I tried what you said to do, word for word. All went well, really well untill the final part. After i loaded bios 1303 and saved and the pc reboot i made it to the republic of gamers screen and got hit with a freeze. the poster said "usb init". i powered off and got hit again same spot with "det dram". And once again it frooze but didnt even make it to the republic of gamers screen. it made it to the screen prior to that that shows the nvidia vga bios info. poster said "vga bios". Like b4 it seems to like to randomlly freeze. i believe the only reason i made it to bios the first time and then managed to update the bios was cause the pc had been sitting for 2 days. Seems to like a cold start for some reason. When i do let it sit a while i can make it to windows, and then it will freeze. The CPU is on max. So it's cool as a cucumber. Which is common in this case. I have always had really good temps. Not like a have a chance to read them lately but the rig dont stay up long enough to get warm.

At this point, the only thing I can say is that in my experience, I've only seen ram have erratic effects like you are seeing. In this case though, it could also be the nb over heating. Have you pulled the heatpipe assembly off and looked at it and the chips? My first board, they only had this hard gray compound which didn't seem to be at all effective. It was hard and dry and I had to scrape it off and replace it with as5 to get decent temps.. The heatpipe assembly is easy to get off. A pair of pliers and a philips screwdriver are all you need to get it off.

Lastly, can you take it in to where you bought it and have them test it? If that's possible, I'd say go for it. They will at least give a second try with totally different hardware.

I believed i ruled out the ram. But i will try it again in a few mins. one stick at a time. I really hope it is the ram cause it would be a easy fix. And i can't take it in, i got it from newegg along with everything else. Which sucks cause i have to deal with each and every vender if stuff goes wrong. I should have some answers on the ram in 30mins. Thanks

As far as the NB goes. It worked flawless for months. Why mess up now? But I'm new to the bulding rigs thing.

It's been a interesting 2 hours. I believe i had found the issue. Trying 1 stick of ram at a time, like i did once b4 i got interesting results. 2 sticks would freeze stuff really fast. 2 other sticks seemed to work great on there own. I didnt run them for hours. But maybe 10-15 mins each and i was having no trouble in vista. I also had a idea and check the performance monitor in vista to check the memory. It has this thing it tracks called memory hard faults. the 2 bad sticks never made it to vista. but the other 2 sticks made it and had no errors while doing nothing a just a little when i was opening and closing programs. Now long ago i looked at this hard fault thing and it would get hard faults all over the place. But i still was running smooth. I searched google for hard faults and got nothing. So the importance of this feature i'm not sure. Anyway when i put both good sticks in and fired it up things went well for 20 mins and then it froze, and froze a few more times. So it could be the memory. Maybe 2 sticks are far worse then the other 2. If you believe this is a memory issue i will get new ram. Not crucial, i've heard bad things after i got them. I was thinking about these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227289. But any suggestions would help. I'm hoping it is the ram cause this would be easy to fix.

What is the crucial ram you have? PC6400 or PC8500? I won't say this is absolute, but for the most part this board doesn't like PC8500 for some reason. Go with either 6400 or 9600. I got that info from a tech that services these all the time.

8500...... i should mention i've never been able to get them to 1066mhz, only 800. seems to be hard to do with this board. So you would agree it's the ram that is the issue?

9600 memory is to costly. So if ram is my problem these are what i am looking at. Which one might be best?

What are you using your PC for?

What about a couple of these now, a couple later?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220282

These are what I run, and I have been very happy with their performance.

Try find other DDRII RAM that can offer this...

Use the pc for gaming and hi-def movie viewing moslty. So you think the ram is the issue? I'd be so glad to know what the issue actually is.

I should mention stock speeds are enough for now. I would just be glad to have something that works. Plus i got a bit to learn about overclocking and voltage and stuff.

Update: Still happy here. Just replaced my 4gb OCZ with 8gb Gskill changing the timings from 4-4-4 to 5-5-5 and added the 3rd 9800gtx. This board still rocks for me fully loaded on air. 4.2ghz, 8gb and Tri-SLI all on air crammed in an Antec 900. Idle temps- CPU 40c, MCP 68c, Video Cards (fans on 88%) 47 50 and 45. Hours of Age of Conan on high settings the GPU's hit 58-64 and real temp shows max temp core 1 at 63 and core 2 at 56. gg asus

I haven`t hit any probs with my Ballistix Tracers(8500`s). They seem to be prforming quite well.
@ Hor$eman, Did u have to break fins from stock NB cooler or, is is a separate from the copper plate in ur pic?

I've gotten to 1200, but with this board, there's a point where bandwidth drops out and latency increases. It works different with each clock speed. The secret is trying to find combinations that give the best results.

Since I have two boards (bent pins in one - dunno if I can RMA it for that or if it is worth it), Therefore I have one complete set of heatpipes which are good. The other set I took the whole thing apart.

The NB plate is kind of useless to me as it has two thicknesses. The SB plate I was able to put to good use. I was thinking about taking the SB plate in to a machine shop and having them make me one thicker, which I could also do with the NB plate, I guess, but my temps are so nice now I really don't want to mess with it.

    Question About Ram

SLI ram - Is it better? And whats the difference.

2gig sticks vrs. 1 gig sticks. Putting 4 gigs of new ram in. To hopefully solve my issues. I have 1 gig sticks now. When they worked the pc worked fast as heck. I'm not about overclocking, at least not yet. And when i do it will be a modest CPU push. I'd rather have tight reliable ram.

SLI certified ram is ram that is supposed to work better in SLI boards and able to overclock over 800 MHz. I wouldn't worry about it if you get a higher rated ram. Anyone have a different opinion?

    Found these Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...X4096-8500C5DF

Corsair has actually tested them in the Striker 2. So far the only Ram company I've found that has a test report for the Striker 2.

    The Report http://www.corsair.com/testreports/r...65&m_id=456541

Seems good to me. My System specs are alot better. So it should work well, one would hope. I like that they actualy got them running at 1066mhz. This should mean i can to, with the same settings? So should i go with these or perhaps something else. I've had thought about just going with other 800mhz sets.

Looks like a fair deal, and good ram. I'd only hate to see you spend the cash and then find they don't work, at which time you will have two sets of ram and a motherboard to RMA...

Can you put one good stick in and memtest it? at a time? Prior to running memtest, boot to bios and check nb, sb, and cpu temps, and then after running memtest? What is your cpu temp in windows?
