How to run high FSB + high vcore with NF7-S?

    Hey there,

As some of you know, my NF7-S can do 260FSB stably (at only 2.0v VDD, mind you ). However, I'm having problems running even 250FSB with 1.9v+. I can POST no problem, but Windows bootup just starts going like MOLASSES. Is CPU voltage unstable or what? I know a lot of people experience this problem, but I don't know of a solution.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I've had that problem many of times, I'm guessing its the ram timings are too high. Now I just find out how high I can clock my CPU at the time, then reload with it overclocked and run FAT32.

    *confused*

I don't think you understand what I am saying. I mean, when I am at 250FSB, I cannot use any vcore over 1.95v or the computer either gets horribly slow or just freezes, and I cannot even boot into Windows.

Hey Duck I noticed that too. Mine won't post 230 @ less than 2v core and 3v on the ram. Very wierd indeed. I'm using the 18's. You think the bios could be causing it? Could very well be the cpu voltage.

I'm not talking about it not POSTing BELOW a voltage... I'm saying when I am at 250FSB, anything ABOVE 1.95v results in an unusably slow windows bootup... I'm using d10, doubt it's the BIOS.

Ahhh, i see what you're saying. That particular problem only happend to me 2x. Cleard right up afterwards. How are your HDD's? Maybe it's failing? I'm grabbin at straws here

Nah, this happens with SATA and PATA drives.

Might be worth a shot to try booting off a floppy... But I doubt that's the problem.

In device manager update the driver for the computer to "Standard PC" instead of "Uniprocessor PC". Reboot and go into bios, there disable APCI..reboot. Windows finds your devices again and you may need to reboot again..

Now, turn up Vcore and boot on 250MHz and a smile wil come on your face

no, u change it o Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) PC.. this will allow u to disable APIC mode (not to be confused with ACPI) in bios.. set it to disabled instead of MPS 1.1 mode..

u might need to reinstall to get the maxmium benefit... it will make 3dmark scores drop by a bit, but then allows u to go higher stability with high vcore... u also lose the extended IRQ

Well, I tried these, and my 3dmark score TANKED. Not good for someone who is currently OCing for the purpose of 3dmarking...

So there is no way around this without tanking my performance?

I've got the same problem you speak of xDUCK. I hope someone can help you out with it as i'm looking for a solution myself.

xDuck what cpu are you using? If it's a tbred maybe a L12 mod can help you
You rather lost me on your first post, if i understand correctly you can boot @ 260 but you can't load into windows? Same thing happens @250
Have you tried lowering the ram timings?

I don't know if it can helps but you can always try to add some heatsinks on the mosfets and southbridge
And do a vdd mod (i'm kididng of course!)

ps can you load into windows? and is stable and fast under it? i mean maybe it takes a long time to boot but if you're patient you can boot

Hehe, this is not a RAM issue. My RAM can do 260FSB just fine. The issue at hand is high fsb & high vcore together...

Anyway, disabling APIC solved it, but now my 3dmark scores have tanked. So I'm back to square 1.

Just my 2cents. I think it's the nf7's onboard power circuitry that is holding you back when running high VCore and high VDimm. It's not very stable at default, so how could it be when run on the edge!
Perhaps some redesigning (soldering in better caps and mosfets; but mainly, caps should be enough imho) could solve that specific problem.

I wonder why disabling APIC would lower 3dmark scores. It simply removes extended IRQ's which I would think would speed things up if anything since the OS doesn't have to do manage anything additional. Guess that's winblows for ya.

    i think it's a bit more complicated than just a few IRQ's

anyway, xDUCK tried a 3.3V rail mod? I assume u already have?

xDuck i'm just curious : do you get those speed with cpu interface enbled? If no, then maybe you should find the highest fsb with the cpu interface enabled. I think it'll help your 3dmark scores

Then you must have some killer bandwidth?
What kind of cpu do u have?

xDUCK what were your 3DMark scores before and what were they after? Did you have to reinstall windows after you disabled APIC?

Didn't have to reinstall Windows, but my 3dmark score was 193xx with APIC off & CPU at 250x10.5, and my score is 198xx with it on at 250x10. So I definately won't be turning that off anytime soon.

My scores dropped from 23xxx about 700 to 800 pts down to 223xxx or so...

Not a very satifying solution, infact. But if anyone 's out there with enough skills and equipment, he could probably try the caps/mosfets change (mosfets is really difficult without doing some damage - did that to repair my beloved board - now no high cpu clocks anymore )...

    It's very likely to help
