Prime was stable at 1.41-1.43v, but gaming seems to need a touch more at PL6. I also run PLL at 1.50v and FSBT at 1.10. I don't know if these 2 settings are responsible for my headaches with the tighter timings, but they certainly don't keep me from finding stability at 7-7-7-20.

I have the EB Platinum 4gb OCZ memory, and have had terrible luck with it. I cannot run it at 7-6-6-24 as it is rated. I am forced to run 7-7-7-20. I can't even get the kit to run 7-7-6-24 without Memtest errors. I have RMA'd two kits already.

I am nearly ready to give up on this memory as it will not even overclock by even 5mhz at 7-7-7-20 timings. The folks at OCZ keep suggesting that I play with clock skews to get the memory stable, but I have not seen any improvement when I sried MANY MANY different combinations of skew. I tried both delay, and advancing the skew. No difference.

Thanks again, and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you give us your exact settings that worked stable ???

THANX

Sure,

Please forgive my laziness for the moment as I cannot go into the bios while I type this.

FSB 400
Strap 400
Mem 1600mhz
Timings set to 7-7-7-20
Row refresh manually set to 72 (auto is 88)
Read/Write: Disabled
Clock twister : Auto
Transaction booster: Manual
Perf Level:6
All other mem sub timings set to AUTO
CPU 1.232v (load) 1.256v (Idle)
Loadline calibration AUTO
VDIMM: 1.88 (could probably go lower, but have not tested this yet)
NB 1.45
ALL SKEWS, GTL's set to AUTO
SB Auto
CPU PLL 1.5
FSBT 1.10

Hope this helps someone. I am still trying to get a kit that will run at 7-6-6-24, but no luck yet. My last kit ran at 7-6-6-24, but a stick went bad after a few weeks at 1.94v. Cant believe that VDIMM could have caused it, but who knows. At least OCZ stands behind their product.

Clock skew

Hey guys/gals, adjusting clock skew did help my stability. I have channel A advance 150 and channel B delay 250. Problem is I don't know if these are the best skew settings. What I attempted was to put 1 memory module into channel A and turn up the frequency until I got memtest errors. Problem is that this board is so PICKY. I turned down CPU multiplier in order to try to isolate the ram. I could get FSB up to 485 but no higher. It seems that everytime I adjust a setting that the mobo doesn't like it will not post and then I have to do a hard reset and then memory defaults to 1333 and I get an overclock error (major pain in the A$$). I then tried with 2 modules in order to try to tweak channel A and B. I got a bunch of errors with 2 modules unless I disabled DRAM static read and DRAM dynamic write but I ran into the same problem as I dialed things up. I then left them enabled and thought I would go the other way, lowering DRAM frequency until errors disappeared. But low and behold again I hit a wall where the board would not post again. I then tried all 4 sticks and got no errors with DRAM static read and DRAM dynamic write on auto all the way up to 1940 MHz. I even turned the voltage down to around 1.84 and couldn't believe that memtest still ran error free (only went once thru 5th test however - longer may have made a difference)

So bottem line is that clock skew seems to make a difference. Prime95 was stable but system would crash until I adjusted clock skew. I would be interested if anyone else has tried to dial in their clock skew. I would assume it would be similar among the boards but may not be exactly the same. If anyone accomplishes this I would appreciated it if you could let us know what the optimal skew is for channel A and channel B on your board. I suspect that I am limited because of an extremely picky board in addition to a quad core. A suspect a dual core would be able to do it much easier.

Other question is---How can I (What is the best way) to induce errors in memtest in order to dial in the clock skew? <can you believe that I am actually asking for memtest errors?> I tried tightening the timings but again the board wouldn't post. I tried progressivly lowereing DRAM voltage and this just made memtest run hit or miss. It would just lock up after a short amount of time even though no memtest errors had appeared. Tony, perhaps you could help me out here. Thanks.

what you are saying is very interresting , might explain why I now need some more volts to get rig stable in comparison with my P5K blackpearl

here is a brief shot taken from bit-tech.net related to skew settings

Next, it's strongly suggested that you also play with the clock skews – we know MSI and Asus will have these on their P45 boards, Asus has them on its current X38 and X48 boards, while both DFI and Gigabyte also have them on their X48 boards. Basically as the data has to jump from the front side bus domain to the memory domain this window becomes smaller and prone to more jitter, the faster you increase either the front side bus or memory frequencies and timings. By adjusting the skew you can realign these clock signals and suddenly stability should return again – a good board will have less jitter in its signal generation and finer skew adjustments than one that's not as good.

My P5E3 Premium went out this morning, so I can no longer give viable advise to you guys. With that said, I'm cancelling my subscription to this thread. If you need to ask me anything about this board, the RAM I currently own [OCZ DDR3-1800 Platinum], the Q9450 or any settings I used while I owned the P5E3 Premium please feel free to PM me. Good luck with this board guys.

Are you going to RMA it or not? It seems (according to your statement) like you are completely cutting yourself off any connection with this board.

You are correct. I already RMAed it twice and received defective boards. This time was a return; it allowed me to pick up the Foxconn BlackOps [which has already replaced the P5E3 Premium in my signature]. The 3rd time was the charm for me.

Telo, let us know how you fair with your new board and your ram. If it is a bandwidth issue due to your quad and 4GB ram you will find out soon. Good luck.

Thanks for the sentiment. I didn't cancel the subscription to this thread as I thought I would. Instead I think it is only fair I keep an eye on what transpires with the P5E3 Premium that I like so much once; and also to keep you, guys with the OCZ DDR3-1800 Plats, informed and let you know if there is hope in making the jump to another board.

I dont' have Q9450 but I'm using x3350...

last nite I did some overclocking and this is what I achieved...

Specs:

Intel Quad X3350 Watercooled
Asus P5E3 Premium 0402 bios
2Gb Crucial Ballistix PC1600 CL8
Gecube HD 3870 Watercooled
1TB WD Harddisk
PC Power & Cooling 750watt Red
Windows XP Sp2

for a side note, my last attempt on the same setup max out for super PI 1m run @ 473x8 (3.784ghz)

max 3dmark06 run:
475x8, ram @ 1520 CL6, 3870 @ 891/1296

max Super PI 1m run:
481x8, ram @ 1924 CL8

i believe I could go higher if only I wasnt so sleepy. The voltages that I used still got some headrooms before they reach the dangerous point..

Is anyone else having problems with the 266mhz strap with the 0401 bios?

266 was fine on the shipped bios I got, but no boot on 0401.

266 is also a no-boot with 0401 0402.
Only worked at fsb 333 as far as I can tell.

What worries me most is the performance issues the board has with 9800 GX2 cards. Performance drops significantly on same particular tests (nature in 3dmark01 or canyon flight in 3dmark06).
Just curious any ppl in there using crossfire or HD3870x2 ?

You can find all of my old settings on the Q9450 thread. I didn't get much out of the setup though, just 1600 FSB/RAM, and 1800FSB with RAM running at 1350mhz [this board refused to run my particular RAM in 4 slot setup passed 1600Mhz].].

Me Again,

This is what I've got running 100% stable (To Me).

Prime 95 ran 6 hours with no errors. Everest tests - no errors.

Here we go 9*435 - 3.92, 1740mhz w/1.3625v on cpu (set in bios 0402), 8,8,8,16 2t ram timings, 2 - Sapphire HD3870 in Crossfire (Thinking about 2 - ATI HD3870x2 running CrossfireX) GPU@845mhz & 1236mhrz memory. Everything else is set to auto.

ASUS PC Probe reports tcase idle@30-31 & load@55-57. It also reports MOBO (Question location, assuming NB) idle@32-33 & load@38-39

RealTemp reports TJmax (temp distance left on cores till 95), idle@55-60 & load@37-41.

ATI CCC reports idle @40-42 & load@58 (upper), load @55-56 (lower). 3DMark06 - 19732

Sorry about no pics, but i don't know how to get a screenshot of everything on desktop. Sorry about that.

Well, I'm one step closer to 4.0 & 2000mhz, w/3DMark06 over 20000.

Hope this helps.

P.S. - This all being done on air with Noctua case fans & thier NH-C12P heatsink & supplied paste (At some point I will probably lap CPU & Cooler, just waiting for the price to come down. Knowing me I'd screw it up :O ).

Please, give us also your rest voltage settings... THANK YOU

Myself, I'm trying to reach a stable system but so far with no success...

Putting PLL voltage to 1.70 gave me stable memtest86+ ... BUT Vista Ult x64 could not start (on "Welcome" screen.. system rebooted).

Now I'm using my 4x1GB 1800Mhz cellshock at 7-7-7-20-1T with super_pi_mod-1.5 ok and games playing with no craches. Memtest and Prime95 keep giving me errors...

The only voltage I have changed was CPU - everything else is set to auto.

Figure on getting to 4.0+stable first & then playing with my voltages.

Hope that helped.

My first results

[URL=http://g.imageshack.us/g.php?h=76&i=firstresultshu5.jpg][IMG]

I am happy that the corsairs run at their rated speeds without any hassel.
On the other hand i am having trouble running them at higher speeds.
The read speed speed is a bit to low for what i had hoped for.

Bios Voltages

CPU 1.300
DDR 1.900
NB 1.290

Have the rest on auto still. Have to read up for before i know what i am doing.
I can run my CPU at 3400 with fsb425 and ddr at 900Mhz but i have to loosen the timings but then the results are worse then i posted above.
450 fsb no go.
I think this setup can do better but still dont know how.

What voltages should i change to get 425 to 450 stable and gaining on memory performance?

Sorry for the bad post have no time,...

That is actually a very nice everest memory score. I cannot run my OCZ ram any tighter than 7-7-7-20-2T

Obviously, my scores are a little behind yours. This has me thinking about Corsair ram now. Is your system 100% stable with those settings? How much VDimm did it take to get those sticks to run those timings? What about NB Voltage?

Thanks,

Sean

1.30v is a lot to get that CPu to 3.2Ghz; I was able to get to 3.2Ghz stable with 1.20v using that same board. Also, if you want to tighten your timings you might need to raise your NB voltage, I had mine at 1.35v to run my OCZs @ 7-6-6-18 2T 1600Mhz.

A lot of people using Corsair [Dominator kind] can get to 450FSB. I do not have Dominators so I was only able to get 450FSB while using a 5:8 divider for the RAM to lower it to 1350Mhz [OCZ is not fully supported passed 1333Mhz].

I've got this memory here ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227297 ) arriving Monday, any advice on memory settings I should use? Been using Corsair 1333C9 from the start but decided to jump on the 1600 to see how fast my system can go.

GTL Timings?

Has anyone had any success playing with the GTL timings for the QX9650, or other 45nm Quad-core? It has not helped me, but then again, I have been unable to advance my RAM beyond 400MHz. Maybe it is because I used 2GB sticks, or because the RAM was cheap?

FWIW, here's my BIOS setup (402, although 401 and 254 worked fine for me too):
• CPU Ratio: 10
• FSB Strap: 400
• FSB FReq: 400
• PCIE Freq: 100
• DRAM Freq: 1600
• DRAM Command Rate: 2N
• DRAM CMD/CLK Skew A/B: Auto
• CAS Latency: 7
• RAS to CAS Delay: 7
• RAS Precharge Time: 7
• RAS Activate to Precharge Time: 21
• DRAM Static Read Control: Disabled
• DRAM Dynamic Write Control: Disabled
• Clock Twister: Stronger
• Transaction Booster: 6
• Channel A/B PH1/2 Pullin: Disabled
• CPU Voltage: 1.3625
• CPU GTL (0/2): 0.63
• CPU GTL (1/3): 0.67
• CPU PLL: 1.5
• FSB Termination: 1.1
• DRAM Voltage: 1.8
• NorthBridge (VMCH): 1.31
• NB GTL Reference: 0.67
• SouthBridge: 1.05
• Clock Over-Charging: 0.8
• Load-Line Calibration: Performance (Setting to "Normal" requires CPU V=1.425 !!!)
• CPU Spread Spectrum: Disabled
• PCIE Spread Spectrum: Auto

I changed several of the options from "Auto" to their default or standard value, just so I would know the exact settings. Most of the above settings fall into that category.

Any advice on how to eek more FSB performance out of the memory? Although I could boot into 410 or 425, I was unable maintain Prime95 for more than a few seconds.

In your sig you say that your RAM is DDR3-1600, does that mean it is 1600 or that you are running it at 1600? Let me make myself a little clearer, my RAM is DDR3-1800 but I used to run it at 1600. That particular board is extremelly picky when it comes to supporting RAM passed 1600Mhz.
