For what reason? Need a better heating element (radiator) in your room? Better multi-monitor support? I have a feeling they won't be working along with any of these 48x0s in CFX....the performance difference between the 38x0 and 48x0 is just to big to do that.
Don't the cores have to be the same variant to do that? Similar limitation as SLI i thought, ie you can crossfire a 3850 and a 3870 but not a 2900 and a 3870. Are the 48XX's going to be the same core as 3000 series?

them why can you have a 2900xt and 3870 in crossfire.

Its because the 2900xt and 3870 are the same card, only real difference is the memory controller, other than that the 3870 is a die shrink with a few more features

Inintial testing met with no success. The 4850 would disable itself and the driver wont load. I'll try once more with newer drivers found on ASUS ftp (8.503 as opposed to 8.500 found on driver CD that came with the card).
