You'll have to mod it to get either better sound damping or cooling.

It comes with rubber HD mounts and such, but the aluminum isn't insulated in any other way. A coat of paint or a few thin sheets of cheap mcmaster insulation would really go a long way.

It's got pretty irritatingly low airflow, essentially 2x120mm. For such a large case this is relatively little, it gets toasty in there fast.

You can however mod it pretty easily, and it's a pretty sweet case for the price (even if it does take a bit of work). Few minutes with a jig or hole saw, and about $20 worth of fans and paint/insulation... and you've got a pretty badass case.

I'm thinking of either top mounting (cutting a hole in the top w/ a radgrill) or radboxing my mcr220, anyone done this? I havent decided which I want to do.

i'm in the same boat. i can't decide on a configuration. since i only purchased one, i want to do it right. i'm thinking on running two loops, with a radboxed mcr220 on the back, and maybe one on the top as well. i have a 12cm hole saw i haven't used yet :-\

Airflow is easily solved though; a few fans exhaust sucks enough air through the case through all the open airflow holes.

I attached a few shots of the configuration I have now.

Few questions here though, the airflow sucks. I need more air flowing over the 680 socket area... it gets REALLY toasty.

I was thinking I'd add 2 40mm fans where I drew them... it's ugly but it'll work. It'll save me the trouble of hole-sawing as well. There's a TON of room above the board for a radiator or some nice fans, but I'm stumped as to how/where to mount them without modding.

I am planning on radboxing my mcr220 on the back, and putting grommets roughly where i drew the circles.

ANY suggestions for a "tidier" way to improve airflow would be greatly appreciated, I've got until my $170 g92 gts (woot!) gets here on monday to get this figured out. At the moment it'll be: Scythe Kama Bay for more intake, radbox (or a DIY one), and a few 40mms for the rear (maybe 60mm... i gotta measure).

P.S. I know my wiring/tubing job sucks, its temporary. Used long runs so I could reuse the tubing .

It gets toasty in there because your rad is dumping all of its hot air inside the case. Your temps on your CPU, among everything else, would drop if you top mounted your rad and had it exhausting air.

I realize, which is why I want to mount it externally. I'm kind of at a loss for a good mounting spot however for it... the radbox isn't ideal, but it would save me the trouble of modding. If i top mount it, I'll still be dealing with warm air being forced through it. Any external mount I do other than a bottom mount... which isn't really feasable, is going to be pulling "hot" case air over the rad to the outside. It's ridiculously hot in that corner of the case, the airflow is just horrid compared to my 900 (not a fair comparison, I know).

I realize the 40mm fan idea isn't going to do much, but do you have any other ideas?

The cpu loop really isn't dumping THAT much heat, it's only an e6300. It's 100% OC, but its only like 65w stock so its nothing considerable.

The problem really with the heat building up is the chipsets on the 680i, they dump a TON of heat into that area that just kind of floats up to the top and sits there. There's 0 airflow in that top-left corner of the case, so the northbridge and CPU area gets pretty toasty.

I was hoping that adding a bit more airflow would help offset the "damage" that will be done to potential temps by using a radbox. I really don't see a lot of other options here however, short of hitting the top panel with a hole saw.

Any suggestions as to what to do? I realize nothing I've suggested is anywhere near ideal, but I think a kama bay in the drive bays, and an additional fan or two would do wonders here.

start by ripping it all apart again and hiding your cables behind the metal mobo tray.

you have way too much crap crammed in there.

fo get a dremmel with a crap load of cutting wheels and cut the top of the case so you can mount the rad.
you could even mount the water pump up there upside down

do some serious cable management and it will clean it up alot.

Can't run the cables under the tray, there's not enough room. Like i said I just threw it together while I plan stuff, I'll clean it up when it comes time for a final build (new parts arrive).
I kind of wanted to avoid cutting the top, just because the case is brand new. I might just drill pass-thrus for the tubing and mount it on "stilts" (screws w/ nuts).

I realize the watercooling loop and the wiring is bad, which is why I included that little "PS" at the end of the post. It'll change, I just don't wanna bother with the zip-ties and garbage until I know where things are going.

You can intake cool air from the bottom, and exhaust it out the front and after switching the fan on the side thing, exhaust it out the side. Then you can switch the back fan to intake to blow cool air over the motherboard.

I was thinking about doing that, but the feet on this case aren't particularly large.. so it's only going to have a tiny bit of clearance on my desk to suck in air. Running it on carpet would be a no-go, which isn't a deal killer but might pose a problem at LANs. How much clearance do you think I'd need to get reasonable airflow from the bottom up? Also where would I put my pump in this situation? Mounting the rad on the bottom panel would kill that space, so I'd have to mount it up against the mobo panel or something.

it's a brand new cm850w or I would. Its a nice PSU, but the cables aren't particularly long... and it's not modular.

With this case I'll be running AT LEAST 3 cables over the top of the board, because they aren't long enough to go elsewhere.

It doesn't have a side window, so as long as it's not so bad as to restrict airflow, IDC.

well, the modding has started. I dumped a Hdd cage, mounted the remaining one sideways in front of the front intake and I'm going to put an exhaust fan on the bottom. I just need to wait for my 4.75" hole saw from McMaster.

Edit: I agree fuji, the original HDD mounting system was pretty inefficient. Obviously a Frankenstein of parts meant for a different cage. I figure if I ever do get a fourth drive I can just pop it in one of the empty 5" bays.

As for the whole saw... I love me some Dremmel action but I learned my lesson from my current case. Hole saws just seem so much cleaner and I just ordered 3 FilterRight filters for the top intakes. http://www.petrastechshop.com/12blalfanfi.html



That should promote some airflow and keep the case clean, too. Now I just have to figure out how to get a 120.3 rad and a filport in the top and I'm set.

That HDD mounting system is totally stupid. Good idea for a simple mod.

Let me know how the hole-saw thing goes, that might be the route I go.. either top or bottom (or both, one just for airflow).
