i stumbled onto something you guys might find interesting. i noticed my Windows audio panel always showed i had 7.1 speakers set up even though i usually only have a pair of headphones plugged in. this became a problem in some games like Source games or UE3-based games that set the audio based on your Windows settings. if i changed the Windows setting to headphones or stereo speakers, it wouldn't take. it would immediately go back to 7.1. i learned that if you disable "stacsv.exe" in the Task Manager you can change the settings and it will actually stick - at least until your next reboot.

if anyone has a more permanent solution, i'd love to hear it. the fix i'm using now is kind of a pain.

My GOD this thread is HUGE. Maybe one can make or provide a quick summary on the initial thread that will include:

    • DO's and DON'ts
    • Vmods
    • Installation driver headaches
    • Bios Setups

138 pages!...I could read a good chunk of Lord of the Rings before I compile this information!

DO: set your "post per page" to 60. Only 23 pages.
DO: be methodical in your overclocking. Keep records.
DON'T: increase voltages "to be safe". An overvoltage will make things as unstable as an undervoltage.
DON'T: accidentally set the CPU Voltage Offset. It adds 0.3v.
DON'T: set memory timings too loose. Again can cause instability.
DO: use the calculator in my sig to see what's going on at different ratios, speeds and multipliers.

    No vmods needed or available.
Drivers depends on OS. For Vista, you don't NEED to install any but you can.
If you do, install the chipset drivers first.
Update to BIOS 1554 and turn the watchdog off.

Yep! Same here. Only 7.1. Audio drivers are terrible. When i make install from DX38BT CD it was Sigmatel. Next time, when i update the drivers from Intel's website, audio hardware became IDT...

I only have the stock Vista drivers and I get 5.1 and 2.0 just fine via the S/PDIF out jack.

i had the exact same problem with my onboard audio. I called intel, they said it was a known problem with windows xp. i called windows, they said since i had a oem version of xp they could not support me without a 60$ charge. lol. a $32 sound card later and prob is fixed.

Don't worry about the text file. It doesn't have anything interesting in it.
Run small FFTs first. They're processed in the CPU cache so a failure usually means it's CPU related. Once you can get Small FFTs to run for a few hours, run Blend to test the memory.

I see I'm not the only one that hates these audio drivers. They are terrible. Haven't had improvements for Vista in a while also. Petr0id, regarding Sigmatel/IDT, Sigmatel is no more for a long time now, it's now part of IDT. Can't remember seeing Sigmatel still in the drivers on the CD but it's funny. I tried asking Intel, since they should provide support for these drivers, regarding driver and GUI updates but they wouldn't comment. The GUI v1.8 is terrible, tried to find the new Vista v2.0 they talk about in the driver docs but couldn't.
Regarding the USB issue a couple of pages back, it is in fact the way it should work. If USB Legacy is enabled in BIOS, USB support is present during POST and in BIOS, but it's disabled for a while after POST and just before the OS loads USB drivers. So, for that short period there should be no USB devices recognized.

What are your core temps at idle and load? I'm finding mine on the high side, 44/45ºC at idle according to CoreTemp. It's hot here now and I have the case fans set to low speed but still.

if you fail the blend test, then you've managed to trace your problem to either your memory settings and/or your north bridge/FSB settings. it's just a matter of adjusting those values from there. you're very close.

New Wolfdale stepping coming up, E0 to replace current C0. OC seems better still, new PECI implementation for better DTS readings, new instructions for FPU/SSE, PSI support for Deeper Sleep mode and some others. Power consumption is even lower now. First will be E8600 at 3.33GHz followed by E8500 and E8400.

    Good news
    New BIOS 1782 is on.
    Bad news
Only updated processor support listed, whatever that means...
New infrared CIR drivers as well, for who cares...

    Disappointed now!!
Anyone tried the new BIOS yet, to see if anything new, like PL/tRD?

It on my Intel board I have run memory test in vista and came out with no errors and I ran OCCT and it said stable. I google it, it could be something with network drivers or video drivers not sure.

i've had a lot of blue screens since i got this motherboard, but they've all been caused by software. just bad luck, i guess. for me it's usually had something to do with an antivirus program or system monitoring software (like Everest and IDCC).
