driverheaven, extremetech and hardocp links are broken.

and yeah, the 4870x2 performs pretty much how it was expected - like 2 4870 in crossfire. i hoped for them to reduce the consumption with both cores on one pcb further, guess i was wrong.

Those are PREviews, not reviews. The writers are still limited by some form of NDA, drivers are still worked on, etc. PRE-views, OK?

And this may be sports to you: "X beating Y"; but to me it's about this card's overall performance. And i'm impressed. The 2 x 1 GB version is going to be my next card.

    Dannyboy,
Keep in mind the performance you saw here today is a preview, the actual retail hardware and drivers might perform even better. When you look at how good we are already seeing things it fills us with glee to think it could even get better.

    [.]

This preview has shown a very positive light on AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2. Usually previews can go two ways, either it is going to perform really badly, or it is going to outperform our expectations. This was the latter; the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 outperformed our initial expectations. Even in this preview state the hardware and drivers have a very solid feel to them. The CrossFireX experience was easy to setup and worked without any fuss.

yea i took some thought and came to senses that it is a preview and that it is only a look at what ati have done and what can be expected, so is nvidia making somthing to compete i can see dramtic price drops on the gtx 200 cards and rumored cards to be made by nvidia asap to be on top

Look like ATI has a good high end product here, can't wait to see more reviews. I do have a question though, Nvidia has CUDA and support to if I understand it right also act as a physics board among running other apps, does ATI have something similar?

Also it was a little confusing some sites indicated 512 mb/core 1gb total and others listed 1gb/core 2gb total, which is correct? or are there more than one version of the card?

I'd like to know as well. It'd be nice to not have to upgrade, but if it uses much more power than an 8800GTX I may have to.

    No worries with an HX520

I think there are lots of people now sitting with old 88gtx's (including myself) which are worth crap when these new cards came out. I'm looking at an upgrade as well, but I think that the 4850x2 is a better choice for 1680x1050 gaming.

it would be a pretty good decision to "follow" ATi's direction and cheat at making a faster card. :P I use "cheat" because their cores aren't faster but they strap two together, and make it better. nVidia should do the same, and it may not be as cheap; but nvidia could work towards making their chips cheaper to create/more efficient.

I'm personally a bit of nvidia "FANBOI!" but I have to say, this monopoly that they've had on the market is bad, bad, and REALLY bad. Everyone knows competition drives performance, nvidia got way to comfortable at the top and let it slide. ATi was there to bite them in their ass, for assuming that they would always be on top of the GPU market.
To sum my post up, nvidia is probably going to pull a GTX280 GX2(or it's equivelant), or some kind of GTX280 Ultra... I really want these ATi cards to perform better though, or else nvidia won't have to wake up and smell the coffee.

i dont think that 2 cards on 1 pcb is cheating, to pcbs in 1 slot is worse IMO, but its much more cost effective to use 2 small dies than 1 gigantic die (and when your parent company is loosing money yields are a big deal) and 2 rv770 is still smaller than the 280

Your comment smacks of sour grapes.......and is much like the pot calling the kettle "black."

Dual gpu cards aren't exactly new, you know. The Voodoo5 5000 was one such card as well as teh Voodoo5 6000, which never made it to the retail market.

nVidia, too, has had their own dual gpu cards.....the 7950 GX2, remember that one? Even before that, Asus had an Extreme N7800GT Dual card, putting two 7800 GT gpus on one card.

So, if anyone is cheating, it was Voodoo and nVidia, well before ATi began doing it......

there were some dual 6 series cards as well if i recall correctly. as for "cheating" its not, its simple marketing you can buy this 1 card thats as fast/faster than these 2 expensive cards or this 1 really expensive card. Samething as the last gx2, why buy dual 8800gts sli when you can this 1 card and get slightly better performance?

anyone else looking forward to crossfired X2s vs sli 280

possible if your just running bare system, one or two HDD's, not a bunch of high Amp fans, bare system should be alright..but if you got alot goin on, a 620w would be on order or higher for good measure.

if your overclocking your cpu/memory and plan to try and overclock that x2, you better get a new PSU.

it will work for a while, but the componets will probably give out prematurely in the unit.

yea i see what some of you guys are saying, there are two versions yes somthing like one has 1gb and one has 2gb there were stuttering issues in the 3870x2 and amd have worked really hard to work over the problems from the previous x2 so this should be hopufully a better x2 and might show some positive sides when having two gpu's on the same board,oh and about how one of you's said dual gpu is cheating well that implys to me that you own a single core cpu aye cause dual core would be cheating lol spread your thoughts guys

I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly, but you did notice a CF after the Visiontek card? CF = Crossfire = two 4870 cards.

Given that a single 4870x2 is pretty much as fast or faster than 280 sli except for in crysis, from what techreport and anandtech show, i'm not sure the comparison is necessary.

HARDocp has a review with crossfire 4870x2's, but it looks like the drivers may not be all ready.

yea second that clearly shows that drivers are not optimized properly yet in some games, further more to come though i say ati may have finally done it and well i say good for them its about time nvidia stop the overpriced bull, you can see the dramatic price drops as they are scared and they should be they have been too lazy lol
