Thanks Ace for the info and great help. I'll try it out and let you know. Btw, is it normal for the 2 sticks of RAM to feel hot on this board even at 2-2.2V?

ram does have different heat dissipation characteristics...if you are at stock speed, you shouldn't need more than 1.9 for Vdimm...you can always mount a couple of small fans over the memory sticks....if they feel hot to the touch then by all means add some fans or buy a memory cooler.

hey everyone...a new version of CPU-Z is out, 1.43....it appears that the freezing action is fixed when you have Uguru opened on the Desktop...i've have both open up for about 5 minutes and so far, no lockups.

    Ace,

I wanted your thoughts on this. I haven't done the heat pipe mod yet, but my PWM temps are always in the low 40's even when I'm running at 3.6 Ghz. I'm running a dual core, not a quad, not sure if that would explain my low temps...

Is the IP35 going to support the new 45nm chips?

Abit's site don't show it in the supported list, but it is in the supported list for the X38 board...

Hope I don't have to buy an X38 board to run these...

Beta 16.b04 supports the QX9650 quite well.

The 45nm chips are the 'Penryn' refresh, correct?
If so, then yes, they should be supported. As ncsa mentioned, it's probably a good idea to grab the latest BIOS though...

They aren't officially supported yet on the IX38 either
    http://www.abit.com.tw/cpu-support-l...x38-quadgt.htm

However, it's expected that both the IX38 & the IP35 series will do so once they are released (in a few days iirc) - abit usually don't have official support ahead of release due to NDAs.

Ok QX9650 straight in at 445x9 4GHZ 1.35v measured via DMM. Volt mod on board, no droop, in fact rises 0.01v priming away small ffts. Load temps around 54,47,52,52C water fresh Shin-Etsu, ambient around 25C. Hell of a lot less load on the PWM than the Q6600.

One question one of the cores is way cooler than the others 5-7C cooler, anyone seen this? I'm used to seeing a pair different, but not just one.

just got my SLACR Maylay in. Its going to go straight to a single stage. Whats the safe limit on voltage? i was thinking of just trying for 430 @ 1.3 and working from that. any suggestions or should i walk it up like i would on water?

When I updated to the Beta 16's I noticed the same with the core temp. I flashed back to the official version 14 then it went back to all being within 1-2c of each other.

Is it possible that the cores are stressed differently with the Beta 's?

    Question Which HS to use?

I am building a new rig, and I plan on using this board w/ a Q6600 which I plan to OC to only 3.0ghz using air.
Initially I was going to go with the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme HS, but after reading Anandtech's review on this board I think I am going to use a CM GeminII HS w/ 2 fan's because of this quote from Anandtech:
based upon our initial overclocking tests, if a vertical mounted fan in an air cooling unit such as the Tuniq 120 or water-cooling is utilized then additional air cooling will be required on the MCH and PWM areas. In other words, the heat pipe system works best with a downward blowing CPU HSF fan in mind.
Based upon this I would be better off with the GeminII and 2 down facing fans vs. the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme... correct?
    Any/All feedback appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback, and just so I am 100% on this, for Ace's heatpipe mod all you have to do is replace the plugs holding down the stock heatpipe with a few screws and nuts?
I was unclear on whether or not I need to apply new TC (thermal compound) or a TP (thermal pad)? If so, what/where/how?

I peeled the thermal pads off and used some new thermal compound. I have the original pads just in case the board needs to be returned.

The Northbridge (middle heatsink) has an outer pad that is white. It keep's the heatsink straight so you should leave that on, just apply compound to the center.

The Mosfets I would make sure you use a non-capacitive compound like Ceramique.

You should try and keep a fan blowing on the Mosfet heatsink or perhaps mount one on it if you are using a Quad Core CPU, it gets pretty hot even after the mod.

If you look for Ace-a-Rue's post further up the page there is a link to his mod with instructions, it's in his signature.

Trying to push my Q6600 a bit further, I'm stable at 3.6GHz 9x400 but finding it a bit hard once I get up to 9x420.

    Stable settings: -

    3600Hz 9x400FSB - vCore=1.4475v - MCH=1.37v - CPU VTT=1.31v - ICH=1.05v - DDR2=2.1v - ICHIO=1.55v

    3690Hz 9x410FSB - vCore=1.4675v - MCH=1.44v - CPU VTT=1.31v - ICH=1.05v - DDR2=2.1v - ICHIO=1.60v

    Almost stable: -

    3780Hz 9x420FSB - vCore=1.5275v - MCH=1.52v - CPU VTT=1.31v - ICH=1.05v - DDR2=2.2v - ICHIO=1.65v

I have 4x1GB Corsair 8500C5 Dominators running @504MHz I can't seem to get them to run over 533MHz at all. Even with the loosest of timings they just won't go over 533. The good news is that they don't seem to interfere with the CPU overclock, the same settings work with 2x1GB as 4x1GB.

The vdroop is very bad @1.5575v in uguru it's drooping down to a reported 1.43v at load and 1.49v idle. When my new case finally arrives I'll do the droop mod while I have the motherboard out.

Hmmmm, same here with my Q6600 G0 - one core is 5-6C cooler than the others. BIOS is 16b04...
It's weird, mine has up to 11c difference depending on load. I've tried re-seating the CPU block a couple of times. It looks as though the primary core is always working a little harder and hotter, I guess it makes sense with most apps only using the primary core.

I might lap the CPU when I switch cases and try another re-seat.

I wanted your thoughts on this. I haven't done the heat pipe mod yet, but my PWM temps are always in the low 40's even when I'm running at 3.6 Ghz. I'm running a dual core, not a quad, not sure if that would explain my low temps...
if your PWM is that low, i would leave the way it is...obviously 2 cores is less strain on the PWM circuit.
