    Hey guys,

Well, my QX9650 arrived and ive had a couple of days playing around with it. However, im really struggling tbh, and wanted your thoughts.

Firstly, I dont think its the chip. I recon the chip will easily do what im attempting. At stock settings I got it into windows @ 4ghz -

This was only about 1hr prime stable however, so I set about stablising it. The problem is, I keep getting completely random results. For example, after getting a bit frustrated with it not working, I decided to clock back to 3.7ghz and work my way up, to get a feel for how the chip behaved. Often its easier to do it in small steps rather than one big jump.

    I managed 10hrs prime stable @ 3.9ghz -

I recon the voltage could be lower for this overclock, but the board has been frustrating me so i havnt been able to fine tune anything. Whatever settings I set (with the exception of stock), it will randomly freeze on the windows loading screen.

Once it does this once, it wont load windows at ANY setting unless I switch off, clear CMOS, boot into windows at stock, then reboot and load my overclocked settings. At which point it will go straight back into windows again... and even run prime for a bit. Then for example, if one core fail's, i shut down windows, go into bios, adjust a voltage for example... and bam... windows wont load again. So I have to go through the whole process almost everytime I want to change a bios setting. This makes it very difficult.

Im running 1224 official bios atm. Previously my Q6600 has run fantastically on this board, and the board was rock solid. Im thinking it might be early penrhyn bios syndrome, but hoping u guys can give me a few pointers if im missing something.

Talking Switching ram has really helped with FSB speeds

I got new Corsair Dominator PC-10000 ram last week, and after some initial tweaking, I am running at 3257 MHz (465.4 MHz x 7 multiplier). As mentioed previously, I am a bit new to memory timing settings, so have posted my PC settings here in the hope someone can point out ways to improve things a bit.

Note: I am currently using the 333/800 strap in BIOS, so memory is currently running at 558.5 MHz with the following settings (as taken from MemSet 3.5 Beta and BIOS):

    CAS# Latency (tCL)=5
    RAS# to CAS# Read Delay=5
    RAS# to CAS# Write delay=5
    RAS# Precharge (tRP)= 5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)=18
    All Precharge to Active=4
Refresh Cycle Time (tRFC)=63 (BIOS says 66)
    Performance Level=7
    Write to Precharge Delay=12
    Write to Read Delay (tWTR)=10
    Active to Active Delay (tRRD)=3
    Read to Write Delay (tRDWR)=8
    Read to Precharge Delay (tRTP)=3
    All Precharge to Refresh Delay=4
    Refresh Period (tREF)=3120T
    Command Rate=2T

Enhance Data Transmitting, and Enhance Addressing are both at Fast

    T2 Dispatch is Disabled

Channel 1/2/Common Clock Cross Settings are all More Aggressive

TRD Phase Adjust is enabled for all chs except Ch 2 Phase 1 Pull In (as show in Anandtech review), so Performance level is essentially at 6.

    GTL is 114-115-117
    vDIMM is 2.370
    vCore is 1.4125
    NB Core Voltage is 1.65
    CPU VTT is 1.60
    Vcore Droop Control is Disabled

Core Temp is showing maximum temperatures of 66 C, and all cores are within 4 C of each other, and Smart Guardian shows PWM temp of 51 C and Chipset temp of 43 C. I am using a 10" fan to blow cool air on case, otherwise the PWM and Chipset temps would be appx 10-12 C higher.

I had to go to side fan as the top of the case is cut, dual 12 cm fans and Swiftech MR220 radiator assembly has been trial fitted, and brackets for permanently mounting assembly are being made In the meantime, the dual 12 cm fans will no longer mount properly to the case top.

I am currently in my 4th hour of prime 95 on all cores with no errors, so things look good at this point (note that it was at this point where I added the side fan, so system so far has been stable without "help".

I will let it run until I have 8 hrs Prime 95 stable, and then I will post a screen shot.

I want to maximize FSB speed/memory timings so I am ready for when my new E8500 processor arrives. My question is what to tweak next?

Thanks for sharing your temps. Just reaffirms that i need better case air flow to get my temps lower.

I only use LAN port 1 here on Vista X64 without issue. I have Lan port 2 disabled in the bios as it will never use it. The in box drivers that Vista installed with worked with the port as well as the latest that Windows Update installed.

Try both ports and disable on or the other and see if that helps. Perhaps a visit to Marvell's site to obtain a new driver may be in order.

Hey, have any of you guys tried the 1/09/08 Beta for the P35? If so what is the consensus on this Beta release is it any good and also is it stable?

Please let me know from those of you that have tried it as I would appreciate some feed back from those of you that have so I can know how safe it is to program for peoples Bios chips.

BTW......I have "3" Bios Chips remaining for the P35 if anyone is interested before they are gone.

yeah it was pretty stable for me but unfortunatley still didnt help me get any decent clocks out of this ES QX9650. it corrects the VTT tables so is definitely useful for Yorkfield, well retail anyways.

Well as nobody has commented I reckon its only fair I throw my 2 cents worth in 4 U.

I would say your CPU clock & 465fsb is pretty good with the B3 Q6600 is 3.2GHz its max or are you already pumping all the voltage you want to give it?

Your vcore looks a little high for 3.2GHz but I guess you need what you need with the B3 right?

Your memory clock @ 1100mhz ish ain't bad either but with those posh sticks I would have imagined they could do better. Your vdimm is too high, most all my D9 based ram can do 1100 between 2~2.1v ish.

Your timings are not far out either, some are already quite tight.

tras @ 18, you could gain a little memory bandwidth & speed up PI 32M if you played around & tightened this up probably between 9 & 14 ish.

trfc @ 63~66 is hurting your bandwidth, you should be able to run 25~35 ish imo.

Your temps are ok but your CPU is a little high for my personal liking, I would check your cooling & airflow, my Q6600 only just hits 70 @ 3.8GHz + & 1.5v + but then again its a G0.

It worked ok for me too with an E8400 but the GTL+ Buffer & slew rate were all garbled.

1224 works fine with wolfdale imo so I seen no need to carry on using a BETA with faults when the official run perfectly.

    Wolfdale Temps

Anyone with Wolfdale noticed your CoreTemp posting weird/inaccurate temps?

I'm using CoreTemp 0.96.1 & noticed that my temps aren't moving, when i compared it to SG, it's way way off...could this be a bios thing? (01/09 Bios)

My temp difference is the same as yours between Core temp & Smart guardian, you can almost correct this by adding +15 in the health monitor part of BIOS.

My temps are moving from the 40oC ish idle but I don't trust them, @ 4GHz 1.4v core temp reads 60 under load but @ 4.2GHz 1.5v I am only seeing 62oC with a 20oC ambient.

No doubt the core temp vs Smart guardian difference is a BIOS thing or can be compensated for with a BIOS update I remember the same thing happening on my 680i.

I got the tRFC info off the EEP info in memory section of CPU-z, and have now set the tRFC at 36. tRAS is now set to 15. I don't want to tighten things any further until I can get my GTL settings right.

    Question GTL setting question

Does anyone know which GTL Ref Voltage corresponds to the Prime 95 worker threads? Essential I am looking for information so I know which CPU GTL Ref Volt (1/3, 0/2) to adjust when any given core fails in Prime 95.

Also, when do you play with NB GTL Ref Voltages (before/after CPU GTL stable)? Or do you just set according to table and leave alone?

GTL 1/3 corresponds to the first two threads of Prime95. GTL 0/2 matches up with threads 3 and 4. If either thread for one core consistently fails adjust the CPU GTL for that core. If the failures are random between cores adjust NB GTL. You need to use Prime95 v25.6d.

What bios are you people with these new 45nm chips using?

Installed my chip with 24/12 on and it worked ok. Booted up went int bios and changed my hdd settings and a few other things, didnt change any cpu or ram settings. Saved and restarted and nothing, error codes all to crap. Was just stuck on a 1 second boot then stop loop. Reset bbios with jumpers same thing, took battery out and left it a while put it back in, no difference.
So i put an old P4 chip in to make sure the board was ok and it booted fine.Flashed bios to latest beta 1/09 and put E8400 back in and same crap happens.
Had battery out for 2 hours earlier still not going right but managed to get working after pressing the ezclear switches for a bit. Dont wanna restart now in case it dont work again.

    I know Sepander's on 11/07, and mrcape's on 1/09. I'll probably flash to 1/09 myself though, but we'll see.

Hmm I think some people like C-N and maybe Turtle Trax have used 12/24 without problems.

01/09 worked great for me, but all I can tell you is how I prepared for the e8400 -

I was running 12/24 with an e6600. With the old e6600 in the board, I set everything to default, saved and rebooted into windows. Then I shut down and started back up and flashed to 01/09 using winflash which was sketchy, the active window went half white, but I waited and it finished fine. Then I shut down and replaced the e6600 with the e8400.

It was easy breezy since then. Bios has been solid as a rock. Cleared cmos only a couple times out of hundreds of bios edits. Board has recovered like a champ every time with no battery removal or jumper move at all.

My issue seems to usually be with the 1st thread of Prime 95. At the same time, about 1/3 of the time it is random. I will focus on adjusting GTL 1/3 first, and see if problems disappear (or at least become more random). After that, I will work on NB GTL if still having issues.

Question Could I get people to post their OC settings/GTL settings

If I can get people to post their overclock settings and GTL settings, I will take the time to make a chart and post the results. I know that the GTL settings and voltages vary, and that there is no "one" magic setting, but I think it would be helpful for newcomers to see what other people are using.

If willing, please post your processor type, overclock achieved including multiplier and FSB, and GTL settings. As GTL is tied to voltages, please also note CPU VTT and NB core voltages.

Note: I would looking for STABLE settings, don't list what worked for only an hour or two.

Praz has suggested the following: If you are going to do this might also want to list BIOS version as VTT/GTL tables are slightly different between a couple of versions. Might also want to list stability something like this. Prime95,Blend/2hrs or Orthos, sFFT/4hrs.

Why don't we add Prime 95 Blend for 4 hours as a requirement using Prime 95.6, which was linked on last page. That way we will get settings that are at least close for others to try.

I will compile a list of results in 1 week to give everyone time to verify their results are stable.

I've got the same problem with my E8400 when using 12/24 or 01/09.

    11/07 works like a champ.
