Well guys, ive finally been able to sort things out and get my review schedule back on track, the red scorpion review was just posted, it maintained the exact 14 degree temperature drop that the original HDT-S1283 did

I just put the Red Scorpion in my PC which has an overclocked QX9650 in it...with the Zalman 9700NT my temps according to Real Temp 2.41 were about 45c-46c ilde at 3.6ghz with 1.264 vcore.

Now with the Xigmatek, my ilde temps are 41-42c with same 1.264 vcore. I am also giving temps based off of the first boot so the Arctic Silver 5 hasn't cured yet...I think it will eventually settle around 40c idle....it's most certainly a better cooler than the much much more expensive Zalman 9700NT.

Side Note - I am not using the stock Xigmatek fan..I'm using a Scythe 110cfm...the Slipstream fans from Scythe are amazing...100cfm at 37db!

For some reason i can move the true with my hand while installed and i think thats why i have 47~48 idle temps on a Q9450. I want to prove my luck and check if push pins are better x_x'. I tried the ocz vendetta 2 but the pins were of bad quality i just ended up returning it, it pissed me off every time i had to install/uninstall it.

You just need some mod to apply more pressure on your TRUE, or even lap the base.

i lapped my true and aplied more pressure with a spacer it knocked of 5°

But... i shouldnt be getting such temperatures, 46~48 idle? ._. i even applied the artic silver 5 correctly so i dont know whats wrong here. I think ill just blame the thermal sensors inside the processor. This is my second q9450, i had to exchange the first one because it came with 2 non working sensors and i was getting 36 idle with a thermalright xp-90, now with this new q9450 im getting 46 with a true. Im like wtf?

i am pretty sure is the contact issues which imply to pressure.

Don't ever drop an HDT cooler on the floor by accident.
I did, and I had to order a new one.

The heatpipes popped fromt the base and the whole thing twisted, so now it has an uneven base.
70 at load with q6600 at 3.6 FTW...or not.

It's a zigzagtech now. hehe

My new one comes monday so I am going to experiment with getting the base lapped on this one to see if it fixes anything.

I received the replacement red scorpion for the one I dropped.

I used an Aero Cool Extreme Turbine fan. You know the so called 89 cfm one.
I also used the included TIM this time without lapping the heatsink.

All I can say is WOW! At 3.6 ghz running occt, my q6600 never goes above 60c.

Now I know bad things have been said about the fan I used, but it blows away the red scorpion fan by a mile. There is now good airflow blowing through the heatsink. There is definitely way more cfm and air pressure produced by the turbine as opposed to the stock fan for all it's worth.
I have no way of measuring, but I could care less. It's perfect now.

So if you want to make the 1283 even better, swap the fan out with the extreme turbine. It's a way better fan.

The included thermal grease seems to be better with this heatsink than arctic silver too. I don't get it, but it's all good.

Time to see how much higher over 3.8 I can get now that it's not croaking under the heat. It was hitting 70c before. 10c improvement in my book is great.

My room mate got this as I have a TRUE in my system and he hates to copy anything I do. However when he was installing it with at TR bolt thru kit, he made the mistake of not screwing all 4 screws one turn and moving to the next, when we removed the heatsink to check that there was even coverage of the cpu we found a large dent in the shape of a C2D heat spreader corner in one of the heat pipes.

So be warned, when useing a bolt thru to to apply a lot of pressure make sure you screw it down very evenly corner by cross corner or you may ruine the HS due to the softness of the copper heat pipe.

When I find my camera I will post a picture of it dent.

Yep! lol, this also happens with pushpins if one pops out from not seating them all the way. Of course now this is a non-issue for me.

The backplate is the way to go, and yes, tighten the screws evenly, or cry.
That's the downfall of HDT. You can damage the heatpipes if you're not careful.

To me though, it's the best heatsink I have ever owned. Especially with the better fan.

Spawn, thanks for a great review. Do you think it would be a good idea to fill the space between the heat pipes and the aluminum support columns with thermal grease in addition to applying the line method you recommend ? Just to prevent any air from being trapped there.

Interesting article. Notice he did not one attempt line across the heat pipes (perpendicular to the direction of heat pipes). Two drops or two lines always concern me about air being trapped between them as the TIM spreads under the heatsink ?

to answer your question, yes that will always help improve heat transfer, whether it helps temps, i dont know, its a common first mod to do on alot of coolers that have gaps or air spaces along the base or above the base where the heatpipes make contact

84 scales higher because of more pipes, fins, and larger surface area. Dont buy it until revision 2 is released.

my base is coming loose on my 1283. i can now move the base some away from the pipes up or back down i was wondering why i had such bad temps.. then i took it off and put a razor on it and saw only the silver parts between the pipes were actually touching the cpu.. looking for something else now.. not sure ill buy another one of these or not
