in a few weeks? possibly! maybe never tri-SLI GTX280's but you can get awfully close for half the price

can you believe it? this thread got more than 220,000 views!!!
The results in the French review are remarkable. 200$ card outperforms 9800GTX and 8800Utra in 90% of the games with AA and in the half of them is equal with no aa... If we still believe in the 30% gap between the 4850 and 4870, I think we can get very very close if not equal results to GTX280 from 4870...

Tweaktown says RV770 NDA pushed up to 9 AM Thursday:
http://www.tweaktown.com/news/9700/a...ere/index.html
BTW 220,000 views... wowAMD has timed its latest 8.6 Catalyst drivers to be released just prior to the launch of RV770 (which we've just heard has been pushed forward to a mere 10 hours away from now - expect our first article online right on the nda lift, and with more to follow soon after).
The NDA ends tomorrow?!? Wow, I'm sure as soon as it ends, a plethora of content regarding the HD4000 series that had been written prior to NDA being lifted will spill out onto the internet! I can't wait!

hmm I do not understand the extreme level of amd hype here.
comparing apples to apples, will two 4870s in crossfire beat two 280 GTXs in SLI?
I seriously doubt it. so what is the big deal?

Heh, I've been browsing the 9800GTX prices on Ncix.com, lately I've noticed, the majority of them almost have a $100 instant rebate.

AMD hasn't given up on having the performance crown. They talked about being successful without it because they didn't have anything on the top rung.
You can bet that if they get it back, they will certainly let everyone know. But they do have a good strategy IMO, smaller die parts, lower power and modular. A giant die can only get you so far, sooner or later the same performance wall that single core CPU's ran into will be a factor.

I think this will only be true if you want to run a crappy NV chipset.
I don't know how many people I've seen sworn off of NV chipsets after the numerous problems they have had.
For Intel platforms, it's very clear what the most powerful combo will be!... 4870x2 CF will be untouchable on Intel.
So, if you want the most powerful and stable gaming rig, Intel/ATI will own the crown!

Exactly. As tempting as SLI is....i dont fancy a crappy chipset, so i'm going x-fire and selling my trusted 8800GT...its a damn good card, but its time to be a little more xtreme![]()

I refuse to participate in any debate with creationists because doing so would give them the "oxygen of respectability" that they want.
Creationists don't mind being beaten in an argument. What matters to them is that I give them recognition by bothering to argue with them in public.
Aint 4870 not 399$?
Plus the everanoying CF issues. Sometimes you have singlecrad performance, sometimes 10% more, sometimes 50% more etc.
The Racedriver GRID shows it perfectly. Performance is all over the place...pray and roll the random dice.
All this is true for SLI aswell, just in case some fanboys are close to explode in this hyped thread.
Crunching for Comrades and the Common good of the People.
