Watercooling HD4870, MP-01

I went with an AquaExtreme MP-01 since Jab-tech had them on clearance for $36+. In the past I had an MCW-60, I just hate spending $40 then another $10 for chrome barbs (I hate plastic ones). Installation was easy on the HD4870, no issues with the shim on the HD4870, the MP-01 fit and made perfect contact with the core. I added mosfet sinks and ram sinks and have a few low speed yates blowing over the card. DDR5 does get hot and even though I can run them at 1100 (4400Mhz effective), there is enough memory bandwidth already and the extra speed equates to more heat and little performance so I've been keeping the ram about 980 - 1000mhz.

Idle runs about 32deg c load has never broken 40c yet. Big difference from 60c idle and high 80s loaded with the stock cooler. Using the TT Duo Orb idle was in the mid 40s, load in the low 70's.

nice, where are the low speed yates blowing over the card? I have the same style case and an MCW60 and im always plagued with extremely hot ramsinks.. looking for a nice way to mount a fan over the ram but I can't seem to figure it out..

I've got two yates cable tied together and velcro that holds them in place - it blows over the ram, GPU and pushes hot air out the back. Works great have been using it like this for awhile. The pics above were with the case on my counter hooked up to my spare PSU bleeding and leak testing so the fans werent back in yet. This is a pic with my GTX in there (older pic) but you can see the fans installed here with velcro for easy removal.

Off topic, but what OS are you running? I am assuming XP 32-bit. I am running Vista64 and Catalyst control center doesnt work. A known issue without a fix supposedly.

Vista 64 and CCC aren't incompatible. I'm using it now.

32 idle, 39 max load. Hasnt broken 40 yet.

Using XP32 on one HD and Vista 64 on the other, I bounce back and forth. Using Vista 8.6 hotfix on both OSes, no issues with CCC, its fast and always comes up.

You can remove the red backing plate and remount that, then just pop a waterblock on like the 2900XTs.

Yeah, so i hear! I am getting .NET errors saying it could not change registry because of privileges. I am administrator, and have all .NETs installed. Im running Vista 64 Business so I am not sure if its my version or something. Its a fresh install, but Ive installed available updates. Video drivers work fine, its just CCC.

I can open CCC after the errors, but it doesnt display a graphics adapter to change settings for. Whereas some people cant even get CCC to open. The only reason I really need CCC is overdrive, and the fan fix.

With my water loop. My 4870 idles at 30C. When I load my CPU and GPU at the same time, my max temp is 37C. Mine is currently clocked at 790/1000. Links in sig

you need to install the .net framework 2.0 before you install your drivers. i got my installer from my mobo manf. website (dfi) but yeah you installl that then re-install your vga drivers and you should be all set

That's a pretty neat block. As much as I like the MCW60, there is no way I would use the plastic barbs.

I own a HD4850, yeah it's fit well with zalman ZM-GW3. HD4870 board design's different with HD3850-HD3870-HD4850, that's why I cant use my old water block from zalman for it.

I ask as I bought mine AGES and AGES ago, before the X1000s and 2900s appeared, so I am unsure whether there was a second revision or such to allow mounting on those cards, or whether it needed it. Anyone know? I wouldn't mind recycling my block for a HD4870 myself. Although I would like to know how the D-Tek Fuzion GFX2 performs anyway.

you don't have to install any .net under vista

just install the driver reboot and done, no extra .net needed (i had some issues when i first tried the ati driver, however a system restore and reinstall fixed it!)

make sure to restart immediatly after driver inst, i always had problems in vista when i didn't restart after a driver install while i was able to install all drivers in one restart on xp...

Oh cool, means it the 4870 uses the standard mounting holes, meaning if I get one (if budget allows ) I shouldn't need anything extra to mount my MCW60 on there Although, I'll have to buy more sinks for the top of the card and cool those...fullcover block is tempting that's for sure but that's another $100-ish. Ehh.

MCW60 will fit with stock bracket. Check my post up a few (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...50&postcount=8) with the 2900XT. You can remove the red backplate of the stock cooler, remount just that to contact ram, mosfets, etc and avoid having to buy anything else.

cause it seems so naked... wouldn't there be turbulence around it when it start spinning?

i'm thinking of adding a MCW60 on my HD4870 to my existing loop to.
hope the temp work effect my CPU temp alot.

Those MP-01 blocks are really quite good. I've had one in my rig for the past 2 years and it's cooled my 7800gt, x1900xt, and 8800gt all perfectly.

The only problem with them is that they are restrictive as all hell...

+1 That's encouraging. My 4870 is going underwater soon, i'll prolly use the EK FC block. It'll be interesting to see how temps stack up.
