My x3350 ran fine at 3.2ghz all stock voltages (VID1.2) with 8GBs of RAM, I haven't stressed it yet but it ran 3Dmark06 and some Pi no problem.

Why would the strap effect overclocking of the CPU though? Do you have a link... because searching for FSB Strap will yield like 2 years worth of content.

Because there is a strap at exactly 450... and at 450, that would loosen things up a bit for the northbridge... thus, you would be able to go further from there until you reach the next strap.

Seems like there's no such thing past 333MHz on my board.

    Edit:

Maximus/Rampage has Strap controls on it, I am just wondering why the board acts like this with a X3350/Q9450. I really thing its a BIOS issue now, the chip seems fine, seems theres a setting holding it back, something thats causing all other voltages to be insanely high?

Wish could get to the bottom of it, but I still havent seen any conclusive evidence. Your board RunawayPrisoner is probably the best clocking I have seen, all the X38/X48 boards with the exception of DFI's UT stuff seems to have the exact same problem.... all crap out at 440FSB, I am really doubting that its the chips doing so too.

Yeah... and I'm getting some stuffs tomorrow by noon. Time to see when 4GHz is finally stable, and then I'll be content. If anyone wants to get the full computer, I'd even sell it, since my real reason for getting this same computer again was to test whether or not the FSB wall was in the chip itself. Seems not. And seems like if you get my board instead, 475 or maybe even above would be quite easy to attain.

P.S.: And yes, there will be pictures tomorrow... for those interested. I only have my cell here, though... so... quality might be bad.

Hmm. now its clear that there is something wrong with motherboard not the processor. Good work ChaosMinionX...

I'll try using 266 strap tonight.

Nice finding ChaosMinionX.... I'll copy those settings and try myself to see if that's the case. If yes, you get free beer I didn't have time last evening since a friend asked me to help her with moving some boxes.

    Ok to make it clear:

Using a 266Mhz FSB Strap you can reach a higher FSB?

    Quick question:
I'm about to buy a X3350 or a Q9450. I've never had a server CPU before. Are there any significant differences (Vcore?, TDP?, better OC,) ? Do I need EEC RAM? Will it run on my X38 Asus MAximus Extreme?

Thank you very much! (I can get an X3350 quite easily, that's why I'm asking)

Both is identical in requirements so you can use the X3350 as if it is a Q9450. The only difference is a obscur feature (I/O AT) only being used by servers and have no impact for desktop use.

before you do that drop the multiplier on the chip so it's not so CPU limited and see if you can make the higher mhz. like 450*7 or something.

I did I can boot windows with 475 after I change the Strap to 266mhz and lower multi, the RAM just cant take the stability. So I am still wondering what needs to be done to get it to boot on 333mhz/400mhz.... Doesnt seem like I should have to run 266mhz just to get the damn thing to boot, I am gonna put a thing into Asus to look at 45nm clocking on Maximus/Rampage and see if they come out with the same problems.

Oh wait, did you try 200MHz/400MHz? Just curious on how that should work.

200mhz is a definite RAM limitation at 450mhz+....400mhz results in a no boot as well, as it pretty much sets the same settings as 333mhz...

I wish I had another quad to test, I might go buy another and see if its chip or more so the board. Runaway you wouldnt wanna sell one of your 3.8ghz chips would ya?

I'll see if this chip can do 4GHz stable on air today. If it can, maybe I'll let the chip go for $400. (What? It's a $400 4GHz 45nm quad!) But if not, $360 shipped. Exactly the price I got the chip for.

Same here. Man, why did I sell my 3.8GHz+ Q6600 G0 and wasted extra on this X3350, I don't know...
