non-watercooled ( stock) fan @50% with 790/1075 overclock I couldnt even run furmark for more then 1 minute without a crash or system restart. So I used ati tool here is my temps before watercool (room was 78F). *NOTE* compare the gpu-z temps too. Who knows which program is right! Also note 0 gpu load on first pick and 82c on VRM with no load. watercooled setup is under 98% load and stable with 790/1075 overclock. But ocing doesnt effect the VRM I get same temps no matter what on the VRM.

Afterwatercool setup and room temp of 80F Furmark stable floating point on VRM 124-126 no crashing.

BTW when I modded the heatsink down I used the thermal putty that was being used for the memory for the VRM chip and the small chip right behind it

is everyone sure Everest is reading the VRM temps correctly? ATI insists nothing on the cards gets too hot with the default fan profile. 126° is insane if it's true.

I think this is just a weird bug, because Furmark with AA enabled is always in the 80-90s, 0xAA 126c within a minute. Gone past caring now, just play me games, if it dies rma time.

Point being furmark is the only thing that pushes it that far. It is obv pushing it to its threshold or else video card wouldnt crash with stock cooler. but im stable with furmark even if its reaching 126c im not crashing anymore so that makes me happy

I think you over-generalize it a bit. No, I don't think the stock cooler is that bad at all.

Or perhaps I am lucky because my HIS model with stock cooler @ 45% fan speed with 790/1100 ran furmark fine for more than 40 minutes without a hick-up.
My only concern is that the VRM termp gradually climbed up to 110-ish C, 5 mins into Furmark, and stayed there.

I initially ordered the Fuzion block from NCIX but now I am going to wait it out for the full-covered block instead.
IMHO the stock cooler does a decent job and subjectively speaking, it's not that noisy @ 40-50%. So to me it's either stock cooler
or full covered block because I am yet to see a better aftermarket air cooler (or GPU only waterblock option if that matters ) that cools the VRM better than the stock one.

I have already posted my inability to get my VRM temps on my EAH4870 but no one has any ideas so here my question goes again. Has anyone here had any problems with GPU-Z 0.2.8 or everest (trial for now) not reading a 4870's VRM temps? i have already posted a screenshot verifying i do have a 4870 and the temps simply are not there. anyone else with an Asus 4870 have this problem??? All everest gives me is Shader, MemIO, and DispIO temps but nothing else

well after trying to install Iandh memory and vrm kit i realized the Asus 4870 may not be a reference design as the supplied VRM heatsink does not fall in line with the VRMs and i have not seen any news of this on other 4870's. the VRM's on mine are in sets of 2 for a total of eight instead of a single line. Maybe the different design has omitted the VRM sensor o well i suppose.
