On my 2900PRO (basically XT) I can bench 1100mhz on air, stock cooler and stock volts no problem. The stock vgpu is 1.2 on my card.

so you run 3d06 with 1100mhz on stock everything? mind showing me a link? strange how nobody i have seen can even get close to that. 955 mhz takes me 1.4v.

LOL, easy there guys I though we were talking about the crappy DDR3 on these cards.

My max gpu clocks on air are 900mhz with 1.25vgpu. No ones pushing 1k+ gpu clocks on air, at least I haven't seen.

How much are these mods needed when you bench the card phase cooled?
If it's mostly useful to defeat the coldbug after -130c, then i won't need it.

well i used 470Uf/6.3v solid caps from a old board
and it worked out graet , cascade on naked gpu's -100°C evap and -81°C core .
had to stop becaus after 3minits i got water all over the place

I also did the "Hipro capacitor" mod for my 2900PRO.
I just did the full transformation (before it was 100% stock) so the overclock fun just has to come (but I won't go to crazy this time because its my main card). Before (@stock fan100%) it did 850MHz core now it does 890MHz with stock bios 1.15v. I still have to test with my edited biosses but with stock cooling i did ran some benchmarks with 900MHz 1,25v (quick runs, card runs hot as hell).
My target is 1GHz core. Ok enough talking here are my pics:
I used 8 330uF 16v low ESR's, works like a charm...

I realy like my temps @ watercooling, 31 degrees is miles better than the crazy loud stock aircooling

So you got an OC increase?

Try to shorten the legs of the caps, i think they will higher the ESR dramatically.

Do you have a datasheet of the caps? What ESR they're rated at?

No, the watercooling and the better VRM cooling did raise the maximum overclock. The capacitor mod didn't (alltough not with stock 1,15v, only thing I tested).
I don't ESR rating of those capacitors, I just let them ordered at a local specialized electronic shop. The man form the shop ordered them form a wholesaler in the UK it took quite some time searching for 8 capacitors with the right value that were in stock in the wholesaler.

Can someone confirm that long legs of a capacitor causing a significant higher ESR?


My overclock results:
1,20v > 910MHz
1,25v > 940MHz
1,30v > 970MHz
1,35v > 985MHz

What's a safe 24/7 voltage for my card?
I have to do more testing but I was thinking of a 1,3v bios @ 950MHz.

I used to only bench CPUs before, but after testing my own 2900pro and reading this thread I really need to start fooling around with some GPUs as well

btw, my card (2900pro) does 865/1200 3dmark03 stable / stock air / 1.15v -2.2v (stock). 1200 mem is sweet, but not sure about the gpu. No point in looking for another 2900pro (for xfire) if this one hasn't got any REAL potential.

I forgot to add that the above fps was done with the ASUS Blitz Extreme and 2 x 8 PCI-E.....ADD now another ~2 - 3 fps more on P5E3 WS Pro 2 x 16 PCI-E and calculate.....
