I think a 74gb 10k HDD thats priced at $75 would be a HUGE hit. But would WD do something like this? I know Id have no problem picking up 4 of them for raid 0 setups in both my pc's

So with the 300gb being $300, and the old 150gb being in the $150~ range sometimes, that does sound like a reasonable price, tho Id imagine closer to $100 per drive.

So have anyone more news on the European release? Man! I just ordered one of their black caviar 750GB to put my XP on a dual boot machine.

750 GB for OS drive is more or less insane.

There has been no release whatsoever for any of the lower capacity models. The 300GB models are widely available though wherever I look, I just checked 5 stores and they all had quite a couple in stock, one even had more than 100 in stock.

opps! I looked at the wrong field when I checked the usage on my drive! (note to self; triple check info when drinking).
Currently using about 60GB for the games that are installed. I have a lot of maps for the Unreal games.

And BTW, my torrents are on my Mac.

But there probably won't be such a raptor, WD has already said somewhere that they have looked into drives with such a high RPM, but vibrations were too much of an issue to make such drive a reality. It might be possible if you mount the drive between some springs, but then you will for sure not be able to put it in a notebook . Or maybe this will not eliminate the kind of vibrations that WD was referring to.

When the 300GB VR first game to light, people kept referring to it with the wrong model number. Even though the model number has a "150" in it. As such this is a review of the 300GB model, and an extremely nice review at that.

I guess WD thought that the nVidia format of stupid and confusing product names was a good idea.

Probably refers to the 150GB platter size.

I'll restate what I said in another thread when TR reviewed the VR ES.... any test that puts Seagate Baracuda over a Raptor is a time lost in my book. I have the Baracudas, 7200.10, .11, both regular and ES - all freakin' crap compared to Raptors! There's no way those drives would be faster than Raptor in any equal-opportunity scenario. (read: either the chipset hates Raptors, something else hates Raptors, or they didn't defrag the drives).

    Hunh..?

SSD have come down in price considerably, it is completly pracicle to purchase a SSD for your OS & virtual memory partitions. You can grab a 30GB internal SATA SSD for about $270 bucks.

No raptor on the planet going to match the performance of an SSD. So I don't quite understand your point?

Yeah, how about the only 40MB/s writes?

I think you're placing too much value in that spec. Systems just don't stutter or bog down when waiting to write to the disk. Though, you do notice the hiccups, stuttering and slowness when waiting for information.

How long ago was it when HDs had 40MB/s writes..?

Solid State Drives are the future and they are her now. Just like when the first Raptors came out and were super expensive.

So when I'm installing a game or large program and it takes 15 minutes versus 7 on a Raptor, what then? SSDs are the future, but they're not the best at everything. Just sayin'.

There are SSDs that are truly the best at everything, but you unfortunately also pay for that. I do agree that SSDs are the future, that future is only taking some time to get here.

Check a few reviews - then come back.
There's no SSD that beats a Raptor acorss the board, or even in >75% of the cases, yet.
You may think reads are everything or more important, but the thing is Windows ain't that smart - it will write whenever it feels like it That single write in between the reads is enough to cause the reads to slow down as well.
And almost all SSDs are actually even slower write-IOPS wise than Raptors. MemoRight seems to be doing well in this field, but unfortunately, I didn't see any complete review of MR SSDs, only a few HDTach/Tune/Atto_crap benches...

A 150Gb Veloraptor would be pretty sexy, I can definitely see myself buying one, when/if it hits the streets.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure this one will in the kind of uses we put them through:
