Talking Overdrive 3.0 coming with the SB750 southbridge

    http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/14622

Read that, check out the links on that page, and smile. Apparently the SB750 will add some overclocking headroom to the Phenoms with the Overdrive 3.0 feature. I can't wait to see the DFI 790FX board with the SB750. Things keep looking brighter for AMD day by day.

    The days weren't
as dark as all would have you believe, but I do agree with you. Of course I'm probably gonna wait for AM3 cos I already got an DFI M2R.

Unfortunately there aren't many details on it yet but I also remember reading a long time ago that AMD was doing some "clock generator" change or addition to their next gen south bridges (next gen = SB7xx).

Heres a link to an article explaining the new SB7xx series chipsets. YES, a clock generator and Super I/O are included in the SB750 south bridge: http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-P...ps-77422.shtml

I'm having a hard time understanding how the SB750 can improve Phenom OC's? Don't get me wrong, I hope it does....

The only thing that I can think of is that it improves HTT Link stability.

Anyone have any info on this yet, or an estimated timeline for SB750 availability?

The reports say it has something to do with the integrated clock generator but we'll actually just have to wait and find out. Apparently the original SB600 and 700 boards were lacking in this department. I honestly can wait to find out HOW it works. I just want to know IF it works. If people can pull higher OCs or the same OC with less voltage out of the Phenom then we're in business.

Might the SB600 then indeed be causing those crappy freezes when just doing 24/7 stuff

I don't see how integrating the clock generator will improve overclocks.. if anything its worse because you can't mod it if you wanted to

Also arent there boards out now that use the SB700?

The clockgen in all southbridge chips but the SB750 was deemed faulty - that's the only thing I can think of which may posibly help.

    Im wondering though,

When the SB750 gets released, how would we know it apart from an official announcement? I mean, after all the HT stays the same (I call MB-NB HT, otherwise everything gets a bit messed up). So would motherboard names change then as well?

I really cant wait for the SB750 if that at least fixes this crazy freezing crap. Good thing really it will be after my exams, otherwise my concentration will be below zero again.

The SB750 also adds more RAID options over the SB700. Paired with a 790FX, the motherboards should really be worth their cost (finally). Dammit, I hate waiting to see what improvement Overdrive 3.0 will bring in overclocking. I also hate that I have to wait for OFFICIAL 4870 benchmarks. I hope May will be a big news month for AMD, and I mean GOOD news this time around LOL.

(sorry, I've been reading http://www.engrish.com for the last hour and my grammar is faulty at present)

Hmmm, now I know how I'll end up getting another board. Now I can give the old 9600BE, and k9a2 Plat that I have now to a friend. Been trying to figure out how I'd help him out without having to buy him a new board and ram. Just ordered the 9850BE, and 4gb kit of 1066 ram. today. So I'll have 4gb of g.skill 800, extra. He's currently going to college for computer graphics and video game design. Has to do rendering assignments. If I remember correctly he's currently using either a p4 2ghz or an Athlon XP 1800+. Takes his computer something like 4 hours to complete a render. He'd crap himself with a quad core, probably knock the render times down to what 10 mins?

Thats the ram, just in case I might have to worry about hurting my OC or stability with it.
