so i am trying to mount the CPU water blocks but i have no idea which set of back plates to use.
I noticed on the first post, jcool used the rectangle ones, for his thermalright heatsinks, but which set do i use for my EK Supreme water blocks.
same thing? just want to make sure i don't mess this up

Linux 64bit, any distribution should do fine. No need to buy anything. Put that extra $200 towards more RAM or something.

Very good waterblocks , although you'd need a strong pump for 2 blocks in series. Also pretty cheap (45€ /piece)

or get a y-split and feed each one, then use another y-split to join it together.

milkmandan, try to use the two hexagonal metal colored ones, or none at all. That black thing seems to be only for insulation purposes, as it is not solid.

definitely in series...
if you do them in parallel and something goes wrong (bended tube etc.) then your cpus are not equally cooled or maybe one of them is not cooled at all without you noticing it (the flow always takes the path of least resistance!). despite that your pump has to do the same work anyway, so no change there...

hex seem weak but i'll try it

i am pretty sure i need some kind of backplate to mount my waterblocks
those 4 holes are pretty big

Yeah, these S771 holes are very big, but if you apply the hex plate it should narrow them enough to just stick the EK mounting screws through. Doesn't matter if they're weak, normally the Ek Supreme is mounted without any backplate, so you'll be fine.

And no you can't use the rectangle ones with the EK Supreme, obviously, unless you drill some holes. But as I said, backplate isn't really needed for these coolers. Also don't tighten them too much, they don't cool better but sooner or later the mobo will bend.

Also when you removed the NB heatsink on your rig, when you reapplied thermal paste, did you use a non-conductive paste?

I have 1 stick of arctic silver 5 (i think this is conductive) and 1 stick of generic thermal paste that came with my HR-05/IFX (no idea whether is non-conductive or not). I don't want to over do it with thermal paste, and end up shorting something out on the Mobo.

I used AS5 as well. No danger of shorting anything, the E5400 NB is fully covered in a gigantic IHS.

Just put the as5 in the middle and let the hsf spread it as you mount it. works great

If I have a pair of Kingston memory in my Z7S and I want to install another pair of memory modules from a different brand (saime bandwdth), would it work? Would it be less optimal?

I wouldn't mix different ram brands because the SPD settings of the RAM could be different and cause problems.

More likely the AMB chips might cause the issue if anything. SPD's on FB-DIMM's are loose enough there's not much to worry about.

Hi Guys,

I just had gotten back from vacation. Had I miss anything? Seem like there was a talk about hacking the bios and msimax had have look into.

I also had look into the bios .302 using AMIBCP. The volt setting are there but it value are just in two digits number, which is hard to tell the actual volt.

Had anyone been able to order extra bios chip from Asus if the motherboard got brick from using a modify bios? It would be a back up just incase of a bad flash.

I had order bios from MSI 3 times after 3 bad flashes. The techies from MSI had always sent me the bios chip for free plus shipping. MSI tech supports are great and seem to understand the needs of oc enthusiast.

Update * Just contact ASUS at "helpdesk.asus.com". I was able to order two of the ASUS Z7S bios for 10 a piece and 15 for shipping.

If someone can provide me the modify bios, I will take the plunge to see if we could get addition power out of the Z7S.

We tried modding, but the program corrupts the bios. This is also stated somewhere on the program's webpage.. so I wouldn't go there until they fix the program. I guess the only way to alter your CPUs VID right now is via hardmodding the pins.

hey everyone..
so i took some extra time and lapped my Thermalright HR-05/IFX to a mirror image, yes i know it was unnecessary but i wanted to give lapping a nice practice. Took me 1.5 hours for this one heatsink.
Anyways, time to remove the NB heatsink on the Z7S but I can't seem to get the NB off. I've gotten the spring pins detached, but the whole thing is still attached to the mobo. How do i get this thing off?
