INstalled orthos... extracted to desktop. When I double click on icon a message comes up says "This application has failed to start because WORKER.KLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." Re-installing the app did not help. Any ideas?

Don't extract it to the desktop, extract it in a folder and then run it from there... should work fine

@ Leeghoofd, tried that... put it in my docs. Same problem. Any other suggestions? Would prime95 be just as effective in stress testing? Maybe beta orthos isnt compatible with Vista? Orthos 2004 worked fine.

Orthos.exe and worker.dll should be in the same folder - that's all

Gonna take more voltage than that for Orthos stable.

Can you say "degradation"? It failed after 45 mins. Before @ 1.375v bios it was passing prime95 for hours. I never did Orthos the first time so I dont know if it would have passed then. Now it's 1.381 in bios and failing after 45mins. I will bump up volts in bios and see if it makes it past the 45min mark.

That's not degredation - that's thermal buildup, you're heating up the box and/or the room the machine is in. You'll probably need more volts and/or more cooling.

edit: Meh, fedex missed me at home by about 30 minutes today - I was hoping to get my e8400.

So a question. I just sold my cpu, mb and ram and picked up an EVGA 790i ultra, a set of PC3-10666 OCZ 2x1 GB Platinum

    http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/...out/page8.html

(based on the tom's testing above, apparently its pretty decent mid range DDR3 ram).

For a cpu, I would really like a retail E8500 but can't find one anywhere in canada (Tiger direct has the OEM but it will cost me $380 shipped because they force you to buy a cheapo heatsink as well).

What should reasonable expectations be for a retail box E8400? I'd really like to have 4 ghz for daily use (I have a lapped Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme so temps should be fine).

Is this realistic? I've read through the forums that excessive voltage seems to degrade the E8400 over time (which i don't want to do).

what can I roughly expect on air?

    thanks

^^ well if you've read any of this thread

    You would know!

No really... 4.05ghz or 1800mhz FSB should be easily attainable with your set-up. You really wont put much effort into a 4ghz overclock. I've been having problems at around 45mins of stress testing that I think voltage can fix but I dont see it in any other day to day use. I also was able to boot and complete 3dmark06 at 4.5ghz or 2000mhz fsb. That gave me a killer score too!

I bought mine from tigerdirect for 229.

Thanks for the feedback. there are a couple of local stores here in toronto that are selling them for $230.

If the E8500 retail was out I'd buy it but the latest i heard now was next month.

Maybe unlucky there, what can the CPU do ? Are you 100% sure it's the CPU ?

That may not be the case. It depends on the chip. Mine is orthos stable @ 4.05ghz with just 1.26v and also orthos stable @ 4.3ghz with 1.34v.
