towards the end of 2004/early 2005.

AMD have time to lower their prices before that

I'd wait until the NF3 250 and Prescott have arrived, then buy what's best.

errm, its all of $20 cheaper, and SLOWER. Remember, Intel keep saying this chip won't match the 3.2EE, the 3.2EE doesn't really beat teh fx51, and the 3400+ can beat teh fx51 in some areas. Mostly in gaming, so teh 3400+ is almost certainly gonna be faster than the 3.4prescott. We've already seen 2.65Ghz on watercooling on the 3400+.

I can't see much between them to be honest, BUT, I wouldn't say that either is cheaper. DO people even know for sure which boards will runi the prescotts? seriously i haven't really looked for info before now. Also, most places say prescott stock in around 10 days from suppliers, i can get one to me listed as 23rd latest, probo gonna grab a 3.0Ghz at £162

The current amd prices are head and head with the projected prescott prices. There is also another month for amd prices to drop lower. Also the 3600+ and the fx-53 are expected to come out shortly after which will drop the prices of the other processors.

Hmm, upgrading to a 3ghz prescott would be quite fun. Hopefully they're kind of like the 2.4c's and overclock really well. It'd be cheaper, but it really depends on how well the sockect 939 is doing.

Well I'll tell you WHY the Prescott "MAY" be better...
MDZCPA right now benches at like 4170mHz, and like 26,500 3D marks, with a Prescott 3.4 he very well may be able to bench at 4300 and in all likelihood, 4300 Prescott beats 4170 EE ESPECIALLY using 17 multi, like 17 x 253 1:1 2,5,2. However the .09nm process is really new and noone knows how it will OC.
Prescott will become KING once the steppings allow 4.5gHz + to the normal non 404 MachI/II users... PLUS, the first Prescott to bench at 5ghz will do damage.
However, the AMD line of FX-53/55 (or 56) whatever looks REALLLY hard to beat in the new 939 pin .09nM layout...
I think 2004 is the YEAR OF AMD...and Intel may rush production of Tejas, which on PAPER looks like an A64 killer...

Intel Grantsdale chipset successor of Canterwood will support 533mhz DDRII, coming in Q4. it will be launched sometime after Prescott.

Socket T(LGA 775) will feature new BTX form factor, and PCI express.

Prescott will be compatible with socket 478 and socket T.
