this thread is about discussion of the HD 4870, not the GTX 280. Im not gona lie here and say that the 4870 stomps the GTX 280 because it doesnt, but the fact of the matter is that the 4870 performs damn well and holds its own right up there against the GTX 280 for a significantly less price. Not to mention the fact that with ATI cards you arent forced to use a god awful nvidia chipset which will wind up lowering your performance in every other aspect of your entire system.
Lol ceevee is trying to convince himself that gtx280 was a good buy
but on the inside he feels ripped off
Q6600
Powercolor Ax6870 1GB
Corsair HX620
WD3200AAKS
MSI p43 neo3
patriot 2gb 800MHz
good buy is in the eye of the beholder, if he purchased the GTX 280 with the intention of getting the MAXIMUM in gpu performance to date, then it was the right purchase, the GTX 280 is on the top. But for a person like myself who doesnt have assloads of cash to throw in every direction, but wants excellent performance, thats where the 4870 will come in, and thats where the majority of the market is for graphics cards, and THAT, is going to hurt nvidia.
The 4870 must have given Nvidia a big scare because I can't seem to find a gtx260 listed anywhere.![]()

I just don't understand people arguing with numbers...
If you're a gamer up to 22": 4850 or a 9800gtx (although 4850 is a better pick once you turn on AA)
If you're a gamer above 22": 4870
If you're a bencher: gtx280, 3xgtx280, 4x4870, etc.
If you're a Crysis gamer: ebay it, it's a crappy game anyway. Arguing if a card plays it at Xfps or at Yfps is ridiculous. It's unplayable on any card at proper IQ settings (don't tell me you're OK with High knowing there's a Very High). You can spend $1300 on 2 gtx280 but it's $1300 to play only one game.
Murray Walker: "And there are flames coming from the back of Prost's McLaren as he enters the Swimming Pool."
James Hunt: "Well, that should put them out then."
do u realize that NV has all illegal scores on 3dmark rite now sine it uses the agea CUDA in the driver and breaks like 5 rules so u have 2-3k more than u should with 3 cards, all ur doing is arguing a moot point , u would be strapped to a glitched platform just for 1000+W of power draw on grafix and terrible IQ and $3200 for MB and grafix
5930k, R5E, samsung 8GBx4 d-die, vega 56, wd gold 8TB, wd 4TB red, 2TB raid1 wd blue 5400
samsung 840 evo 500GB, HP EX 1TB NVME , CM690II, swiftech h220, corsair 750hxi
unfortunately what cevee doesn't realize is that the gt200 core is OVER TWO TIMES LARGER than the RV770 and it still cant manage to beat it by 15%
now i would like you to look at the IQ review from anand (here is the link incase you cant manage to find it: andandtech IQ compare)
look at the bottom row (row 12) and compare the highest quality available AA settings between the two cards...
yeah thats what i thought, you can't deny it, the RV770 IQ, flat out destroys the gt200 IQ
so next time you go trying to make ridiculous irrational statements on XS maybe you should think twice about your dignity

of course vanage mark doesnt mean a whole lot not to mention nv's new driver gives gtx 200's many more points in the CPU test , the physx one i think ... real game test shows that GTX 280 is winning, but not by a whole given that it is $650 vs $299 of 4870 MSRP (we'll see how etailers price it)
also not to mention that tweaktown's result were obtain with oced GTX 280 @ 7001300/2300

well .. on what cpu ... at least twaektown's test were done with the same cpu @ the same frequency also is that x15310 tri sli?? i mean u cant compare results with differen gfx card with different cpu, at least make the cpu the same, RAM the same, then its more comparable

That was a phase run at 4800Mhz, QX9770 with 172Mhz more on the shaders and 146Mhz on the ram. How the hell are those lower clocks?Dude, seriously, think before you post such BS and claiming their results were "fixed".
Post the full picture also, why did you cut out the CPUZ window eh?

Ceevee, you are getting annoying, go make ur own thread if you want a tip to get more score in Vantage, JEEZ!
Even a baby knows that GTX 280 is the fastest card, BUT 4870 being $299 gives great performance and the performance are not far behind the 280, there*******fore 4870 IS the best bang for the bucks. And im not blind, the IQ comparison on AnandTech clearly tells me that ATI IQ is better at color, texture an the AA itself.

didnt realize that was a P score and not an X score when i posted. I m not super familiar with Vantage as of yet. But looking into it, it seems any 200 series nvidia score would be inflated due to physX and not translate into real world performance in games, so if performance crown is only judged by highest vantage score, then for the moment nvidia does have it, at quite a cost, but as for relevance, i think their share price and panic reflects the real situation with what ati has come to the table with.
