CPU speed is fluctuating .... how do i stop it?

i have real temp running and it is showing my CPU speed going from 3GHz to 2GHZ when idle ...
what do i need to look for to keep my CPU at 3GHz all the time?

im running an ASUS maximus 2 board with and E8400

im trying to get this figured out so i can OC it ... but dont want to until i can get my CPU to stay at the same speed

go to bios cpu settings and disable speedstep / c1e

actually you can just disable all of the settings in the cpu menu and manually set your cpu multi if you plan to overclock.

You sure you got the right bios options? That should have done it. Also check the speed with CPU-Z cause that will also show you the multiplier...

Actually, go back into that same cpu menu in bios and see if they are all disabled. if not then you have the same bios bug I had in my p5k3 dlx. After you would disable them and save settings and reboot you would go back and none of the settings actually saved. I ended up having to rma the board. even reflashing the bios wouldn't solve it. go check and come back here.

ya i figured that EPU stuff would do something like this ... so i tried to stay away from it ...

hmmm what about a complete reinstall of vista? just in case ... and with disabling speedstep / c1e
    think that would help?

anything else in BIOS i could disable/enable that may help?

And you manually set your multiplier to 9x in the BIOS?

ok i upped the speed of the cpu and it has seemed to fix it ...

    its at 3159GHz
    multi 9
    bus 351
core volt 1.320 .... this one seems a little high ... should it be that high for such a low OC?
