I'm thinking about popping the IHS on my 8400. I want confirmation about one thing before I do it though....
Is the IHS soldered on? I will have to know this in order to determine the best approach. I'm beginning to believe the IHS is not soldered on simply because of the differing temp. ranges on some chips, while others show none of that symptom.
If everything goes bad on a soldered IHS core, this is what it might look like:

A soldered (greased IHS)? Well, check this out...

you guys really have to crank up the volts to get those last few MHz in. i just started working with mine yesterday, so i have a way to go. i'm looking for a daily driver speed - something i won't have to scale back when summer comes. right now i'm at 4.05.

Everest reports 1.27 idle / 1.24 load
CPU-Z does not correctly report Vcore. it always 1.225 no matter what it's at.

Go to File, Preferences, OSD, check OSD, apply. You can add more stuff under OSD Items. Hope this helps.
I just installed my E8500 on a maximus formula, so I opened Everest & coretemp, core 0 and core 1 seems to be fixed at 38c / 67 delta to tjunction at stock speed. Then I upped the vcore up to 1.256v. @ 4005 mhz still both cores 38c/ 67 to tjucntion. Then I run prime small ffts... still 38c/ 67 fixed oO what the hell, I know the temps arent accurate but I never seen so far some1 that his core temps are fixed even under load... Oke however I bumped the volts up to 1.328v and now it idles still both cores 38c/ 67 to tjunctuin, then I open prime.. now it does move to core0: 42 core1: 41 / 63 to tjunction/ 64 to tjunction... this sucks I really dont know how far I can O/c because I have no clue what I temps are..... ( cooling is thermalright 120 extreme w/ push pull config)

i think you're supposed to look at the CPU temp, not the individual core temps. if i read it correctly, i saw somewhere that Intel told us to disregard the individual core temps? 42° load might be accurate with your cooling solution. i have an Asus Silent Square and my 8400 doesn't go over 45° load @ 4.05 GHz, 1.3125 Vcore (1.24 load actual). the people getting high temps with these are overvolting the hell out of them.

mc2k: I know this sounds crazy but if you are using a good air cooler like your Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme then you don't need to worry about temperatures. With that cooler properly installed, even with 1.5 volts, and with whatever MHz you get up to, you're still not going to be close to the thermal throttling point so don't worry about temps. It sounds like your thermal sensors have the stuck at a fixed value bug but at least once your processor starts warming up they seem to be working. If your processor ever catches on fire and blows up at least you'll have a good excuse for Intel to buy you a new one.

Seems like there has been some good overclockers.
1. What would be the general concensus for max vcore with good air cooling (i.e. good HSF, lapped HS etc), 24/7 use? 1.4v? 1.45v? Even 1.5v?
2. Also, because my BIOS reads different to CPU-Z, and on top of that, I have a buttload of vdroop to account for as well, should I be setting this voltage to my BIOS, or to CPU-Z idle or CPU-Z under load?
If I set my BIOS to 1.5v I'm likely to get 1.49v in CPU-Z idle and maybe even down to 1.45-1.46v load.
3. There's been a lot of drama about temps, should I bother keeping an eye on temps at all? Currently under 100% CPU load my hottest core is maxing out at around 65c, according to CoreTemp. Generally I like to keep my CPU's under 70c, but since my thermal paste is still settling in I think it's normal.

Mine is batch Q745A553 packed 12/27/07
Just ran a quick 30 minute OCCT and I must say, not bad!
Tonight I will try it with Orthos or Prime95 and see what happens.
Running 8.5 x 500 (I could never dream of 500 FSB with my Q6600!)
Idle at 43/47 and load at 62/67 (I probably need to re-seat the HS since it was sort of a hack-job)

Hey m8, I am priming now small FFts, almost 9 hours passed @445x9 / 4005mhz 1.280vcore. VID: 1.05, only abit sceptical about my temp sensors....:X because now at load it shows just 38c whereas idle was also 38c and stock with 1.12v showed also only 38c, but like u saw when I pass 1.328v or more, I finally see the temps rising....after it passed 12 hours+ I will move it up tho, will let u know m8

Don't worry too much about the temps man, i'm sure you'll be fine.
Everybody seem to have messed up readings from the core, personally i couldn't care less, as long as it's stable i'm happy.
I think 9 hours is as stable as it's gonna get, a couple of hours is good enough for me, that way i'm sure it won't crash doing the usual stuff.
Like suggested, keep an eye on the cpu temp, not on the core temps.
VID of 1.05V might change with flashing a bios but it sure looks nice.
Good luck pushing it.

Got mine Friday. Am currently at 4GHz. Ordered my Cricial Ballistix PC2-8500 yesterday. I don't think I can go much higher with my OCZ 6400!
Core Temp doesn't go below 37C, but scales logically under load (Prime 95 V25.5) to 50 or 51C on both cores. Matches a read out in Speedfan pretty well. Q743A748, Pack Date 01/04/08. Vid according to Core Temp 1.0875.

well I had to often prime failed on me between 9-12 hours, thus why I do the 12hours mark+. But I will see if I can wait that long lol:X I tried 2 different BIOS, both showed Vid of 1.05 but who knows with a new bios update.

Also, users of the abit IP35 Pro, a new beta bios was just released that seems to work quite well for me. It's version 16B09.
