    GeForce 9800GTX is not a Power-hungry monster

    Testbed:

    ·Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (333MHzX9 Dual core) CPU
    ·Foxconn MARS | EIST and C1E disabled
    ·GeIL Plus+ DDR2-800 3-3-3-8 2.4V(Run:DDR2-800 4-4-4-12) Memory
    ·AVC Napoleon Cooler
    ·Seagate 7200.10 250G HD
    ·Acbel ATX-550CA-AB8FB 550W PSU

I'm probably going to get one...
"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

It isn't a power hungry monster because it isn't much better/different than an G92-GTS

Wow that is very unimpressive. Typically power consumption equates to throughput on an identical node ie 65nm GPU consumes 80w vs 65nm GPU consumes 140w. I'm guessing the bump in clocks is the sole increase in consumption compared to the 8800GTS, that just blows. Seriously needs to be much beefier and get to within 20-30w of the 8800 Ultra's power consumption, that'd equate to a beefy chip, worthy of a new product line.

What was the power consumption of 3870x2 again? 130~ idle/280~ load? I think it was a similar system. Man, I'm seeing more and more reasons to forget about 9800 series.

As long as they make no major changes to the shaders or amount of ROP's in this G92 core, compared to the others, yes, the 8800GTX could definately beat it. The G80 core is still superior, in my mind. Only the memory is faster, really. And the memory doesn't need it. The core does. Nvidia n00bs.

This is making me have second thoughts about buying a 9800GTX. Should I buy one when it comes out or a 8800 GTX and oc the hell out of it?

It's really a hard question to answer right now, as no one really knows, but if you can get your hands a GTX for sub $200 prices and OC it well, I'd go for it. It's a hell of a card.

I'd opt for an 8800GT and overclock it heavily under large air or water. Maybe an 8800GTS 512MB if you can get one for $250 with rebates or if someone is selling one.

A 38W increase in power consumption over the 8800 GTS 512 seems just a tad high. I wonder if they bumped the voltage slightly too, in order to guarantee stability at the higher clocks?

Hmmm, power usage indicates that performance might be slightly higher than currently expected. Here's to hoping.

Very good deal on a used card, or wait until the 9800GTX and 9800GX2 come out, which will force prices down on the 8800GTX.

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

This is a good point. Is there any situation depending on the clocks, where a 7900GTX could beat a 8800GTX?

yeah, so the jump from GF7 --> GF8 was substantial while the jump from GF8 --> GF9 is minimal. (next to nothing actually).

    GF9 = teh suck.

This card will be noticeably faster than the GTS.

Look at the power consumption. It has risen by 40 watts.

You don't get increase like that unless there is more going on with the core.

The 9800GTX will be more than a simple 8800GTS with faster clocks and tri-sli capability.

    Mark my words.

expect 20% or so increase over the GTS.

if they use the same shaders as with the 9600GT it will be a good card
