Symptoms:
The computer boots up with a black screen if an ATI Radeon™ HD3870 X2 series is installed into a system with ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard before disabling the Express Gate feature in the CMOS
Solution:
To workaround this compatibility issue, either the feature needs to be disabled in the CMOS setup before installing an ATI Radeon™ HD3870 X2 card or, if this is not an option and only an R680 card is available, the following sequence will allow the user to disable the feature and give full functional capability for the R680.
Workaround with R680 Installed
1) Clearing the CMOS [ this temporarily disables the Express Gate feature ] :
* Remove CMOS battery on the motherboard and wait for 2 minutes before replacing the battery.
* Power the system.
2) Setting up Date and Time:
* When the system boots up the following message will appear at the bottom of the screen: “Please enter Setup to recover BIOS setting” “F1 to run setup”
* Press F1 to enter Setup
* In the Setup / BIOS Setup Utility:
o In the tab labeled “ Main” set the appropriate system date and time.
o Press F1 to obtain general help on how to change the system date and time.
o Move over to the tab labeled “Exit” using the -> (directional left) button
o Go down to the option “load setup defaults”, using the directional down key and press ENTER.
+ A message asking to “Load Setup Defaults” will appear with the OK option highlighted. Press ENTER.
o Press F10 to Save the settings and exit
+ A message asking “Save configuration changes and exit now” will appear with the OK option highlighted. Press ENTER.
o The system will now restart.
3) Disabling Express Gate:
* As the system is beginning to start up again press the DELETE to start the Setup/ BIOS Setup Utility again.
o Using the left/right directional keys move over to the "Tools" tab.
o Using the down directional key, choose “Asus Express Gate [Enabled]”
o Press enter to pull up an option menu. Once in the menu, using the directional keys to choose “Disabled” and press Enter.
o Press F10 and then Enter
4) The system will now restart and boot into your operating system.
