i thought they can both do crossfire.. one just has 2 16x lanes and one has a 16x and a 4x lane. correct?? i know the x38 will be better for crossfire in the long run though..

praz do they both oc the same orhave you found the x38 to oc farther/more stable then the p35 version? thanks

If I was buying a board with the possibility of CrossFire at some point in time I wouldn't be limiting myself to x4 on one of the slots when x16 was an existing option.

The two are pretty even as far as overclocking potential. If I had to give the edge to one it would be the P35 as it seems slightly better with the memory side of things. The X38 was developed for DDR3 so naturally there was some compromising that needed to be made with DDR2 performance. The plus side of the X38 is the straps. There's very little performance difference between strap changes. I tend to look at the different settings as just memory dividers.

Hey that was helpful as I have both Asus P5E x38 and DFI p35 here to use for the e8400 that just arrived. I'm going straight into the DFI P35 with this chip because I love this DFI board. Do you think it's worth testing both, or that the P35 will perform the same as x38 with 45nm other than the straps?

LOL. Anything from me would be nothing more then guessing. I got left out in the cold with these new processors. So don't have a clue. But I will have one tomorrow and I'll be running it in both boards right away.

From what I've read it looks like X38 do quite well with them. With that said however its gone both ways (YMMV)! Like Praz I'm also going to test in DFI P35 and Asus MaxExt, hopefully sooner than later to! Its taking me a long time to get started (the darn E8400 is still in the box, unopened for goodness sake)! Looking forward to your results Praz and I'm sure you'll be up and running well before me!

If anyone can tell me how to keep this damn chipset cool i'd appreciate it. I bought a thermaltake extreme spirit II and the damn thing still gets up to 50C under load. I don't want to use water. If anybody has any ideas let me know.

1 x 80mm up front. 1x 80mm on the side blowing in right over the video card and chipset. 1x 120mm out back exhaust and then the PSU intake/exhaust fans. Not sure how i would make the air flow better then it already is barring getting another case with larger case fans. Appreciate your response though.

Depending on what fans you have, replacing them could help. Is the air that is blowing on the chips near a wall or anything? Blowing heated air on a cooler defeats the point of it. You could see if you put too much TIM on the chipset. Not sure, most stock P35 chipsets with stock HS's on them hover around 41c. What voltage are you running the chipset at?

Well.... No wall. The ambient temp is about 21C.

Running 1.45v through the chipset. Applied arctic ceramique when changing out the NB cooler. Before i got this cooler i had dremelled the 'T' portion off the NB and mounted a fairly high powered 40mm fan that came from a rackmount server case. I had to rotate my TRUE as a result of the height. With that i was loading @ 52C. Now i've only netted 2C less the only high point is that it allows for clearance so i could mount the TRUE with exhaust going out back.

I've only had the board for a week so i still have more tweaking to do over the weekend. The dremmel and fan thing worked so well with my P965-S i was hoping for the same results.

something wrong there. My chipset with active cooling and 1.61volts across it stays below 50. My ambients are around 28-29 degrees.

maybe check the heatsink contact with the chipset? i mean make sure it is flat and not concave or sunk in.. have you removed it to see how the compound is making contact?

So I got the e8400 up to 4.5ghz @1.44v and that was easy with manual gtl settings at 61 60 61. Gotta do some work with the other voltage settings to see if that vcore can come down at all. Or just up the clock I guess.

Is it true that 1.45v should be the max?
