The problem with HD4850 Stock Cooler is twofold : Card , Case .

Card : any replacement that lowers temps should translate to better OC because cooling the sensor and no the mosfets means nothing. you get the idea .

Case : heating up the case ( if indeed it does ! I doubt it produces THAT much heat , rather accumulation due to weak cooler) .

The best thing would be a 2 slot cooler .

I am planning on watercooling , but waitqhope for some better stock ( or else I'll pay for this cooler by reducing price at selling time)

    Hey keiths nice results!

Bear in mind though the S1 costs about $12 bucks though, even running passive it hoses the stock cooler while running in total silence!

Add on a quiet fan to the S1 (HeliModded of course!) and you got some room for overclocking.

    Horses for courses!

To help your stock cooler with minimum hassle:

Per Jimmyz's suggestion I secured a 90mm TT fan to the card intake area with rubber bands (front of card). I'm idling well over 20C less. 45C now but it's hot in here today.

Of course an 80mm etc would work too but the 90 fit the PCB perfectly fyi...

    Zalman VF-950

This is my remake of VF-900. Same thing with bigger and better 92mm fan. Would it be safe to run HD4850 @ 700/2300 (DDR) without heatsinks on memory and PWM chips?
I don't have any thermal tapes (and no friggin company is selling them in my country like they're illegal or something :what_the_f: ). Or does it heat so much it needs them either way?

    SKYMTL@Hardware Canucks

"Where the HD4870 used extremely robust Pulse and Vitec inductors for voltage regulation, the HD4850 needs a bit more mundane components considering the core and memory run at much lower speeds. To this end it is equipped with a quartet of larger inductors each of which is paired up with a set of smaller VRMs. Due to their small size in relation to the heat they produce, it is strongly recommended that you cover all of these components with heatsinks if you are going the aftermarket cooling route."

Since there is no way of gettings adhesive thermal dual side tapes, i was wondering if regular adhesive dual side tape would be good for the task?
Years ago i applied a 3M thermal tape (supposedly) to a nForce2 chipset and it looked just the same as regular dual side adhesive tape.
Anyone ever tried it? Was it ok?

Well I can hook you up with stuff (as can others I'm sure). I'm sat here smack in the middle of London and it would be just a matter of sending stuff in the mail!

Having said that I'm not sure if you have a postal service? haha if not we can examine the carrier pigeon angle!

Ok, i've asked zbogi (he's pretty well known around here hehe) regarding this and he said that dual side adhesive tape from Tesa (some red one) should do the trick just fine.

ok....so far everyone has said the Accelero S1 Rev. 2. did some research and found out that they dont sell those in South Africa, so want to find out...
what makes the Accelero better than these (that i can get in this country)??

    Z-Machine GV1000
    VNF100
    VF1000 LED
    Thermalright T-RAD2

Im planing on runing 2 HD4850 in CF and some of these coolers are thiner than the Accelero S1 wich is also a good thing to me.
    any other comments on those......??

Ppl, don't waste money for new coolers. If you have trusty Zalman VF-900 somewhere, don't throw it away or sell it. This bugger can still pack some serious punch.
You don't belive me? Check this out...

I'm thinking of getting this cooler for my HD4870 as well but I feel a bit disappointed since the temp ain't quiet that good compare to the HR-03 GT and consider the prices for these 2 coolers are about the same. Do you think it's a good idea to go with the DuOrb for the HD4870?

what is the dB rating from the stock HD4850/70 cooler@ 100% duty

some new tim and zip tie a 120 around stock card should be just as good as any aftermarket cooler.

I dont mind loud fans, it helps me fall asleep

Just got a 4850 yesterday with an AC S1. The problem is, the heatsink for the PWM chips does not fit. I took my dremel to it, and made a few pieces out of it. This is what I ended up with.

    Passive cooled, 33C idle, 48C load (6 120mm case fans at 2000rpm).

CTM Audi, needs registration on that forum :|

Heres a mod from Mucker, from AnandTech forums. Worth the penny to take a look.

Well, I managed to fit an Accelero S1 (Revision 1) onto one of my 4850's. The bolt holes are a perfect match. Result is a 40C drop in idle temp; beauty of it is......it's FANLESS. 78C before and 38C after in 80F ambient air. I expect to see only a 14 degree delta between idle and load, as I did with my 3870, so max temp load should be around 53-55C, again, without a fan! I need a good 3rd party tool such as RivaTuner to get a good trendable graph of load temp (not available for 4850 yet). The S1 is a great piece of cooling gear, arguably one of the most efficient air cooling devices ever made for the PC.

The mod I am going to show is for my personal satisfaction. I don't encourage anyone to try this unless they are completely comfortable with doing so. I accept no responsibilty for any mishaps that may occur. I am providing this as information only.

Here is a shot of the S1 Revision 1 base (perfectly aligns with holes on card).

    S1 Base

I did have to hack up the stock heat so the PWM area would be covered. A nice little hack saw job did the trick. Cuts through painted aluminum nicely. There are 2 bolts holding it down so plenty of pressure.

    PWM Mod

The ram sink near the bottom of the card interferes with a heatpipe, therefore, I had to mod it (cut a couple of the fins off and rotated 90 degrees) so that it would clear the S1:

    Ram Sink mod

The next pic shows the modified ram sink installed. I had some good double-sided thermal tape and did away with those gooey original pads. Much cleaner and should transfer heat much better:

    Mod ram sink installed

    All sinks in place now:

    Sinks installed

S1 mounted with no ram sink interference:

    Good clearance

The S1 is now mounted with a thin layer of MX2 on the gpu. The PWM area sink has plenty of clearance.

    PWM sink clearance

Finished mount with Crossfire bridge poking through. I did need to spread the fins to get the bridge through. (photo is old one with old gooey pads on sink, but main focus here is to show dimensions of sink.) Thickness is nearly the same as any double slotted HSF, and height of 1+7/8 inches from the edge of the card. About 3/4" to 1" from the side door of my Antec 900. Length shorter than card.

    Mounted S1

Finally installed on Abit IP-35 Pro. An additional S1 Rev. 2 will arrive today to finish the job, along with a new P5Q-E!

    Installed

Edit: I installed my Rev. 2 and happy to report a similar installation as Rev. 1.
