Hi

You finally made it, 4.2gig my respect . Pls run 3dmark06 and post your result. I found out that this cheap mobo can easily stand up to the very expensive mobos out there.
Donīt forget to cool your NB and SB chips, with an active cooler. While gaming my rig used to crash due to heat issues, as at these crashes the NB was only cooled with wc. Included the SB chip in my loop and damn. Itīs became perfectly stable. We have almost the same config in bios Veil spars mit dein neu rig. Pls donīt forget to bench and have fun with the new rig.

Good score what vga card are you using; sli config or single? Actually i used the stock cooler from my DFI inifinity NF4-SLI on the SB for awhile before getting Alphacool NexXxoS NBXS-A Silver (NB/SB) in my loop. I presume any active cooler with 53~55mm between the locks will do the trick.
I canīt garantie this cooler, XILENCE Chipsatz but it has a 55mm and gap between the retention holes. Here is a link to an ebay site.

Wow, it's great to see that the new dual cores work with this board. I'm going to pick one a new CPU

Not sure if to get an e8400 or e8500 though.

well I had mine in but it wasn't stable even at stock settings.

How did you get it stable?

I'm using the same bios and same settings overall.

Except I have ram and cpu unlinked, not linked, but that is all. I purposely put my ram to 5-5-5-15 2T for compatibility, but no go.

I guess I'll give it another shot if you've got yours stable. I was able to boot into windows with higher settings than you with lower voltage, but it wasn't stable.

I wonder what's going on?

I exchanged emails with an editor at Anandtech and he said next week he's going to update the article about Wolfdales and motherboard compatibility and he's going to contact Asus to see if he can get us an ETA on bios for 650i sli boards, well our P5N-E SLI to be more specific.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi all, I didn't want to make a new thread. So I figured best to post here first.

I Just upgraded my Bios with a Bootable CDRom using FlashBios to 0803.
The bios is pretty unstable... I got a bios checksum error from trying past 1818fsb.

I could get the board to boot to Windows loading screen @ 1818fsb with my E6300 @ 1.4vcore (3.18ghz) which I've ran it for over a year now. Once it reached the loading screen BAM BSOD. Or self restart, or both...

I'm kind of worried about upgrading to the E8400 now if the board is hitting a wall with this new bios past 450fsb while trying to get into Windows.

Should I be worried, or purchase away my E8400 ? I don't want to be disappointed or run into stability issues, which I have now prior to buying the cpu.

Power Supply - Silverstone 750W
CPU - E8400 @ 3.6ghz (stock voltage and climbing)
Mobo - DFI LP X38-TR2
Video - PNY 8800 GTX
Ram - Crucial Ballistix PC6400 2gig kit D9's 4-4-4-12 -2T
HSF - Tuniq Tower 120

The 0803 bios sucks. I had the same problem when i upgraded my board´s bios with the 0803. I had the same bsod when ever i try to boot into windows and i couldn´t overclock at all. So i had to flash back the 0603-4bios. Well every board reacts differently and i will advice you to use the 060..bios and go ahead with buying your E8400.
What vga card are you using?

8800 GTX. I have it over a year now <3 the card.

0608 doesn't support 45nm though :| I read. Only 0803 starts supporting it.

Why donīt you reflash your 0202 bios, then wait untill you get your E8400 before flashing 0803.
Meanwhile thats is the only option for now. What is your 3dmark06 score with this board.

P.S. I ordered the X38 DFI board. Considering this P5N-E SLi is my 3rd one, before I have to go out and buy a 4th. I've never replaced this many boards for 1 rig within a year... Ever...

Next time you run the 3dmark06 pls try out these settings in cmos and post your result here. I want to find out if this was the cause for my 15k. I equally know that the vga card plays it´s part but.....

Sytem clock-NB PCIE Frequency 131
NB core voltage 1.563v

Chipset
LDT Frequency {6X}

Can you try these out and give me your fit backs.

Sure, i'll try it out and get back to you. I had to downclock though to 3.1ghz @ 1.31vcore (lil below stock vcore). and it's prime stable for 6hrs. lol, versus 3.2ghz for 1.45vcore.

Am running my quad B3 at 3.0ghz for now with 1.31v, but needs 1.45 for a 3.2ghz oc. Funny enough i was able to bench at 3.3ghz and after this day,
i couldnīt get my rig to reach 3.3ghz again.

i will say this because i know first hand.

stop using the P5N-E SLI for quads and newer CPU's.

for quads its horrible. the fsb caps out at around 350mhz. and you will end up using WAY more volts than is needed.

Shocker according to your sig you are running 3.2ghz and using 1.45v

i can guarentee that if you got a different board that chip would do the same 3.2ghz on around 1.35-ish volts or less. and yes even on a B3.

the p5ne-sli is a fantastic single and dual core board, but its not to be used for overclocking quads and newer cpu's because it takes much more volts to get the cpu there.

to the OP your at 4.2ghz @ 1.5+ v again i can guarentee that you throw that on another baord and you's see 4.5ghz @ 1.5-ish volts. or even higher mhz. that board just isnt that good for that cpu.

i LOVED my P5N-E SLI. and you will find me STILL saying around the forum that the P5N-E SLI had the best memory overclocking out of any board i have ever owned. but it sucks for everything but a Core2Duo.

[QUOTE=Lestat;2782079]i will say this because i know first hand.

stop using the P5N-E SLI for quads and newer CPU's.

for quads its horrible. the fsb caps out at around 350mhz. and you will end up using WAY more volts than is needed.

Shocker according to your sig you are running 3.2ghz and using 1.45v

i can guarentee that if you got a different board that chip would do the same 3.2ghz on around 1.35-ish volts or less. and yes even on a B3.

Meanwhile i heard that most B3s can´t get over 3.2ghz, moreover most guys out there with a B3 running at 3.4ghz or higher, has lady luck on their side. They equally run them with very high volt(1.6~1.7v), which i ain´t ready to do. I ain´t a hardcore gamer and bench maybe once in a blue moon, so for now am running mine at 3ghz with 1.3v(stock voltage) cos my aim is stability 247. I don´t want to change this board until the 45nm Quads are fully in the retail shops, then i will search for a replacement. All the same thanks for dropping your views. I will be testing a Go stepping on this board and i will equally post it´s highest fsb when am thur ...

NB:
I ran 3dmark06 with 367mhz fsb so your 350mhz can´t be true, it´ain´t much but i got a 15713 with it. you can click on my 3dmark link for proof.

Hey all, new to these forums, just thought I'd post my overclock results:

E8400 / P5N-E (bios 0803) @ 4207 MHz
Ai Tuning: Manual
Sli Ready Memory: Disabled
Vcore Voltage: 1.45000V
Memory Voltage: Auto
Vcore offset Voltage: +100mv
FSB memory clocked mode: Unlinked
FSB memory ratio: Unsynced
FSB (QDR), MHz: 1870
NB PCI-E Frequency MHz: 101

System specs:
Intel E8400 Wolfdale @ 4.2GHz
Asus P5N-E SLI nForce 650i
2x 2GB Mushkin EM2-6400 DDR2-800
1x eVGA GeForce 8800GTS G80 (320/320)
Ultra X2 750w Modular PSU
Antec Nine Hundred case
Fans: 1x 120mm CPU / 5x 120mm intake / 1x 200mm exhaust
Thermalright IFX-14 CPU Cooler (without backside attachment)
Thermalright HR-03 Plus GPU Cooler
OS: Vista 64-bit

The "budget" DDR2 modules I bought wont overclock worth a damn, so I had to OC the CPU in unlinked mode and keep the RAM at stock 800MHz.

3DMark06 (1280x1024 / AA off): 11452

Core temp peaked at 72C during 4 hours of various benchmarks and playtesting, GPU peaked at 62C while the ambient temp inside the case remained at 34C consistent. These temps are pretty good for an air-cooled system with as 1200MHz OC, but I think even with my single video card I should be getting a higher 3DMark06 score.

Indeed you should be although I hear the 320mb versions of the 8800gts
weren't that grt,
these are my scores using a bfg9600GT OC (factory)

the p5ne-sli is a fantastic single and dual core board, but its not to be used for overclocking quads and newer cpu's because it takes much more volts to get the cpu there.

to the OP your at 4.2ghz @ 1.5+ v again i can guarentee that you throw that on another baord and you's see 4.5ghz @ 1.5-ish volts. or even higher mhz. that board just isnt that good for that cpu.

i LOVED my P5N-E SLI. and you will find me STILL saying around the forum that the P5N-E SLI had the best memory overclocking out of any board i have ever owned. but it sucks for everything but a Core2Duo.
+1 i changed to DFI and found out that you were right. But in as much as the DFI DL LT P35 T2RS can oc my quad with less voltage + rock stable, the P5n-E can tune the rams better for better benching results.
I have to take back my words on voltages for ocing a B3
