Not really, vista x64 performs well and imo is better than xp x64, eitherway, there's too many people that actually haven't used vista and yet complain about it being bad. Give it shot for a good month before you put it down, its quite good

Not to mention xp looks hideous to me these days coming from the streamlined look of vista

i know i know... my friend is running his ASUS laptop with windows vista ultimate and hasn't run into a problem yet. I just don't like the demand for memory and such that vista has, i could care less about all the pizaz of an OS, i just want it to work, do what i want and be fast. but i guess looks sell right? lol.

the looks do not compromise performance. the only requirement is having enough ram.

Lol first thing I did when moving from XP x64 to Vista 64 was disable all the themed interfaces and animated crap. I still am not sure if it was worth it for DX10, because in all other departments, vista has been a pile of crap. My sound card driver is very buggy in vista x64 (volume resets to zero on system startup). The folder view settings not saving is extremely annoying. PLParEQ no longer works. Driver signing is the biggest PITA I have ever encountered. I use two unsigned drivers, and I had to go through the nasty test signing process, then edit out the desktop watermark from user32mui.dll. UT3 crashes if I minimize it. The list goes on and on compared to XP x64, which worked perfectly. I am running Vista x64 Ultimate SP1 with all latest critical updates. Oh, and lets not forget that in test sign mode, you can't play back any DRMed HD content.

In fact the only reason I downgraded to Vista was so I would be able to use dual 4870X2s.

    EDIT:
Oh, and Vista is only marginally faster at launching applications than XP. However, after they are launched, they perform worse in Vista x64 than they do in XP x64. I have 8GB of RAM running at DDR2 1100.

I highly recomend you do NOT use the 8.7 Beta drivers, they have broke many things more than it could have ever fixed. Use the 8.6 Hotfix drivers instead.

Some things the 8.7 Beta's did:
    Wont read right in GPU-Z

Flashed my 4850 bios to fix fan speed issues and overclock higher and would not boot into windows, thought it was a bad flash so flashed back and it was ok but had to re-install windows to do this and it was a major pain. After the fact found it was the drivers, used the 8.6 hotfix and sure enough my bios flashed cards worked fine. Now 720/1050 overclocked and the fans are running normal speeds so my cards are not nuking themselves. The 8.6 hotfix is supposed to have the same display driver version in it anyways if I am not mistaken as the 8.7 betas, its some other stuff in there thats screwing things up.

Anyone know when the official 8.7 drivers will be released? It is pretty sad that when you search the catalyst drivers, AMD doesnt even list one for the 4800 series cards yet...... Ahh, they did get released right (as I type with my saphire card installed.)

Anybody know when the next drivers are getting released? I just formatted, and want to run the latest drivers fresh. Thinking of whether I should just install the hotfix and then upgrade when they come...

I can't imagine it being much later than monday next week. I mean, you visit their site and there is NO downloadable driver at all for the 4800 series "officially." Gotta love it.
