9800GX2 is an expensive joke, according to Inq

Lets assume the worst for the 3870X2, call it 13,500 3DMark06, and lets assume the best for the the 9800GX2, with a driver drop and other hacks, say it hits 15K. A little math (15,000/13,500 = 1.111) tells us that it will be about 11% faster than the 3870X2. No problem so far.

The funny part? It is going to retail for $599 US, you read that right, $599. The X2 is at $449, 75% of the price. A bit more math tells us that the price performance (3DMark/$) of the X2 is 30/$ and 25/$ for the GX2. That is one hell of a difference, and it is based on best case assumptions. To put it in different terms, you could get a 3870X2 AND a 3870 for a three way for around the same money.

If Inq is even slightly correct with these numbers, it looks like nvidia is in for some market share loss...

The MSRP has been known for long and since we also knew this was just two G92 cores slapped together, this is anything but news...

Market share loss, from not selling 9800GX2 whereas ATi will be selling 3870X2s??

    No freaking way

In order to rebalance things to 50-50 (now it's 70-30), ATi must get a good 4xxx series, at a good price, defeating nVIDIA in all possible levels, ESPECIALLY in the cards with a $200-$300 price tag.

Most of the info was allready there yes, but to me this is still kinda shocking.
I wonder why nvidia went through with releasing this card... It seems like they desperately want to keep the single slot performance crown, regardless of how much it costs and whether or not they will sell a single piece of this card.

Thing is 9800GX2 is aimed at people who want 1 of the best card on the market or people who want the absolutely best video card setup in which case they'll get more than one. Money is rarely the issue with people who are willing to spend over 400$ for a video card.

If anything is going to kill the sales of the 9800GX2 it's going to be the rumour of the R770 or the GT200. The 30% price increase for a 10% performance increase isn't something that's going to deter people from getting this card. The possibility of spending $400+ on a card that is going to be obsolete in 3 months time after its purchase is.

    Generalizations are, in general, wrong.

ATI will probably drop the price further when the nVidia card hits the streets.

Well in theory, wouldn't people that want the best of the best go for 2* 3870X2?
What kind of people exactly would buy this card?

Since when did 3DMark06 points / $ become the industry standard for GPU price performance? I guess real world gaming performance has no relevance these days...

I don't know why you people even bother with the inquirer. In the last article I've read from them they were calling nvidia Satan. This is no joke, search for it. So why would their opinion over a Nvidia card even matter?

Im so sick of 3dmark scores being used. They are useless.
Having said that i'm no fan of this card, but it will be quick.

Well, act of desperation as ATI likes to call that. Let's just wait for K|np|n to try to beat others(read: ATI) with GX2, I bet it ain't going to happen. 3DMark is already ruled by ATI anyway.

Define real world. Crysis? Crysis my ass. Most people just get these cards for benching, very high-end isn't really for gamers, at least not SLI/CF systems. Sure one of these cards would be nice, but all the hassle with drivers/games just makes these cards useless to average joe. Thus, gaming has to be done with Single-GPU card and w/o SLI/CF to avoid problems. Damn, these "Performance crown!11"-cards are just useless for over 90% of "gamers".

I never judge the value of a video card by its 3D mark score.

How about this one: Saphire 3870X2 for 339 euros. That's including VAT, as dutch stores pretty much have to include the VAT into the price when reporting the advertised price.

The 8800GTS 512MB is a very impressive card indeed, and one of the fastest single chip solutions out there, but let's not turn this thread into a benchmark quotingfest.

The general opinion seems to be that the 3870x2 beats the 8800GTS in games that the crossfire drivers work with.
