Interesting there testing I will call flawed though.

    Seriously why 1200x700 for crysis?

and how is the 4870 now comeing out slower then the gt260 in games?

    Looks good otherwise I guess.

4870x2 doesn't seem THAT good actually, although it's VERY good

The big problem looks to be the temperatures which is 94 core under load and will seriously hamper overclocking.

Yeah, indeed what about that ? In every other bench site 4870 was clearly faster than GTX 260 in CoD4 yet here it looks majorly behind

It's not.. in the review it's always coming on top, I don't know where you saw that.

In that review just a few posts up....it even fell behind in cod4 which it did alot faster in all other reviews.

It should be playable atleast at 1200x1000 all other reviews show it as possible for lower cards.

I think it's a fan speed issue just like the other 4000 series had.

It came out in front of the 260 in all the others though.

regardless, if the price is set right, this card will be a killer!

why on earth did they use catalyst 8.6?

it sure explains the lower 4870 scores

Hmmm... wonder if the prices on the 4870 will come down?

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

apparently powerplay isn't working which explains the high idle temps, but those load temps are just awful

"AMD did have some stipulations for our R700 preview, they were as follows:

    1. Previews can be posted any time after 12:01 am on Monday, July 14th.
    2. Previews can include benchmarks of any combination of artificial tests or games up to a maximum of four.
    3. As PowerPlay has not been enabled in the BIOS on your engineering sample, please stay away from Idle Power tests at this point.
    4. In the interest of leaving something for the full NDA lift in August, we'd ask you to keep this high level and not go deep on the architecture at this point.

Those "advantages" seem to only come through at 2560x1600 when the 4870s memory banks are flooded. As far as saying they are 15% faster at this point, this isn't anything to go by. I'll wait for some reference sample reviews before passing finale judgment. As far as fan speed issues, thats not the case. It is at 2600RPM at load ( which isn't quiet EVER ) and its still 90C. They did say they will tweak voltages and fan speed ( at idle ) so at least idle noise will go down but I'm betting these will be as loud if not louder than 280s. Thank god for watercooling.

EDIT : Anandtech claim noise isn't higher than a 280 so thats good to hear but I'm still sure its anything but quiet.

2nd that, for anything below 2560x1600 I notice that the X2 is competitive or perform on par with 4870CF. But this is a good start, let's just wait for some official reviews with more mature driver and hope for better performance.
I'm still in dilemma whether grabbing another 4870 or get the X2 for gaming at 1920x1200.

So you can't use triple buffer in SLI? Well that's pretty much a deal breaker for me if gaming on LCD. Can someone confirm that triple buffer works in Crossfire? I use D3DOverrider to force triple buffer in games that do not support it and there is no way I will go multi-gpu if it can't be used.
D3DOverrider doesn't work in Crossfire. I haven't found single Direct3D game where it's working, sorry. Actually I can't remember single DirectX game which uses TrippleBuffering succesfully, only 3DMark 06 (in demo mode) comes to mind. For OpenGL I'm not sure... it's been awhile since playing Doom3. =)

AFR + Triple Buffering is a no go, it's not a problem particular to Crossfire or SLI.

On other news, I'm rediscovering Crysis with Vsync! It kind of eliminates microstutter and everything is MUCH smoother at the same FPS, the only problem is some bit of input lag with Vsync. Now I remember why I called Crysis so smooth even at 30FPS while I had a single 8800GTX.

@Chickenfeed: Check out the Anand article, that's a 512mb (or 1gb whatever you call it) version of 4870x2 but has some improvements over 4870CF (Most notable in Crysis and GRID, the thing with GRID seems to be a bug though)
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Ok thanks for the info. Well if I stick to my FW900 i can run refresh rates high enough where I don't really need vsync, but if I understand correctly not using it introduces microstutter? Nice catch 22 there, hopefully the new interconnect has really eliminated as Sampsa's results indicate.

If I get a 24'' LCD multi-gpu is out of the question, no way in hell I'm playing on 60hz LCD without vsync and triple buffer (excluding Counterstrike or other multiplayer FPS of course). Still wondering how I never knew this before...
