To be or not to be?

Well I have a good Q6600 OCed on my rig below and running 4050Mhz (9x450) I wonder if it will be a good change to go to the new Q9450 as I maxed out my q6600 capability.

q6600@4050 or q9450 to try OC on the DFI X38-tr2?

You could get the 9450, see how far it'll take you, if that is unsatisfactory, sell it.

Maxed out your cooling more like. I'd stick with what you've got

Tried a Q9450 and couldn't get it into windows any higher than 3.6ghz on a single stager, retail version maybe better.

But like Cedric said, get one, try it, then sell it on.

Is it FSB wall or CPU limit? I was really hoping C1 would cure the Yorkfields from low FSB wall. Little sense in DDR3 if FSB cannot be maxed out, at least 475 -480.
    My Q6600's can do this, why wouldn't Q9450 ?

I did get it to post at 500x8 but for some reasons I had USB issues so wouldn't load windows. That was on a P35 mobo.

Have a look here for what someone else had tested....

Well thanks for the inputs guys. The thing is I think I will go ahead and get the Q9450 and see where can it go in the DFI LP X38-TR2.

I always like less volts and cool compared to the hot Q6600.

    I feel like if I buy a q6600 with a 1.20v Vid for 300 I could get a q9450 for $49 more...

And as I said my Quad wont go above 450Mhz x 9 in this board thats disappointing. Probably I will have better luck with the new 45nm cpu's and as you got it into 500fsb mark thats not impossible.

i really think the quad core is a niche product right now...

you've already heard more than a handful of people say its a lot more (aggregate) processing power than the majority of applications require.

i myself am trading to a dual core wolfie, losing 2 cores for a large increase in clock, which for me and my gaming scene is more important...

WoW and crysis suck pondwater with a 2.4ghz clock on a 24" monitor powered even by an OC'ed 8800gtx

Yeah I play Crysis with my Q6600 at 4000Mhz and 2 xfired HD3750, but what I'm saying is that this is HOT(55oC) and the MAX I can get out of it.

Isn't the q9450 the next step for me? Wont I be able to run it at 3600 outperforming the q6600 at 4000?

actually about equal at those clocks
    Q6600 @ 3.6, cheap water cooling, and crunching 24/7

I dont think the Q9450 is a worthwhile upgrade from the Q6600 unless the FSB ceiling is raised a LOT.

lower clocks for more money. The cache wont make up for the MHz grunt, not for most multi-threaded apps anyway.

The Q9550 is worse- will equal or slightly surpass the Q6600 in terms of MHz but will cost twice as much

I am telling most people to avoid the common Yorkfields unless they run at stock speeds. I'm saying this as the Kentsfields will easily do 500FSB in a P35 board and respond incredibly well to voltages and cooling. Yorkfields with the low multiplier will max out the chip before you max out the voltage and cooling. With proper cooling you can get a Q6600 up to 4300+Mhz 24/7, that's what mine ran under my single-stage with 1.55v. Sure a Q9450 might do 4GHz on air, but for me, the need for speed is insatiable.

Anyone know when the other Yorkfields will be coming out? It looks like there is some disagreement amongst the elite in here as to what the Q9450 and Q9550 can do ...

I reallyreallyreally want the Yorkfields to be able to reach 500 FSB fairly easily. But it's really not looking like they'll do it for now, so if you have a Q6600 that reaches 4.0Ghz, I'd keep that.

Maybe in 6 months or so, Intel will release a new stepping of the Q9450's which will get 500+ FSB.

I will be going straight from my conroe to yorkfield, but only in the summer when I get a clearer picture of the OC abilities of retail chips in general.

Perhaps, by then, some cherry picked ones will be for sale too
