Just to verify, if I want to run stock speeds, 1:1 ratio with a Q6600 I should be setting 2.00A strap in F7 right? That results in instant instability for me right now. Bizarre Windows boot errors etc... With F3 I have it set to the 2.00 (there are no letters) setting and it's perfectly stable.

It's not just that I'm "looking for trouble" by trying to switch from F3 - what if I want to upgrade my CPU later this year or something? If I can't use the later BIOSes that support the new ones coming out then I'm gonna have to replace the board again...

My system is stable with all version bioses, all 2.0 and 2.4B multipliers. It's just that memory bios settings are not working corectly in any bios version.

Tested F3 bios and I didn't got any improvement. Although 2.5 strap is working in F3, is not better then 2.4.
F3 bios version is missing 2.66 strap.
    Back to F7.

2x 150 GB Raptors on RAID on Vista X64, did anyone noticed any problems ?
BTW whats better to use the Gigabyte SATA 2 Chip [ Even so hdd's are SATA1 but it shouldnt make any difference] or the ICH9R [ Intel Matrix Storage]

I heard a couple of ppl complaining that Vista x64 + Raptor doesnt work and after the 1st Startup it says MBR Unreadable or something like that and ar revoir no system...

    Thanks for response

    It's really nice. Running my Q6600 @ 475x8 now.

Ah, I don't remember if it was told here...but press Ctrl + F1 on bios main screen...you'll see some new things on overclock section. The GTL_ref gives some help here

It has been known for quite some time that pushing CTRL-F1 brings out more options for fine tuning in gigabyte boards.

Almost every review I have come across states so as well..

I remember back in the 8INXP days I had to do same thing to fine tune ram etc..

Dunno why others dun know about this. all the reviewers state so if U cared to read em b4 purchasing the board...

Or just reading any decent Gigabyte board review within the last 2 years will let you know about the CTRL-F1 options..
    Cheers,
    Minh

OMG...is it your first Gigabyte board guys?? Ctrl+F1 has been used like this for many generations. Its kinda like saying "no one said you press delete to get in the bios" It goes without saying...on an enthusiast forum and its clearly stated in the manual.

Edit: yeh Minnyboy, i've seen it mentioned dozens of times on different forums and reviews.

    A small question:

Could you post your FSB and performance level that you can set without loose stability?

    Here I can do 475x8 stable @ PL = 8...I think it's a little high...what do you think?
On my old P5K it was @ 6 at same FSB conditions..

    Someone help...Dinos..

    of course
Quad core PL is always looser than dual core man

plus gigabyte board also depend much on how you setup your RAM timings in bios to get the right PL

try going tight in bios and also use Extreme RAM setting and see how you go

    I'm already using Extreme

Look at my timings and performance:

    40K points @ 423x9, PL = 7, ram @ 1080

can you try 1:1 with really tight timings
i'm talking CAS4 with tight subtimings
[edit]was just looking at my QX9650 testing thread
i was able to bench PL=5 at 400MHz and i've seen some runs there at PL=6 with around 415 or so
i think that PL=8 for 470 seems pretty good

    Thank you Dinos

    And one last question.

Do you know if it's a X38-DQ6 characteristic or it's inherent to all X38 motherboards?

I know this is gigabyte's thread, but I'm between GA-X38-DQ6 and Maximus Formula.

This Q6600 doesn't like asus so much. Refuses to run 1 second Prime95 @ 4000Mhz on P5K and variants and P5E3...

    Now with this mobo:

But I really think the memory performance is a little to weak side in my case...and If the Asus can handle PL 7 or 6 it will be my choice.

PCCriminal told me his P5E WS handle quad core + PL5...so I don't know what to do...I'm in panic heheh

What do you think Dinos? Did you test any Asus X38? (sorry I read this forum all day long but don't remeber somethings, so don't be mad if it's a stupid question )

    i tested P5E3 DLX
    it didn't make much difference
the ing thing died on me after only watercooling bench sessions (~4 sessions maybe)

i put my GB boards through hell and back and they are all kickin ass seriously

i don't think you can run PL5 at such high FSB mate
you need high vMCH and good cooling on NB

    Hey guys,

Is there any official or unofficial changelog for BIOS F8b?

I've read that memory performance seems to be a little better (more stable), but reading that from a single X38-DQ6 owner isn't very corroborative.
