But what about the regular 9800GTX (not GX2). Could the 8800GTX Ultra (768MB and 384 bit) potentially outperform a 9800GTX (512MB and 256bit)?

I don't understand why NVIDIA is limiting cards to 512MB if some games will use as many 750MB.

What you were probably looking at was the system RAM being used in regards to Crysis.

And yes it is entirely possible and probably likely that the 8800GTX/Ultra will perform better in the high resolutions because of their larger amount of memory and wider data path.

It was definitely the Video Memory. The physical memory was over 1700. See the screen shot in my post above.

dam striaght....8800gtx smokes it in hi res gaming, its just a better card in my opion period.i mean if the 9800gtx was something amazing it would have been $600,not $340...

read this poll,%95 of ppl here agree the 8800gtx is a better card.

keep in mind that a video card doesn't just fall to pieces when you're using more VRAM than it has. it will begin to swap with your system RAM, which is slower but still works. i think the general rule of thumb is that framerate won't really plummet on a 512 MB video card until you start using 600 MB or more. beyond that point, your framerate will begin to drop dramatically. however, it's still possible that having each video card render every other frame will still keep you rendering faster than a single GTX. if you have a GX2 and each GPU is only rendering 30 fps, you're still getting a total of 60 fps assuming you're running in AFR (Alternate Frame Rendering) mode.
