    http://forums.vr-zone.com/showpost.p...9&postcount=45

now this mod makes the mobo detec hit as 1600 FSB 3.2 GHz processor , but does it run any hotter or does it change its multiplier ?

The original page is here (translated from Chinese) coolaler.com

It shouldn't run any hotter... though I haven't tried that myself. But in all sincerity, you should just overclock it to 3.2GHz manually instead... because it needs only 1.14v (real. Loading at 1.12v after droop and drop) to operate at 3.2GHz.

no, but i've read about this somewhere before on a forum..it worked i recall, but in the end it was a fruitless exercise as the penryn's are capable of doing 400x 4 (1600) or better without the mod and yes, potentially it could require more voltage than if you wanted to run stock. now since then, it's been proven often that you can run stock voltages on a q9450 at 8 x 400 24/7 so..either or, really.

I wouldn't say stock volts for 8 x 400 24/7, since that's way overkill... at least from my own experience. Stock clocks can be... undervolted to the extend where it only needs 1.08v to operate stably (you can't go any lower, obviously). 8 x 400 needs only 1.12v, 8 x 450 needs 1.21-1.22v (stock is 1.225v), and 8 x 475 needs 1.30v. Trust me. I tested it.

I heard that mods like this are only good for motherboard without any kind of overclocking options.

I understand that. But if you'd take a look at some setups, you'd see that some motherboards default to 1.2250v for Q9450... whereas the VID is around 1.1000v to 1.1250v.

The price difference is greater than $1100 for the extra mhz on newegg currently. Great mod if it works for a Dell or such if you can't bios overclock the extra mhz...

BTW the xeon x3350 (same as the q9450) retail is $305 free shipping here:

Edit: They mislabeled as both x3320 and x3350 - price there is actually $353.

Q9450 is $299.99 at Microcenter.com... and if you go with ground shipping, it'll be $305 anyway. Overnight shipping at Microcenter is $11, so I think Microcenter offers a better deal.

Looks like a standard BESL mod. The server guys have been doing this for a while, since most server boards don't have overclocking options in the bios.
