That is exactly what I did. I went back into the bios and loaded the optimized defaults. Not that I am sad that I have a great overclock all of the time, but that I am worried about installing any more OS's with it overclocked.

when you load optimized bios settings, are you re-setting Intel controller to raid...it defaults to IDE on optimized or default settings.

It seems that is must be a memory issue. I think the idea of a different divider may help. I had all kinds of trouble with the 4/5 divider. Maybe try some of the others. The 1/1, 3/4, and 5/6 all seemed to work well.

Question Does this motherboard OC as well as DFI LanParty UT P35-T2R with quad core CPU's

I have got a really nice CPU overclock happening with my DFI P35 based motherboard. I am at 3825 MHz 12 hr Prime 95 stable on air, but...

I want to go with dual HD3870X2 video cards, and am concerned that having only one PCI-E 16x slot on my P35 based motherboard will limit video performance by quite a bit.

I know the X38 with its dual PCI-E 16x slots and PCI-E 2.0 support will be a better match for the video cards, but I am concerned my CPU performance will diminish if I swap to the X38 series of motherboards. If I won't see an overall performance boost, I won't switch to the X38.

Has anyone noticed any overclocking problems with the X38 based DFI motherboard compared to the DFI P35 based models? Does anyone have direct experience they can relate about these two boards and their relative strengths and weaknesses?

Also, are any of my components going to cause problems if I go with the X38 motherboard?

I have both the p-35 and x-38 right here and I think you would be better off with the x-38 if you want x-fire. with a q6600 you have a 9 multi, and since the x-38 will do 550 fsb and most quads hit their limit at 500 you will not run out of headroom. games that need that extra bandwidth will show nice improvements. and it is a little better with memory in my opinion.

That info was originally given to me by Chris Lee at Theramalright. For a proper fit I had to trim the length of the short side a touch.

    Edit:
Totally forgot about the height issue. There are a double row of caps for the slave chips. The height above board at these caps are a few tenths of a mm higher then the slave chips themselves. Looking at the bottom of the stock heatsink it is easily seen how it has been relief cut to account for the difference in height. Because of this thermal tape/pad has to be used with the HR-09. It needs to be trimmed so that it does not overlap the caps.

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably go ahead and get an X38 based motherboard, but will test with my DFI LanParty UT P35-T2R first. That way we can see how much of a difference the dual 16x slots make.

I like DFI and if I go with an X38 based motherboard, I will probably get the DFI LanParty UT X38-T2R, but I know they are hard to get right now. If I cannot find one of these when the time comes (probably a month or so away), is there any OTHER X38 based motherboard with DDR2 support that would be recommended?

You play around with the GTL settings at all? Pretty critical it seems for getting a decent clock out of a 65nm quad.

If that's the case then you might start playing with em. On auto with CPU voltage @ 1.45v the same overclock i'm running right now failed running OCCT. When i set GTL ref to 115/115 I passed. Each one below 115 failed. After passing OCCT I did a prime95 run for 8 hours no problem.

You just started on 100 and went 1 by 1 testing OCCT till you got it? Like 100/100/100 save>boot>test, then again?

And why some GTL settings are like 115/115/117 with 2 more on the last one?

Looks like some good articles. I read the Anand article about the DFI p35, it had some good stuff, but more info is good. Thanks for posting the link.

You know, I read that article and it did nothing for me. I screwed around with GTL settings until my eyes hurt. I guess this is just my n00bness showing through, but I cant even get stable at 3.6 without 1.46+ volts to the cpu and Vdroop control disabled. What settings are you guys using for voltage on the other chips? VTT? Is having 4 DIMM's really making my overclock that much more unstable?

Can one of you with a 3.8+ Ghz clock post up your bios settings (especially if you have 4 DIMMs)? I am at a loss. Your help is appreciated.

try starting with a 69%gtl for the cpus and 68% for the NB

so for 1.46 start with 101/99

nd lets say do 1.5 for NB with 102
